- As promised, this is the 4th episode of my Dr Vstrom video series about the maintenance of the Cooling System. Instructions on how to replace your engine coolant properly as well as inspect and clean the radiator and its parts.
The tutorial demonstrates on my DL 650 Vstrom L0 model but the steps are applicable to the entire Vstrom family and any other bike out there, so enjoy.

Really great tip to leave the radiator cap on until the drain plug is out.

Hi ylism, what i ve found is as I say in the video no matter how much you squeze the tubes, tap the thermostat or leave the cap off, the air will not go comletely. Riding the bike ensures that the air will go towards the plastic reservoir and you will get rir of it. You may then fill from there without removing the gas tank again. You can get a tube and funnel and fill in this way. I only took the tank out for illustrative purposes so that the viewer may see what i am doing. Thanks for watching

Another top-quality maintenance video! I will start the annual procedures with this one, just waiting for the torque wrench. However, according to Suzuki's manual, you must put a minimum of 50% and a maximum of 60% coolant and fill the rest with distilled water.
No idea what is Suzuki's logic behind this recommendation 😶

great video, like all the others, useful and clear, thanks to you I am putting my neglected 650 to "new". I did the video procedure, but I am already on the second ride and the plastic reservoir always remains usual level. maybe because I filled it above the maximum line? I had tried to cheat by putting more liquid so as not to have to insert more .... maybe that's why? moreover, the liquid contained in the reservoir tank is not hot and having the water pump bolt to let out some liquid, the tank always remains full. what's wrong? Thank you in advance.
You should not have filled the plastic reservoir above the max line. Make sure that you remove some more radiator fluid from the plastic reservoir with a syringe or tube until line is just a bit bellow max. Close the cap of plastic reservoir. and then start the bike with the radiator cap off for a min to ensure air comes out. Just squeze also a bit the tubes for the bubbles to move. Close the engine and that cap. Start the engine again and leave wirking until the radiator fan kicks in. This will open thd thermostat to exchange coolant. Then close the bike and let the engine cool. Then check the plastic reservoir and only if its a lot below max, fill to max.

Sorry I don't know but you can check this with the part numbers of the 2 radiators and years of the models www.suzukipartshouse.com/oemparts/c/suzuki_motorcycle/parts. If the same codes, yes

In the first 650 V-Strom the coolant Reservoir was easy accessable.
When moved suzuki this tank unter the Gastank?
Because of the ABS system, they needed to route it differently since 2008 ⛽

No its not if you tight to the specified torque and the washer is in good state :)

Hello, in general there is always some play so it may be normal. Just to be on the safe side, may i ask if you recently removed the rear wheel? Also have you checked all the bolts to be tight?. Hola, mi vstrom 650 DL año 2012, pasa agua al motor ya le cambie estoperas y sello mecánico y aún así sigue pasando agua al motor quería saber si hay otra falla que pueda ocasionar este problema, o saber si la empacadura de la tapa tiene algo que ver?

Not sure if I missed it or not but do you ever tighten the drain bolt more then just hand tight?
I always use the torques stated in the manual.
Hi John, I see you have an oil temperature gauge in the oil fill hole, what of kind meter is this? How long should be the temperature pin? Regards from Holland :)
You can buy 2 such oil temperature instruments. You want the one with the long end so as to reach the oil and be more accurate on the temperature. Search on the web and you will find sources to buy.

I bought the cheaper one with no long end for my V strom. It's half the price, and it will still do what you want it to do: it shows when the engine oil is at it's best temperature. The meter on the dashboard however, is not reliable for engine oil temperature. You can buy it at many online shops.

Great videos. I have a few questions.
1) At the start of this video, you recommend having two funnels, one small and one with a hose. However, I don't recall seeing you use the one with the hose.
2) Also, you recommend having distilled water, but I don't recall you using it during the video.
4) Are you filling both the radiator and the reservoir after each ride until the proper level is achieved?
5) Do you have a video for checking the valve clearance?
6) I'm planning on doing the following: change air filter; replace spark plugs; change oil and oil filter; replace front and rear brake fluid; replace coolant; and, valve clearance check (I might have this one done by a mechanic). Is there an order in which you recommend I do them?

I see that you had to keep filling the reservoir after each ride, why not fill it up over the full line to start so that when it goes down it ends up at the full line? I have to take all the plastic off my bike to get to the radiator cap. do I have to fill the radiator after each ride or can I just keep adding to the reservoir till it stays at the full line? it takes a long time to get all the plastic off the 2005 model.

Noticed you didnt flush the engine with distilled water to clean it out the old coolant, but you did with the expansion tank ? any reason for this ?
wolfe1970 you can flush it with distilled water. Better yet flush, close the bolt, fill with distilled water, let the engine run until you see 3 temp bars. Then let the engine cool and drain, flush again. Once you see no colored liquid coming out you are done.

I have a question. Have you ever had a problem with speed indication or speedometer? Have you had other problems with this motorcycle (electric wires, etc.)? Regards
they require a tool to adjust it to run the correct numbers if the tire size is not original, or even some from new have this problem??

Nice video.
One thing very important. Take the coolant to a bottle right after draining. DO NOT leave it in the pan because dogs/cats may drink it fooled by its sweet smell. It would be LETHAL!

Yes it is an oil temp indicator which I use to know when I can push the engine (ie when the oil is at the right temp and flowing as should.) buy one louis.de but remember to get the one with the long sensor. I have an 08' vstrom I bought a few months ago. Should I replace the engine coolant? Isn't it like a car where the coolant last pretty much the entire life of the vehicle?
+Chris B. Read the manual. Get one of you don't have one. If it's blue coolant (extra long life) then change every four years or 29,000 miles. Green coolant every 10,000.
+ronleon62 I thought the coolant is like a car, goes for the life of the vehicle.
Unforetunately its not like that with vstroms. I can only say that others did not follow the manual and the cooling system got corroded with holes in the radiator hoses and elsewhere. I m not representing suzuki or anybody else nor I m writing things which are not accurate. Nevertheless the decision is always yours.
+Chris B. There is no coolant goes for the life of the vehicle. That is just poor vehicle maintenance. Pretty much all fluids in vehicles require to be replaced during the vehicles life cycle. Coolant systems in cars are no different. They should be replaced in cycles and the system should also be inspected for breaks in hoses etc.
Where do I get the rad
If you mean the radiator, and the 1st gen 650 vstroms, then the part number is 17710-27G00. Depending on where your location is you order from where you can get the best price. Either online or the dealer.

Επαναλαμβάνουμε την διαδικασία εξαέρωσης και ελπίζουμε;
ditodeejay Η διαδικασία θέλει μερικούς κύκλους λειτουργίας της μηχανής. Εγώ βάζω το ντεπόζιτο πρόχειρα με τις 3 βίδες (χωρις τα πλαστικα) κάνω μια βόλτα 5 λεπτά μέχρι να ανάψουν οι 3 γραμμές θερμοκρασίας κ μετά αφήνω την μηχανη να κρυώσει τελείως!. Θα δεις μετά ότι στο δοχείο το μικρό το πλαστικό έχει πέσει η στάθμη αρκετά. Συμπληρώνεις ως πάνω και επαναλαμβάνεις το ιδιο μέχρι τη στιγμη που με κρύο κινητήρα, σε ίσιο έδαφος και με ίσιο το τιμόνι η στάθμη του ψυκτικού υγρού στο μικρό δοχείο θα είναι σχεδόν στο Max. Τοτε ολος ο αερας θα εχει φυγει και στην θεση του θα εχουν μπει τα 1.9l. Όποτε εαν εφτάσες σε αυτό το σημείο που βαζουμε την σωστη ποσοτητα, βάζεις την βίδα μπροστά στο τιμόνι και τις 2 πίσω χωρίς πλαστικά κ κανείς αυτή τη διαδικασία.
@@DrVstrom Ευχαριστώ πολύ αλλά αυτά έχουν γίνει ήδη και έχω κάνει 50 χλμ σύνολο σε βόλτες. Το δοχείο χρειάστηκε γέμισμα μία ή δύο φορές. Τώρα είναι στο max, το ψυγείο γεμάτο αλλά έχω βάλει μόλις 1,6-1,7L.(H μηχανή είχε αδειάσει τελείως από παραφλού, όταν σταμάτησε η ροή από το σταντ την έφερα στα ίσια και όταν σταμάτησε και έτσι την χαμήλωσα τέρμα κάτω μέχρι να μην υπάρχει καθόλου ροή.)
Εβαλες ακριβως το ιδιο αντιψυκτικο με πριν? Ποσο καιρο εχεις την μηχανη και ποτε αλλαξες αντιψυκτικο τελευταια φορα πριν? Μπες στο fb να σου πω πιο γρηγορα
@@DrVstrom Ευχαριστώ πολύ για την απάντηση. Έβαλα άλλου τύπου αντιψυκτικό από ότι είχε αλλά αφού άδειασα το παλιό παλιό έκανα δύο κύκλους με απιονισμένο νερό και καθαριστικό ψυγείου για μότο της liqui moly, μετά ένα κύκλο με απιονισμένο νερό μόνο, άδειασα τελείως το κύκλωμα όπως είπα πιο πάνω και μετά έβαλα παραφλού(έβαλα motocool factory line oat κόκκινο και είχε μέσα ένα πράσινο από τον προηγούμενο ιδιοκτήτη,έχω 1 μήνα τη μότο, για αυτό και οι κύκλοι καθαρισμού ).
Δυστυχώς δεν μπορώ να μπω fb αυτή τη στιγμή.
Γνωρίζεις τι μπορεί να συμβαίνει ;

ditodeejay 2 πράγματα, η έχεις αέρα λίγο μέσα η έχει μείνει απιονισμενο. 1 Έκανες εξαέρωση στην αρχή με ανοιχτό το καπάκι του ψυγειου για 2 λεπτά δίνοντας ελαφρώς γκάζι? Επίσης τα κολάρα τα ζουλιξες με το χέρι να κυκλοφορήσουν οι φυσαλίδες? 2 Αλλιώς Δεν έχει βγει όλο το προηγούμενο απιονισμενο νερό. Εαν λοιπόν βλέπεις το 2 μπουκάλι Αντιψυκτικο κ σου δείχνει ότι δεν έβαλες 0.9l αυτα είναι το πιο πιθανα. Να θυμάσαι ότι το αριστερό κολάρο από τον συμπλέκτη κρατάει σχεδόν πάντα παραφλου μέσα.
Εαν έχεις τελειώσει με την διαδικασία άσε την μηχανη να δουλέψει κ να μπει το βεντιλατερ μια φορά, να εκκινήσει ο ανεμιστήρας δηλαδή. Μόλις σβήσει, σβήσε τον κινητήρα κ βάλε την μηχανη στο πλάγιο σταντ να κρυώσει τελείως. Την επόμενη μέρα δες την στάθμη αν έχει κατέβει. Αν κατέβει, συμπληρώνεις, αν όχι δεν πειράζει θα έχεις λίγο απιονισμενο μέσα. No big deal. Πες μου πως πήγε. Χαιρετώ

Στο manual γράφει μισό αντιψυκτικό μισό νερό. Χρησιμοποιείς κάποιο "ελαφρύτερο" αντιψυκτικό.
Χρησιμοποιώ premixed δηλαδή είναι ηδη μισο μισο απο την εταιρεια μες στο μπουκάλι

So to check coolant before a trip...I have to take the tank off the check the level? Surely this is not so?? 🤔🤷♂️🤷♂️ Or can I get to the reservoir without dismantling the bike’s tank and plastic?? 🤔🤔🤷♂️👎🏻
Pete G check by going to a shady place and use a flashlight from the left side of the bike while you observe the level from the right. To get to the coolant small reservoir you have to lift the tank partially and with a small tube and a funnel fill how you like. Next question

Pete G no you only take the seat off, get your eyes level to the reservoir level from the right side of the bike and check the green or blue coolant upper level on the white container.

Pete G no please note that you can only inspect without taking plastics out. If you wish to top up the reservoir, then you need to partially lift and put the fuel tank back side on the prop as shown on my video. Then with a rubber tube and small funnel you topup. For this you have to unclip the side plastics and i advise to follow the whole process. There are people just untightening the side plastic bolts to partially lift but then it’s very easy to scratch or brake plastic parts so I do not recommend. Simply follow my video and in this way it would be good to clean the air filter as well. By the way if your coolant is 2 years old you have to change it. Also never mix coolants. You have to top up with the same brand.

Δες μηπως χανει απο τον θερμοστατη που υπαρχει ενα θεμα με τις φλαντζες του. Δηλαδη φυσικα δεν εχω εικονα απο το προβλημα σου αλλα μερικες φορες χανει απο κει και κυλα στους σωληνες. Αν οντως θελει σωληνα τους αλλαζεις ετσι και αλιως στα 4 χρονια. Το υγρο στα 2, οποτε εαν τα εχει συμπληρωσει αλλαξε το και αυτο.
