Hey Connor...lots more influential crime than just the "mob" and just in NY. If you want, look up the history of the Aryan Brotherhood. Many of their original members were Irish (or of Irish decent) and were bikers back in the day. Some of the Peckerwood gangs in California (who are now actively running meth and are organized) were whites from Oklahoma who came to the West Coast during the Dust Bowl / famine in the Mid West. They were Scotish, Ulster Scots, Ulster Irish, Republic Irish and English. Just all sorts of our history is directly relayed back to the British Isles.

@Shane Molloy Yeah but what I'm saying is there are/were dozens of Irish gangsters. Even others in NYC and Philly that he would've been closer to , worth a mention. Go look up the Traitz brothers in Philly from the 80's to the 2000's (Traitz is probably actually German..) but they ran Ametuer and Youth boxing in Philly, Roofers Union, Meth ...and outside of the Traitz the rest were Irish or basically "white" gangsters.
In Philly underworld, you're either Italian, Polish or "Irish" which the Puerto Ricans and Italians called any other white dude that wasn't Italian...it was the default ethnic group, just because the number of Irish in Philly. So for every McLaren or Sullivan, you had a Schmidt, Jones, Martin or Krautz know what I mean?

I agree with John here. The Italians are more structured and setting up the Commission with the 5 New York families showed how smart they were. They were able to infiltrate just about every industry and became almost a second government.
Us Irish were never as structured for whatever reason in America. Possibly in the early days of the 1850's with the Irish street gangs but when the Italians set up the mafia it brought it to a different level.
Us Irish are a bit more volatile and impulsive. Never back down from a fight even.when vastly outnumbered.
The IRA here in Ireland were as structured and violent as any American Italian mob family but thankfully those bloody days are over a long time.
Thanks to John and his co host here for giving us a shout out on the eve of St Patrick's day.

I remember a guy coming over to the house with a small kid. My mom & I entertained him why they spoke. We lived a town over. Obviously a city guy. Many months later we were headed to my cousins graduation party up in Yonkers & this guy showed up again with a tough looking guy driving a Mercedes sedan. Just didn’t look right. When I told my hubby & what he knew of my now deceased father, he said that’s Jimmy Coonan. Great 🙏🏻

Jimmy Burke did not do Lufthansa heist after doing time for point shaving. Henry Hill flipped and gave up the BC scheme way way after Lufthansa That’s common knowledge.

Agree on Johns Comments. At least as Irish are concerned. Most Irish kids in that era. Grew up with a bunch of brothers (big families). When you grow up fighting tough older brothers you develop a lot less fear in a fight as you’ve been there before. I think it’s. Big factor Just a added point. Great interview. Wood side projects in the house!!

Jimmy the Gent, I worked for his best friend who he grew up with in Far Rockaway. I heard crazy stories about these 2 guys growing up in south Queens. There is a law and order episode about Jimmy Burke and another good friend of mine was in the episode, Burt Young. Burt Young has great stories too. He grew up in the life and changed his name to Burt Young when he became an actor.

He cooperated alright, and they laughed him off the stand in Jr's trial. The prosecutor even had to pull him to the side and warn him of being charged with perjury if he kept lying. 🤣

Nice rundown. People miss the point a lot of time when they talk about these guys. It was about family. (Not just a saying). Surprised though not to hear Jim's partner, Flemmi mentioned. Went to school with his sons. 70's-80's were a tough time in Boston and hangin out in Dot & Southie. Glad I got out when I did. But I miss Boston.

It was my understanding but obviously I could be wrong that the Italian mob would subcontract murders or similar important jobs to the Irish mob when they needed to distance themselves so to speak from a particular situation, any truth to that?

Every white American think their Irish, German or Italian. Iv come across Irish Americans called Smith, Jackson, Johnson, Washington, Carter 😂.
I don’t know how the Irish and Germans have managed to sell themselves so well.

Wow so dumb. Smith is an irish name. Its origin and roots are in every county in ireland. In america, there are literally 10 smiths i could name in the new york irish mafia from 1920s to present day. You really just reached that hard to justify your irish sounding name by claiming someone without an 'O" or "mc" in there last name isn't true irish. Im sure you know all about how america treated irish people after the famine. How irish had to change there irish sounding names to be able to enter america. So irish families dropped the "o & mc" in there name or used there profession as there last name to avoid abuse (blacksmiths = smiths) in the new world after being starved to death in there home land.
