I agree with you about this.
Any minute particles will go through the tap and get caught in the fuel filter which is an easy replacement.
Some jobs simply aren't worth the effort.

Excellent and very wise! There must be a cut-off between what you do and what the owner does. If I had asked someone to sort out my gearbox then he said "By the way, I dismantled your petrol tank and cleaned it out which has increased the bill" I wouldn't have been very happy. On the other hand, if they said "You might want to look closely at the state of the tank" that would be fine. I don't think the owner needs to be told though, judging by that inline fuel filter.

Take no notice of the arm chair brigade. You are a great problem solver ensuring all types of motorcycles that arrive at your place of "business" are mechanically sound and fixed. It is often the case you go beyond the remit with safety in mind to make sure the job is right, by ongoing communication with your customers. I note you get agreement to carry on any additional work in stages. That is if required after finding issues as you come across them during a job. At that stage it is up to the customer to pay should they wish you to go ahead. The difference is you are not obliged to rebuild every bike that comes in only to attend the work asked for. Again I note it is normally only any essential work at that. You come across as a very honest tradesman which is not always the case these days. Your retort to the nay-sayers is spot on. Keep up the good work 👍

My T160 , the previous owner, had the oil tank painted by a professional , probably a few years back , but it had odd oil pressure issues, like rev it up and oil pressure went down , it was cavitating , because of paint that was
95% blocking the strainer , from over spray down the neck . Cheers 👍

If you address the problem it’s there for, your on firm ground. Rewiring it because you didn’t like the blue connectors and insulation tape wrapping, is doing something you hadn’t been asked to do. Probably people forget that these aren’t all your bikes and there’s a big difference when you’re expecting to be paid for three jobs but only accepted one.

I’m sure if the owner wanted the tank done he would have asked. Some things are better left untouched especially a rare tank like that. You did a great job on what you were asked to do .

This was less of rant, more an expanded explanation.
I would like to think that the query behind the rather crudely worded 'lazy' comment was a concern for detritus causing repeated blocking of the carburettor, the remedying of which would distract from the road testing part of the job. However has the commenter missed that in line filter?

Paul I get it! Unless asked or totally required some things are best left alone if the performance of the machine is not comprised! When it comes to customer machines, time is money & some procedures are similar to opening a can of worms! These situations are where experience & liabilities have to be weighed carefully! Carry on old chap!👍

    Well Paul.
Been watching your videos for a while now.
And you seem to me to be a very experienced and capable person to work on people's vintage bikes.
I know doubt if you ever got a bike in and was struggling to get to the bottom of the problem you would ask the viewers for ideas.
But in general you always come up trumps in fixing the problems anyway. And you have your own way in doing things.
You bet your bottom dollar the people who try to tell you how to do the job have never held a spanner in their lives.
Love the videos keep them coming fella.
    Very enjoyable watching.

    I've been a welder/fabricator for 48 years
    I'm a coded welder
I couldn't count the amount of times people have told me i'm doing something wrong
    Wrong amps
    Wrong prep

I recently had my tank repaired and repainted a lovely job. After a few rides I had to tinker with the electrics so I took the tank off just to give myself a bit more room and chipped my very nice paint. Moral of the story don't do jobs you don't have to.

I can understand a viewer asking why you didn’t do a procedure from purely an enquiring point, not criticism. Sadly the simple answer is your time costs the customer money and they haven’t requested anything that involves the procedure concerned. A good rant anyway!

    Well said Paul
The job was the gearbox not the tank if the owner had said do the fuel system as well fair enough. If it was your own or my own bike well that's a different story. I'm sure no-one would be happy if you said I've fixed the box that £? And by the way I fixed your fuel system too even though you didn't ask and that's another ?£. That the owner may not have at hand. It's bad enough when a simple job you thought turns into something much bigger and unexpected. All the best keep at it 👍👍👍

I am working on an bullet that hasn't ran for years. With the tank, which was filthy, I filled it with %5 cleaning vinegar, I use this to clean rust off old tools etc. left it for a few days and drained it out, a lot of crap came out, I then flushed it with water and let it dry in the heat of the day. once dry, I squirted WD40 in to stop rust. I will slosh some fuel around and drain it again before filling with petrol.

@JohnChamberlain-ef4ro Hi John, I tried the 9% vinegar it's the cleaning strength stuff , used it on my goldwing tank , it helped but, not enough, I then tried the electrolysis method with washing soda and a battery charger , I put a steel tube inside a bit of bicycle tube with a few holes and had that down the sender hole , it works fantastic. Cheers

I take your view. Avoid all unnecessary dismantling on old bikes. Its so easy to cause damage. I recently washed a tank out with petrol and shook it will a handful of nuts and washers in. It was filthy job and I'm not sure it made much difference.

Makes sense to me. The guy brought it in for the gearbox, not to have his tank flushed. That's one of those jobs most people who own vintage bikes can do themselves if they choose. I love that bike but the tank does seem like a royal pain in the butt to get off and on. I like my unit 650's... undo 3 bolts, take off the fuel line and remove the tank. Very easy. My old Honda CB750 was even easier... no bolts holding that one on. You undo one fuel line then lift the seat and take the tank off.

Tank liners are a pain. I purchased an old Honda. Lined the tank to the letter. Petrol dissolved it. Stopped the engine and one inlet was open. Next time I started it the piston hit it. The liner glued the valve open.

Much too complex of a tank removal unless one absolutely has to. Paint problems, chrome problems, electric problems all have to be dealt with…flush the tank as you did…if it at some time in the past was coated on the inside and that coating is breaking down that’s another problem the owner didn’t want fixed…

    @williamdavies3295 3 дні тому +2

You are too thin skinned!. These armchair mechanics think they know it all, reality is they know f all. You are the one doing the work, so you have carte blanche as to how you get the work done. I note that you have a good inline filter that ought to take care of a lot of debris coming through.
Take no notice of the “expert” comments. If they don’t like what & how you do things, then bog off & watch something else. So many vids on you tube are simply full of pointless talk & not actually doing any work at all. In other words, no useful content. This is a great channel, full of expertise from many years of actually doing all kinds of work on bikes!.
