There is a way to play solos or improvise over a song you've never heard before, even if you don't know in what key it is or which scale to use.
This is called the chord-scale method, and I'll walk you through how to do it on top of 2 different songs in this video.
The chord-scale method works great to play solos over any pop/rock/blues/country song - no need to identify the key!
Let's dive in!

This is easier than I thought it was going to be!
Good stuff
Interesting. Helpful. Intelligible....... Proof is in the pudding. I am going to work at it. I have been doing something similar but not with a complete idea of what I'm attempting. This is helpful..... Thanks a lot.
Ah Ah Ah Da Da Ba Da
Do Da Da Day B.S.
The Weeknd. Save Your Tears.
this amounts to disharmonizing the chords in their parent scale.
This is exactly the opposite process of harmonization and therefore, of the construction of chords from a given scale. 😉
This is way more complicated than just knowing the key
Not really! Because the main and essential difference by following this method, is that you always target the correct chord when it is played in the harmony (target notes). This allows you to precisely highlight each underlying chord during your improvisation, rather than playing the notes of the scale randomly, without really knowing where you are in relation to the chords of the song.
That’s the big advantage. 😉
