What about doing a stunted growth on the 08-09 and 94-95 Orlando Magic teams and a stunted growth on Nick Anderson, Dennis Scott, Jameer Nelson, Reece Gaines or anyone else on the Orlando Magic?
Good choice! Those Dwight Howard led teams with Rashard Lewis on the wing were fun, but just not talented enough, Stan Van Gundy (overrated IMO) didn't help either.
I saw this and immediately clicked. I'm watching now, but I can tell you I'm still sick after watching the championship game in 2008. Huge Tigers fan back then....damn it was horrible. Then Calipari left...just all went to hell.

Great description on D-Rose's game at the 1:42 mark. He didn't have that silky smooth type of game, but very herky-jerky with super change of pace and explosiveness. What I loved about his game was his passion/excitement. I guess the most similar player I can think of to Rose is Russell Westbrook. I remember routing for neither team that night; not a fan of Bill Self and Kansas, and don't get me started on Calipari who needed a STACKED Kentucky team with Anthony Davis to win his 1st Championship.

I really like how you said that you never heard a comparison to d rose that made sense. I totally agree, he had such a unique explosiveness to his style of playing. I know everybody always says “man if he didn’t get those injuries”… but I honestly feel like it would’ve happened at some point down the line because his style of play when he was young wasn’t very sustainable on the body. He ended up having to play a much different game but it’s really cool to see him still playing in the league, I’ll always root for him. As much as the free throws get talked about, I think Kansas' execution in that final two minutes gets overlooked. They had to make plays for those missed free throws to matter. I mean Darrel Arthur knocking down a jump shot from just inside the three point line, which was outside of his normal range. Then Sherron Collins stealing the inbounds pass and then resetting in the corner to knock down a huge three. Mario Chalmers hitting two clutch free throws on a one and one when the pressure was on. And then of course Mario's Miracle (even though it's not really a miracle, because he has hit that shot on the exact same play before. The year prior he hit it to send the Big 12 Tournament Championship game into OT, against a Kevin Durant lead Texas team.) Then of course KU executed almost perfectly in OT to win it all. This Championship game doesn't get the recognition it deserves in my opinion. One of the best of all time. First and only (so far) Final Four where all number 1 seeds left. I truly believe that Kansas was the best overall team in the country. Memphis was great, but if you look at the season averages of both Memphis and Kansas, they're almost identical and Kansas had tougher schedule, but this game could've gone either way.

1 of the overlooked stunts from the team that year was the backup PG Andre Allen being suspended for the championship game. The stunts mentioned in the video wouldn’t have gotten to that point with Allen playing. Rose was more skilled, but Allen was a much better floor general in the half court game
Its an odd feeling when you KNOW the favored team is choking. As a Cleveland fan, its usually one of our teams. Like beinf ahead and a marathon and cant make it the last few feet. But this reminded me of the 2016 finals. I didnt want to count our chickens before they hatched, but most of us knew Golden State was feeling the pressure and would lose game 7 no matter how close. I felt the same way going into OT about Memphis
I went to ECU at the time (at the same time Chris Johnson was playing football there). They were in CUSA with Memphis (whose football team at some point had Deangelo Williams on it). We wanted to come to the game to watch Rose do his thing on them. Unfortunately, this was the only downside of me studying abroad during bball season. I found a spot in Quito to watch the championship after Kansas got in UNC's ass. You know how mad I was they lost that game? One of the greatest teams I had seen. Couldn't believe it.
As a die-hard Memphis fan and alumni, this is still extremely hard to watch. I went to every home game that year (while I was still in high school). My friend and I spent most of our money going to those games lol. The only thing I’d add to this video was how much Joey Dorsey fouling out affected us in OT. As soon as he fouled out, everyone in Memphis was probably praying it didn’t go to OT. If I remember right, he was dominating defensively in that game. As soon as f’in Chalmers hit that 3, I knew the game was over. The only time I ever lost my cool was when we lost that game. Punched a hole in the wall of my family’s living room. I was grounded for quite a long time.
Cal left to Kentucky took everything, including the office phone. He left a national admired program with a line of tremendously talented recruits a mile long. Headed to a completely dead in the water Kentucky program " dream job" has a who's who of NBA talent over 14 years and has ONE championship. In that same period 3 other schools with lesser talent have at least 2. Had Cal stayed at Memphis he may of had a Dynasty. His last season Memphis lost to Missouri in the final 8, and Cal looked like he didn't care if they won or not.
I was sooooooooooooooooooo fuckin pissed about this game. Memphis was possibly the single best college team in history if not the the very least - the top 2 or three! CDR who had been ice not just all season, but for his whole career with regards to making big time plays and hitting clutch shots and free-throws, so to see him miss those foul shots was absolutely crushing. He wasn't ever a great FT shooter in the first place, but was a great FT shooter in clutch situations - which makes it all the sadder knowing that alot of people will only remember him for this game. Rose also missed a bunch of FT's don the stretch too, but he was a Freshman and not the experienced vet that CDR was. Speaking of which CDR should have been a great pro. His outside shooting wasn't the best, but certainly wasn't the worst, and because he was so long and athletic, even without blazing speed he still was able to drive by guys throughout his pro career. His biggest problem was/is the exact same issue many great wings of that era and the stretching back throughout the 90's, he was simply far too damn unselfish and just lacked the assertiveness that he had in college. For this reason he was constantly under-utilized by his coaches. Alot of people underestimate the amount to which a both a players lack of confidence, along with the lack of confidence that their coaches/teams have regarding said player, when it comes to understanding why certain guys failed while others succeed. And this is why you see guys who have the skills and physical ability to produce a hell of a lot more points but are underutilized by their coaches, which which increases the player's lack of self-confidence. And that sadly is what happened with CDR imo. Loved his game, and loved that Memphis team even more!
As a Memphis Tigers alum, that Mario Chalmers 3 pointer still hurt. I still remember how somber the campus was the next day after we lost. smh #damnyouchalmers #ifonlyfreethrowsdidntexist
Watched the 2008 National Title game between Memphis And Kansas…Despite A Great Game From Both Teams, When Mario Chalmers hit the game tying three to sent the game into overtime, I was thinking Kansas is gonna turn up in overtime….TBH, Memphis what y’all thinking in the last few minutes of game…Randy Moss voice:Memphis…come on man…wanted to laugh but couldn’t smh lol…
So Who Would Y’all Argue Has Had The Better Career D.Rose Or Mario Chalmers? Before We Say D.Rose (Individually) Chalmers Is A x2 NBA Champion And An NCAA Champion As Well. He Was Solid In All Of His Title Runs . So Who Really Had The Better Career ?
This team should have been 40-0. Calipari shares blame for both of the losses. That team could play in the half court and full court.. Tennessee could not play half court ball that year. Calipari should have made that a half court game, he didn’t and Tennessee won. In the Kansas game Calipari got scared and didn’t play the bench. Kansas used their bench, their guys were fresh and executed at the end of the game. Our guys were gassed and didn’t. ( In addition but not to disagree in any way with the original post.. the original post is accurate in my opinion)
I watched him and Eric Gordon in Vegas in the Vegas Big time he played for the Mean Streets he committed to Illinois and Eric Gordon at first they lost to a loaded Southern California team with Brandon Jennings Taylor king and Ronaldo Sydney and then Daniel Hackett
That still hurts, then we have to see Chalmers for a season when he was playing with the Grizzlies!! That loss and UNLV to Duke in semi finals, I hated Lattener . Duke was good but the Rebels blew Duke out by 30 points in the Championship game the previous season to win the NCAA Championship. UNLV finished the season unbeaten and was on 45 game winning heading in the semi final game versus #6 Duke 26-7 led by Christian Lattener, Bobby Hurley and freshman Grant Hill . Duke pulled the upset winning 79-77 too advance too the National Championship game for the 2nd year in a row , this time winning 72-65 versus University of Kansas Jayhawks giving Duke their 1st NCAA Championship in school history. Oh yeah Duke defended their title to repeat ; Last team that repeated was UCLA led by Kareem in 1962, Duke won 71-51 against Michigan's Fab Five for 2nd NC.
Mentally they lost . So many opportunities they had to win the game. This Memphis team reminds so much of the time when the 73-9 warriors lost that 3-1 lead . They were the best team in the league and dominating every team . But when it came to the Finals they lost and mentally they weren’t prepared. Memphis tigers lost this game mentally as well such a good team they were but mentally they weren’t prepared . Derrick rose won 2 state champs in high school and took this Memphis team to the national championship game as a freshman. Really goes to show he could of possibly won 2 championships or 3 in the NBA if he was healthy . For a 16 17 18 year old to take a high school team and college to championship games like that is truly a gift. Somewhat similar to what Lebron can do derrick rose somehow had it as well ability to carry a team and make players around him better thats a gift .
Actually Dajuan Wagner was coach Cals first big McDonald's All American & high school national player of the year and his first 1 and done? 4 yrs before D.Rose arrived!
Says Cal didn't make any splash at Memphis until the 2008 season, and that he didn't understand at the time why D Rose chose Memphis over blue bloods... well that's not really true at all. Memphis was a #1 seed in 2006 and a #2 seed in 2007, winning over 30 games both seasons. They returned most everybody and would've been preseason top 10 without landing DRose. Rose knew coming to Memphis for a year that it would be a special season and Memphis needed an elite PG to go along with its core. Also Cal was signing #1 and top 5 recruits to Memphis several of his years with the help of his World Wide Wes connection. He signed DaJuan Wagner, Rose and Tyreke Evans.... got commitments from Amare Stoudamire and Kendrick Perkins who both went pro before coming, and he had Xavier Henry and DeMarcus Cousins committed before taking the Kentucky job.
I feel like academics was really the biggest problem and while Memphis and maybe others were willing to bend corners to cheat the system, I highly doubt an institution like Duke with a basketball program headed by Coach K would’ve sacrificed sanctions for getting D Rose.
Bro... me and Dad had season tickets that season. We were the biggest fans. The Memphis v Tennessee game was the loudest arena i've ever heard. My parents went to San Antonio for the Final Four... This video just makes me sick. I'm a 24 year old senior at the UofM. We are still salty about it lol. Things are looking up though.
How's about the '91 UNLV Rebs lost to Duke..ive watchec that game at least 50 times..(over 25 yrs) and i still cant figure out how they lost that game..Damn!!

The stunts mentioned in the video wouldn’t have gotten to that point with Allen playing. Rose was more skilled, but Allen was a much better floor general in the half court game
They do that to alot of Calipari teams. Enes kanter was one. If kentucky had him, they were unbeatable and the ncaa knew it.
Mario Chalmers was no scrub on the NBA level either.
He was the same Mario. Dude just got that clutch gene on lock.
Great breakdown
Free throws. Smh they had that problem all season. That was the tournament when I discovered Steph Curry at Davidson too
Derrick roses body control was ridiculous. He was like a video game player in real life.
I have never watched this game since it went down. This video is the closest I have gotten to watching it.
1:10 Derrick rose almost kills a man with a hand shake lol
I saw that to. Derrick would have been in jail for abuse.
This hurts till this day💯
Coach Cal got up out of there with the quickness and got a helluva opportunity afterward lol
Yea, now that Penny's there he's scared 2 play us.
I hated Calipari until he came to my wildcats and I hated this team but they were a scary team
You should do Chalmers!!
Oh it still stings
Still mad sherron Collins didn't make it to the league frfr solid player!
We doing a Stunted Growth series on teams now? Cool. Gotta definitely do one on the University of Houston’s Phi Slamma Jamma teams of the early 80s.
Have you done a video about Bryce Dejean-Jones? It’s a tragic story every young hooper can learn from.
Hate to agree with your critique of him? Spot on.
Rose
Rose individually, Mario because he was with the heat and Lebron. If rose had Bron, Rose would have a ring or 2.
Watching Derrick rose in college rocking #23 legendary in its own right
This team should have been 40-0.
CDR was my boy!!!
Do da Fab 5 and da 05 Illini team. Also da undefeated Unlv team. Those were my NCAA basketball heartbreaks
I watched him and Eric Gordon in Vegas in the Vegas Big time he played for the Mean Streets he committed to Illinois and Eric Gordon at first they lost to a loaded Southern California team with Brandon Jennings
Taylor king and Ronaldo Sydney and then Daniel Hackett
yo do you know who keith spellman is he went to jefferson high in the early mid 2000s
Can’t erase what was seen.
Mario was one of the best defensive guards ever he broke the ku steals record that year
That still hurts, then we have to see Chalmers for a season when he was playing with the Grizzlies!!
That's facts! Forgot about the Camden god!
Duke definitely wasn't gonna cut it for him at that time
I feel like academics was really the biggest problem and while Memphis and maybe others were willing to bend corners to cheat the system, I highly doubt an institution like Duke with a basketball program headed by Coach K would’ve sacrificed sanctions for getting D Rose.
steve francis was drose before drose what you mean? and as far for seeing someone close to rose right now for a long time, russell westbrook.
You gotta do a Stunted Growth on the '19 Duke team
One of the greatest national championship games ever.
Bro... me and Dad had season tickets that season. We were the biggest fans. The Memphis v Tennessee game was the loudest arena i've ever heard. My parents went to San Antonio for the Final Four... This video just makes me sick. I'm a 24 year old senior at the UofM. We are still salty about it lol. Things are looking up though.
You should’ve went more in depth on each of the key players on their team because a lot of them were affected by the suspension
D. Rose is my man!!! But I was cheering for Kansas in this one!
Being from Memphis that game still makes me mad 😠 😡
Memphis TN here
Shit looks like the Magic vs Rockets in the finals on some Nick Anderson type shit.
How's about the '91 UNLV Rebs lost to Duke..ive watchec that game at least 50 times..(over 25 yrs) and i still cant figure out how they lost that game..Damn!!
Chris Kaman Next on the Stunted Growth series? 2010 All Star
From then on Mario Chalmers continued to make BIG Shots in the league,He could be depended on down stretch.
He just had better teams he fell off after bron left
