Thought Hukum should have been the mild favorite in a difficult race to handicap. After all, he had the best RPR figure. He had crushed Pyledriver. He had beaten Desert Crown. He seems to be getting better with age. That said, Westover ran the best race here. He's been good all year. He was never close to Equinox, but he might have won at Epson with a better ride and he certainly might have won here if he got some cover.
It was disappointing to see Auguste Rodin pull up. AOB doesn't make too many mistakes, but running here seemed like one of them even beforehand. I hope he's not forced into retirement with an injury. I would like to see him pointed towards the BC Classic. He's got nothing to lose by trying, and there are no "Flightlines" in the US this year.

This was an incredibly high quality horse race. They went a solid end-to-end gallop and the 2nd wasn’t stopping, the pair pulling clear of high class 3yo King Of Steel. Jim Crowley said it’s the best horse race he has ever ridden in. Sure, he was probably emotional but he’s one of most experienced jockeys in the weighing room and no one rides Ascot better. So if that isn’t saying something, I honestly don’t know what is. This horse may never win again given the leg injury he had last year… but what a day and what a performance this was! Let’s not forget he did the same thing in the Guineas too. Aidan has been the first to admit he’s still getting used to training these Deep Impacts, so perhaps he simply doesn’t take his racing as well as the Galileos he’s been sweeping up with for years.
In any case, King Of Steel who finished behind Auguste Rodin in the Derby still ran his race and suggests the fav wouldn’t have been too far away had he run his race. He clearly didn’t.
What made this a high class horse race was the solid end-to-end gallop they went, the fact the first two weren’t stopping and were pulling further clear inside the final furlong, and the fact it was full of multiple G1 horses. This form will prove to be high class in time.

Westover covered a much greater distance the majority of the race due to draw 10 and even more importantly with no cover. Hukum was in the box seat most of the race with cover due to draw 4 but did have to run wide like Westover round the bend and did well to make up the ground on Westover who got first run. Do not under estimate August Rodants next performance. Pace and the going ruined his chances. He’s to good of a racehorse to be discounted.
The race was nicely set up for Hukum. Pace and the going helped him a lot. He’s a true stayer in every sense of the word.
He could be a virtual cinch in his next start if it’s Arc de Triomph.
