I am amazed that Rita's Husband recorded this so well back in 1960 when theatre recording techniques were not what they have become today. This clip features a fresh young vibrant voice who was to become one of the best dramatic sopranos of the 20th century and a recognized leader in Wagner Opera.
One of the loveliest British sopranos. Great legacy of recordings especially Wagner. So glad to see that her works are being preserved by her daughter.
All Hail Our Lady of Limekiln Lane, the Walkure from Wallasey! This is an extraordinary performance, absolutely overflowing with confidence and showing all the hallmarks of the great Diva who was to come. The firmness of the sound is there, although its character is brighter (as noted by others' observations); also noticeable is the clarity of diction and her use of the language to propel the musical line. Beautifully coordinated with the orchestra in a chamber-music-like way, as befits this excerpt, this performance makes one wish for more of her Elsa. I will instead express my gratitude once again to Mairwyn, for curating and sharing these treasures, and to Mr. Thomas for his diligent efforts in preserving this most important career. Bravi all around, and thank you!
Miss Hunter could obviously sing way more than the heroic roles - she has that lyric ecstasy for Elsa, and colors her sound so that it communicates emotion.
What an emotional performance! 😍 The recording equipment’s proximity to the orchestra has made me aware (for the first time!) of the beauty of every single instrument in this aria, so much that it sounds like a duet for voice and orchestra 🥳

I think she fits pefect for the role.
Very beautiful 😍, do you know whereabouts in Wallasey she sang it 💘
I wish I knew...maybe that will turn up as I scan programs and stuff. Once I find out...I will tell you darling
Probably recorded in Wallasey Town Hall.
