    Thanks for the tip on the Rock Exotica mini 'biners. Just picked up a few from a local supplier here in Canada to use with my dynaglide retrieval line. Really appreciate your detailed reviews and recommendations on gear....pure gold for someone like me that is just getting into saddle hunting and trying to put together the best rig I can from the start. After a lot of research, I settled on much of what you use, Canyon Elite, Madrock, Ohm tether locker, dynaglide line and now RE mini-biners. If I decide to try one-sticking, I'll definitely go for the EWO Ulitmate One Stick.
    Keep the great one sticking videos coming.....very much looking forward to the whole series.

The guy that walked up on me gutting my deer and quartering it out had a look of astonishment. It was priceless! He said he drug one all day from back there and almost died. I run the exact same setup as you except I run a 15 inch stick. Also I tried the pack and play and didn't care for it. I'd rather just wrap my aider around the stick. I use tethred pouches to hold my rope and everything. I have a brand new tx5 pouch I ordered but don't like the way it hooks up to my cruzr saddle plus it's a little to stiff for my likings.

  • @WIBloodbrother
    @WIBloodbrother 5 місяців тому +1

    Hi Greg. Thanks for your exceptional videos. I have adopted a number or your equipment and technique recommendations. Question for you. Hunting in the rain has been something I've traditionally avoided as I am retired and can pick my days to hunt. However, I continue to hear about the success one can have on mature bucks in inclement weather and had intended on gearing up for this in the coming season. Yesterday, I was in the woods off-season scouting and decided to prep a tree overlooking a significant scrape. A brief rain shower came in while at height with my one-sticking gear. Later, as I rappelled down, it was exceedingly difficult to descend. The Madrock Safeguard would not smoothly allow the Canyon Elite rope to slide like it normally does. Only when pulling extremely hard on the lever would the rope slide through. And then when it did slide, it would give way in chunks of rope uncomfortably fast. Have you experienced this?

    • @StaggsintheWild
      @StaggsintheWild  5 місяців тому

      Yes. You have to be extra-careful when rappelling on a wet rope, as it will become “grabby” as I call it. What I do is just slow way down and walk myself down the tree much more slowly than I normally do with my “Navy Seal bounding technique”, lol.

    • @WIBloodbrother
      @WIBloodbrother 5 місяців тому +1

      "Grabby" is the perfect word. Most of the time on that rappel, it took all my arm strength on the lever to even start the rope sliding in the Safeguard. I was concerned about even getting down as, since this was not a hunting situation, I had already dropped my one stick to the ground. I'm six feet tall and 230 (five pounds into a 35 pound weight loss goal). Perhaps my extra weight had something to do with the extra friction through the Safeguard. Hopefully, slimming down by season will reduce the friction and make it easier to slide down with a wet rope. The one stick will be with me on the way down as a backup in case I have to take the load off the rope to work my way down the tree. And I will take caution and slow down. Thanks again, Greg.

    Big fan of your videos. I've been injured over the years and now I have to use a crossbow. I can tell you it's harder to use one than a bow on a platform. The string hits the tree a lot on this shots where the deer come behind the tree. Of course we can wait until they pass but a lot of those shots are walking away with no shot opportunity. Any tips for us guys? Thanks!

    Have you tried hooking your dyna glide on the rappel side of your quick link. I did this 2022 season so far and have not had any hang ups. Climbed over limbs in 3 occasions and still no hangups pulling the rope through the quick link to get it down while standing next to the tree not walking away from the tree spreading scent making noise to break the rappel rope loose.

    • @StaggsintheWild
      @StaggsintheWild  Рік тому +1

      Yeah, you’ll eventually hang up probably. The only thing that’s going to “catch” when pulling your rope out of a tree is your scaffold knot & quick link … so I want that out and away from the tree as quickly as possible. That’s why I hook up right behind it.

    Thanks for all the great videos!! I’m new into saddle hunting and recently got my saddle and right now I’m using the wild edge steps but I have to say this one sticking looks great. The one thing I’m wondering is in the winter I usually pick my heavy clothes in and put them on once I’m at my spot. You can do it by hand, or you don’t even have to undo it al all; it’ll come undone on its own just with you pulling it. Stay tuned and I’ll throw up a fresh video tomorrow evening JUST about where and how to clip your pull-down rope on!

      @@StaggsintheWild Gotcha I wasn't sure if the rappel rope would pull down easily or not with the tether locker still clipped on. Do you typically unclip it before rappelling down or just pull it through once you rappel down?

      @@KillingStuffWithJosephJackson I always unclip it by hand just because once I'm to the point of clipping my mini carabiner onto it, I'm already thinking about it and I'm there, so I might as well go ahead and remove it from the rope... but it's nice to know that if for some reason I didn't, it'll pull right off anyway, even from the ground. I've tested it just to make sure. :)

      I have had an issue with the quick links locking in to a point I can’t unscrew so I have usually tightened and then backed it off a quarter turn. Also started carrying a small wrench in case it locks in after sitting all day. Looking for an option to not have to screw and unscrew a quick link. Also definately appreciate all the videos. I've never had the quick link I use lock up (Petzl oval) and don't know of anyone that has... hardware store links are prone to doing it, as are delta links to an extent. But... Hi Greg, I have a question about your TX5 dump pouch for your repel rope. Do the MadRock Safeguard and the quick link fit in the pouch with the rope as well or do you have to stow them someplace else? Does that pouch have any exterior pockets on it like the SYS Hauler ES has?

    • @StaggsintheWild

      It ALL fits in there … I thought I showed that in the video? Yes … no problems. My pouch has one flat mesh pocket on the outside that I use to hold my milkweed … though I’m sure if you wanted true “pockets” on the side Matthew would make you one like that.

      @StaggsintheWild  Рік тому +2

      @@mekhigooden432 Here's the quick scoop: A one-sticking stick is nothing more than a placeholder between your top platform (or step) and the aider. That's it.
      The whole goal of one-sticking is to cut out bulk and save weight, in a nutshell. As such, it makes sense to have the smallest stick possible that you don't have to worry about kicking out on you, all things considered. I know a couple guys who actually climb with 10" sticks.
      Your gains in one-sticking come from your MOVES -- not the length of your stick. I'm going to show in my video next week that you can only reach so high up on a tree -- be it your FIRST move, or with every subsequent move thereafter. As a result -- the only "advantage" someone would have in a longer stick is the length from the middle (where they hold onto the stick and place it onto the tree...) to the TOP. if you're talking about a stick that's three inches longer, well... in reality then you can cut that distance in half and you'd only gain 1.5" in climbing height by going from a 12" stick to a 15" stick. So in three moves (about the most I ever have to make to get to hunting height, you've only gained four inches on me if you use a 15" stick compared to my 12" stick -- and I'll take the weight savings and bulk savings of my stick over yours. :)
      The only caveat to this philosophy is if you have a pack (backpack or saddle bag on an e-bike, etc.) where a 15" stick just PACKS better than a 12" stick... I know guys who will get a longer stick JUST for that reason.
      Hope that helps, and you now have a good outline of what my next video will cover. :)
