I was wondering why honest was no longer limited/banned
@@arandominternetuser4507 I want to know why other light decks don't run it. The effect is very good and it doesn't have a lot of counters since it targets your own monster while not being a target for MST.
@@Nerobyrne i dont necessarily play a ton of modern yugioh but my guess would be that the reason is:
-not a ton of light-centric meta decks at the time
-the ones that are have their own, better Honest
-the ones that dont have that dont particularly need it and are running a more relevant card for their archetype in its place
Again I don't know for sure, but I'm fairly certain that's why. If you have a light centric deck and wanna run honest, go for it! Notice that lots of the cards on this list got updated. The meta is influenced by actual players trying things to see if they work.
@@yilvoxe4017 oh yeah, just because it's not played in the current meta isn't going to stop me from trying out strategies I think will work.
Although with some things, I am realizing why they aren't played anymore. For instance Gravekeepers.
I LOVE the archetype, but I do see how other more modern archetypes are way better, objectively.
What if they are keeping all the best card combos for themselves though to counter all people who adjust deck accordingly???
Ah, Gorz, the reason older players still attack directly in ascending attack power order.
Took my lesson too late. Lol
Damn that's so accurate, I still do this shit 🤣
And they dont attack with the strongest monster lol
이거다 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ
I still do this in duel links even though we’ve never gotten gorz lol. Some habits never die. We just got tregodia though, so ascending order attacking is meta again.
The artwork for pre-preparation of rites is so freaking cute. Look at how much food that little monster got! I hope those cultists aren't planning anything nefarious and are just happy that their little buddy gets a good meal.
"Hah hah hah, yes! YES!"
"Why are you laughing evilly, fellow cultist?"
"Because I KNEW the little mask monster would like my spaghetti more than Cultist Joe's hamburgers!"
"Ah, yes, your wicked spaghetti strategy was undeniable."
"Look at the smile on its little face! LOOK AT IT, I SAY, AND DESPAIR!"
looks lke no-face from chihiros journey
I'm envious.
Also, 3 copies = 3 courses. Nirvana.
What if the little monster is actually the monster used as tribute 😮
So, basically, a trap saying „you win the game“ isn’t played - because you have to wait 1 turn and it’s not immune to being negated. Insane.
If preparation of rite is released in Duel Links, tier 0
Yeap it will break the entire meta

Fusion summon era? When was that?
You seem to refer to a time before Synchros but weren't there only few decks relying on Fusion monsters back then (because most of the old Fusion monsters weren't worth the effort)?
@@xCorvus7x "weren't there only few decks relying on Fusion monsters back then"
What would you call this era then, Orbital 7?
@@shadotarot I don't know it well enough to propose an alternative (do you think the time before Synchros is too long to be just called „the early days“?) but it seems weird to name the period after something that doesn't really characterise it.
Who actually Fusion summoned back then?
When Synchros and Exceeds were introduced, speaking of Synchro and Exceed era respectively made sense because those did see wide-spread play shortly after being introduced.
Fusion summoning, however, was for the longest time too cumbersome to be competitively viable (aside from Instant Fusion).
Besides, aren't Rituals around for as long as Fusions?
Idk, I'm not per se against defining these terms according to Extra deck mechanics.
Maybe I was just thrown off by you speaking of a „Fusion _summon_ era“ instead of a „Fusion era“.
I really appreciate that you talk about the dates, card history and the bigger picture element of yugioh.
You forgot quaking mirror force. That card was also pretty good for stalling, before link monsters completely shredded it lol
Ikr its a really good combo for my Chaos Ancient Gear Giant which my opponent would carelessly summon anything and attack leaving the monsters open for my attack
still, face-down monsters cannot be used as link material and your opponent can only remove them by tribute summoning these face down monsters (wich is rare because a lot of meta deck are made out of lv4 or lower monsters or lv5 or higher monsters that can't be normal summoned/set) so if you manage to make one of your opponent monster in the extra monster zone face-down your opponent can't use his extra deck.
I mean it's still pretty good to be fair
Yaghi Ziad You can still use face down monsters for fusion summons. Unfortunately
@@kushinkurushimi8471 fusion summons are even more rare than tribute summons. At least most meta decks are have SOME high level monsters that can summon themselves but also be normal summoned like Cyber Dragon, Pankratops, Eldlitch or Simorg (in my case that would be Rainbow Dragon, the Zenith Crystal Beast). Fusions only show up on decks specifically designed for them, and from those only Shaddoll is outright good and the only other decent ones are Thunder Dragon, ABC and Ancient Gears.
22:12 Ash Blossom doesn’t trigger Witch’s Strike; it only negates the effect, not the activation.
True, I made a mistake there. Should have showed Ghost Belle instead
It does trigger witch strike. I literally have an error replay (no idea how it happened to some of them) of me doing it in tag. I was surprised when it happened. Since ash can negate *special summon from the deck* you will be able to copy strike them.

Fun fact, people also dont use fiendish chain because if you can chain an effect that banishes or destroy the targeted monster and then bring him back (i.e. stardust dragon own effect) fiendish chain stays on the field doing absolutely nothing

Honest has saved my cyber dragon deck so many times
The problem with Honest imo is the brickiness of it in a modern play environment. Back in 2013 when more attacking took place, Honest was an auto-include in LIGHt-focused decks. Now, it's taking up space of a potential extender.
Pre Preparation of Rites is one of the most valuable cards in my Relinquished deck. And there are other decent targets. Garlandolf the King of Destruction, Demise King of Armageddon for a couple examples.
I tested Pre-Preperation of Rites with Fortress Whale in my Neo-Daedalus with Mermail/Atlanteans Deck and the instant level 7 water grab was great for Mermail XYZ combos.

I remember once a long time ago I beat a chain burn player in tournament with gorz's burn effect. The good old days
Supply Squad:" Needs good deck to play it"
Machina: "hey"
The other thing I noticed with grand mole is that it’s useful to get around “cannot be targeted or destroyed by card effects” protection. But I’ve noticed that this kind of protection is being replaced with the better protection of “unaffected by card effects.” Grand mole is useless against that kind of protection.
Unaffected by card effects as protection isn't really that common.
Everything is useless against that kind of protection
@@joeyhoward-williams8853 nah. You can use Kaiju on those.
@@chipan9191 ah yeah, but come on kaijus dont count ,they can out anything except for like 4 cards in the game that cant be tributed, unaffected is still supreme... but yeah great point
@@joeyhoward-williams8853 given that the unaffected protection is the highest protection currently available, it seems obvious that if something can overcome that protection it can also overcome any other protection. But there are a few other examples that can overcome it. Super-poly is one example, although it’s limited in terms of what can be considered material and it’s currently banned. Towers effect can work to dispatch one assuming the opponent doesn’t have other monsters to throw instead. And lastly you have the classic “destroy by battle” and whatever effects can assist in that like honest. The point I’m making is that the protection is very good and there are very few outs to it, but there are still some outs.
I'm surprised Starlight Road isn't on this list.
Playing legacy of the duelist and Starlight Road is the fucking best card. Almost a mandatory 3 of when every AI draws Raigeki and so few monsters have good floating or protection.
Starlight road was like the champions comeback of cards. I miss that
@@tking2199 It was good but it's too specific for negation now even if you essentially get 2 of them for the price of 1 (Stardust Dragon doesn't come back after it's negated something if Summoned with Starlight Road since it isn't Synchro Summoned).
Honest and Trickstar are funny, cause a Trickster would never be Honest !!! LOL the sarcastic irony here is GOLD !!!
So, basically what I'm getting is: in 2017, yugioh powercreep accelerated exponentially.

I use it in my Rokket deck in Master Duel and hoo boy it is OP.
Witches strike cannot be activated against hand traps like ash blossom. Witches strike has to be activated after an ACTIVATION was negated, not an EFFECT, so only certain hand traps trigger witches strike, or solemn cards.
Dammit you beat me to it
It works against Psy-fragegear Gamma and Ghost belle
What REALLY makes Witch's Strike completely suck as a card is that it cannot be activated from the hand. Then again, if it COULD be activated from the hand it'd be one of the most broken hand traps in the game due to the abundance of omni-negates in YGO today.
This is one of those traps that's either broken as balls or a complete piece of shit due to its activation conditions. There is literally no middle ground here.
@@cameraredeye3115 just look at triple tactical talents. It's effects are considerably less powerful (but still broken) and it's a legit win condition if you activate it. If Witch's Strike was a spell card it'd be permanently banned for all eternity.

DuelLogs: Life points don't matter
Also DuelLogs: Life points are how you win games
Me: ok
According to many youtube-videos, life points don‘t matter, because the amount is usually quite small. You have to be careful with cards which make you pay huge amounts of LP.

He means it doesn’t matter if you have 1 or 10000 when you win; you still win. This mainly applies to heavy life point cost good effect cards. Of course don’t lose all of them, but if you’re planning on winning this turn (or the next if you just used a trap) it doesn’t matter how many you spend if the payoff is good. Great video. Your explanations always help me better understand the competitive use of cards since I only play casual.
I will say that I absolutely love Witch’s Strike despite it not being a counter trap. I do wish it was a counter trap but it’s designed to be a revenge nuke after baiting your opponent into negating another card they think is your actual goal.
When played right I feel like it’s amazing, but I do hate that Red Reboot can negate it so easily. But such is dueling...
witch's strike sounds good for mind games if your opponent knows you have it
grand mole is why i love abyss soldier. Bouncing cards is so good especially the extra deck. Granted abyss soldier is only water but its amazing in water. The discard cost is easily negated by sinister serpent (even after erreta) treeborn frog, or atlanteans, whale, dragon ice etc all which love being discarded.
I appreciate you being so articulate and detailed. Keep up the good work dawg
4:35 I haven't kept up with the Yu-Gi-Oh meta... well, ever - just the ban lists really. But I remember a time when Demise, King of Armageddon seemed like one of the most powerful cards in the entire game... so a card that searches out End of the World *and* Demise King of Armageddon just seems absurd to me.
Then again, I fell out of modern Yu-Gi-Oh! at the end of the 5Ds era - I suppose that was about when individual card effects generally started seeming way too ridiculous in power to me.
EDIT: Every now and then I look at nearly any given modern Yu-Gi-Oh card and think "Back in my day this would've been Banned!" XD
I played until 5Ds as well, and Lord, when I tried to get back into it, they had XYZ, pendulum, links, and only one extra deck monster per field. Too complicated for me now!
@@asaacisimov8621 friend got me back into it a month ago because they have alot of new support for older decks, and they got rid of that 1 extra deck monster on field rule. Also most older banned cards are back in use
Actually, I'm just stupid it seems. I've been playing it on switch the last two days and i just found out i can totally have more than one extra deck monster. Dunno how I got that idea in my head haha

"Top 10 cards that special summon during the battle phase"😁
Does Lost World count? You will be using the token protection effect+baby Dino a lot during the battle phase if you open a shitty hand.
Eater of Millions is not a better Grand Mole. The two cards have similar applications, but they are different enough that I'd say both are equally viable. Also Grand Mole has no downside whereas for Eater of Millions you have to banish 5 cards to summon him. Mole can be used to bounce back problematic extra deck monsters, then saved in the hand for later when you need him again. Eater on the other hand is easier to get rid of in the short term, and is mainly only good to get rid of one or two problematic cards. Also mole is level 3 which makes allows him to go into better Xyz monsters. That said eater is dark type which is better, though it also has more counters than mole.
I run 3 copies of Honest in my Blue-Eyes deck, and it's extremely effective.
Royal Decree is still better than Red Reboot in decks that run zero traps, also I think RR is limited now, that said if I was gonna run RR I'd also run Trap Stun.
I'd never run Burning Mirror Force unless I'm also running Barrel Behind the Door (or something similar). I used to run Dice Jar with Barrel Behind the Door, but the problem was I never got Barrel when I needed it so I dropped both cards.

So… We now have had a _Dark_ version of this for some time now:
_Dark Honest_ (DARK)
Level 4
Fairy/Effect
_Once per turn, during your Main Phase: You can return this face-up card to the hand. During the Damage Step, when your DARK monster battles an opponent's monster (Quick Effect): You can send this card from your hand to the GY; that opponent's monster loses ATK equal to its own ATK, until the end of this turn._
ATK/1100 DEF/1900
SO, with the above stated, I wanted to pitch an idea for a “Chaos” Honest:
_Chaos Honest_ (LIGHT)
Level 8
Fairy/Tuner/Effect
_This card’s original attribute is always also treated as DARK. You can normal summon this card without tributes if you control a face-up “Chaos” Field Spell. During your Main Phase: You can return this face-up card to your hand. During the Damage Step, when a LIGHT or DARK monster you control battles (Quick Effect): You can send this card from your hand to the GY; that monster gains ATK equal to the ATK of the opponent's monster it is battling, and also, that opponent's monster loses ATK equal to its own ATK, until the end of this turn._
ATK/2200 DEF/3800

Pre-prep: "doesn't get used"
Relinquished: Allow me to introduce myself"
No Snake Rain, no view😤
I still have my copy of Gorz when I bought it from a friend around 12-13 years ago. I haven’t gone to a tournament yet, but I always try to save a spot for it in my more powerful decks.
Also, I’m still waiting for them to make ‘Kaien the Emissary of Darkness’ a real card. You’d think that since they came out with the Wicked Gods, that they would’ve come out with Kaien as well.
Neo spacian grand mole was the bane of my existence in Duel Generations

I use pre-prep I'm my relinquished millennium eyes deck
What else would you play?
