I ordered this thing with the roller controller expansion. I actually got it for my small boy who never will get to experience arcades like we did growing up in the 80s-90s.
A lot of thought went into this mini arcade cabinet especially that rotational screen and all those other plug in controllers! Preordered it and can’t wait. I have the Sega unit and it’s pretty solid and the a few If the Neo Geo units and as much as the Neo Geo mini arcade gets knocked or criticized the “Christmas” edition is by far my favorite of the mini arcade cabinets, just my opinion but I haven’t given this a go yet
@@T0TALLYAWESOMEGUY Definitely the games selection especially the “Christmas” edition! The unit itself has a great overall feel to it and the screen is fantastic. The negatives are primarily the “filter” or scaler used when connected to a monitor which makes the picture sort of “blurry”. It’s true but IMO mostly noticed on the larger screens. The MVS & AES typically didn’t run on the large screens we have today and if you ever connected an AES to a large HD monitor you’ll sort of have the same results when using it’s standard AV cable. Also, the controller & buttons don’t have the micro switches like the original NeoGeo AES/MVS products. I have the NeoGeo AES and MVS OG controllers and my personal opinion is that it’s not an issue as far as playability. Mostly an enthusiast thing and I get that point. Sorry so long
Beautiful device, and the attention to detail is insane - from the rotatable screen, to the 4-way/8-way switch on the arcade stick, to the awesome little trackball + spinner controller, microswitch joystick, this is superb from Taito. Really want that mini trackball + spinner controller for my PC, and also my Mister IF support for it is added to Mister, as it's not working properly yet, according to a few that have tried.
I was crazy enough to gamble a bit and ordered 2 paddle controller and Yes! It works! You can play Arkanoid Returns, Puchi Carat and Plump Pop with two players simultaneously. Wished they would support 4 players in Growl/Runark, though.
Pretty excited for this! Just got my controllers yesterday. The console itself should be arriving in a few more days for me. The screen rotation mech looks and sounds nice and chunky in a good way! Hoping to see if we can get the trackball controller to work on PC/Pi/Android down the road. The joystick has some nice weight to it. I wish the trackball itself had a little more weight so that it could spin with a little more inertia. The spinner feels great IMO. Was surprised to se a full-size SD card. for some reason I was expecting it to be MicroSD.
Guessing you bought from Amazon Japan? I’m in the same boat - ordered the pad, trackball and cabinet separately as it worked out cheaper (didn’t want the joystick) and they shipped the controllers before the cabinet! Hopefully it will arrive over the weekend, or Monday.
@@cawleygamma yes. Same thing here. Seems a shame to have to switch between SD games and the main ones at boot. But.... That does sound potentially promising from the modding standpoint. Also impressed to see video snaps. Don't think the other mini's do that. Did the Astro City mini have video snaps for the games? Been a while since I played mine and don't remember?
Nice!!!! Decals!!! And it’s bigger!! I had no clue it was going to be bigger from Astro city. Now I with I would have ordered everything at once. I wasn’t sure about the extras. Hell mother efing yeah!!
These mini arcade setups are super rad! Definitely appreciate your review as it's probably the only time I'll see one. Please show those shoot em ups! As always, here for the thumb-butt.
I can’t wait for my stuff from Japan. I ordered separate packages also. I didn’t bother with the d-pad controllers since the Astro City pads work with it and I’m glad I didn’t because it sounds like those are much better anyway!
that spinner and trackball are selling point to me. regardless of limited game choice it is really hard to experience the original spinner of Arkanoid. I wish someone hack this controller to work with MAME or any other emulator.
We started out small with Neogeo Mini, then medium with Astro City Mini, and now big with the Egret II Mini. Next we'll get Mini XL in original size, followed by Mini Super XL actually twice the size.
A few things I noticed related to the trackball accessory (unless I’m missing something): 1. If the SD card is pushed in, it force loads to the 10 trackball games. To get to the main (40) games, you have to pop out the SD card and reset the device (and there’s nowhere else to store the SD card when not in use). 2. Alternating 2-player games (such as Arkanoid or Strike Bowling) require you to unplug and replug in the trackball controller between the 1-player and 2-player USB ports. Other than this (which I’m hoping can be fixed via a firmware update), I absolutely love this thing! Looking forward to your thoughts in the deeper dive video.
Can you try plugging the Trackball/Spinner controller into a windows computer and see what the button/trackball/spinner do? Does it control your mouse on windows PC or something?
Hi, thanks for the video, the thing I d like to see you try is to play MAME on PC using the trackball and rotary controller to see if it is ok to play other games requiring these types of controllers on emulators (SegaSonic the Hedgehog with the trackball for example).
The Astro City mini gamepads work on the Egret 2 mini. They are the only other gamepads that work on it besides its own pads. It's clealry made by the same people who made the Astro City mini. Mine should arrive next week 😁.
The Sega Astro City controller works on the Taito Egret II on the UA-cam channel Retro Core tried other controllers but only the Sega Astro City controller worked.

Looks good! I'm waiting on the blue version, but I'm glad to see the trackball controller is so big. It looked small in previews. The fact that it looks well built is great as well. Looking forward to seeing more :)
Im wondering if the track ball controller would work on PC. It would be great for those style of games on retroarch or retropie. Arkanoid is always played best with a special controller.
The trackball shows up as mouse input (though it doesn't seem to actually move the cursor on Windows when I tested it), and the paddle acts as mouse wheel. Buttons are mapped a bit oddly.
Can you test if the Arcade stick works on the Astro City? I saw someone test the Sega Astro city pad on the Egret and it worked perfect, but they didn't get any of the Taito pads or stick to be able to test the other way around. Thank you!
Thanks for the review! Now I am interested, but it is a tad expensive, maybe it will go down like the Astrocity (got it for about $70 a few weeks ago, waiting for delivery from JPN)
Wow, looks awesome! I was wondering if you could plug the trackball/spinner controller into a Pi, EmuELEC box or PC and see if you can play Arkanoid with MAME using that. Would be epic if that worked! Then I'd probably have to pick up that controller!
I gotta tell ya, I have not been into these mini retro arcade machines. But when I saw that screen pop out and rotate it was so ill it made me want one just off of that.
pretty clever how they have the dial and trackball regulated to a separate controller so it does not get in the way of the core unit, while still making all the functionality very streamlined. With any review like this where I find the controllers interesting, I always wonder if the controllers would also work on a Raspberry Pi. I think that extra controller with the track ball and spinner looks cool. I might but this mini arcade just because of that!

I’m interested in the plug in arcade stick, wonder if it works for anything else, looks like a small stick for on the go, hopefully works on other systems, at least pc maybe
I like that it is a mini Japanese arcade, that is really cool to me, but when it comes to small arcade looking devices, that's been a thing since the '80s, believe it or not, this is thing, that's very similar to this arcade, but it was a digital camera slash phone..
As a SEGA fan this is frustrating to see the Astro City V will still be obsolete many months after this Egret II mini releases... The size, the shape, inputs, outputs, features... Everything is better. I do like the crappy sound coming out of the Egret II, I guess it sounds the same as the original ? Do you own the Astro City Game center stand ? It seems like it fits underneath this Egret II.
Thanks a lot for the unboxing & review! Have you tested if Astro city arcade stick is compatible with Taito Egret II mini? I suppose it should work, as the astro city mini controller (or the 6 buttons japanese mega drive mini controller)! Can't wait for my bundle to arrive! Screen rotation, the paddle and the switch between 4 way or 8 way lever are amazing!
I hope you can use the SD card slot to add your own arcade roms. If not, then there is a possibility that Taito could release a firmware update for the Egret II Mini that can be installed through the SD card slot.
🕹️🕹️ Yoooooo, so excited to see the trackball and spinner. PLEASE test that controller on a Super Console X maybe and play Akari Warriors type games that requires the player to spin around while running to shoot 360°. Try the 4way to play Pac Man and Donkey Kong. Thanks Homie Pixel 🎮🎮🎮
Have you tried other USB controllers on this guy? Like our own arcade sticks, 8bitDo gamepads and arcade sticks, etc? Do they work? And do those Egret II controllers work on PCs/Macs?
I managed to get the complete package for the same price as the SLG version. When I first pre-ordered on Amazon Japan they wanted to charge me 20.000 Yen shipping. Then I checked again before release and shipping was down to 6.000 Yen! So I canceled and ordered again. At the end I paid 450 EUR instead of 600 EUR!
The trackball and spinner controller is the only plug-and-play solution I've seen around. How does it work with MAME, RetroPi, MiSTer, etc? And can you use it with Atari 2600 spinner games as well? I'm also curious about that SD-card. Can you put it into a computer and use those games with MAME for instance?
So awesome I love this I didn’t order mine cause someone said online they are gunna sell them in America with free shipping did you hear that at all Ron? I think it’s was limited run games. Can you do a full review on the arcade stick and bean controller and also plug them into ur pc and try them with steam fighting games?
Hey man, awesome video! Did you tried the Egret controller and arcade stick on the Astro city mini? Hould be cool if they worked on both arcade machines..
That looks great, I had to cancel my order as I moved my money to my PC build and Steamdeck but hopefully I can pick one up later. I am curious to know how well those controllers work on PC, particularly the trackball and if it's worth getting one for MAME
I really want to get this, but even with the international release, including the controller, and the paddle for the extra games, combined with postage and other fees its pretty expensive! (I normally never buy new consoles or games at full retail because that's very pricy) But I do like the look of this, so I'm possibly going to try and order the bits individually, but that's hoping they'll stay in stock long enough for me to get a chance!
Can't believe I'm only just now getting wind of this thing. Hope this won't be the last mini cabinet of this sort we see, because they seem to keep getting better and better. Everyone should especially take note of the rotating screen, the track ball and the overall more player friendly size (I mean, just because it's "mini" doesn't mean it should have to be awkward). ...but that game at the end of the video raises a question, and the thing is, it has absolutely nothing to do with the device: Is that the inspiration for the Special Stage in the first Sonic game?
that is one sexy micro arcade. Question: What's the sd card from the trackball controller look like on the pc? because my IMMEDIATE thought seeing that is that there's probably a pretty simple way to use that port to softmod.
Nice dude. Thanks to you hyping this months ago i caved and got the Special Ori bundle. Pretty dam expensive. But now im in Amazon Japan's system and may look at that more often for other things. Im a Taito Fan and hope they expand on this more with SD Card releases. I preordered a month ago and at first Amazon JP was new to my bank so a fraud alert slowed its shipping by a day. Should have it next week though. How did you Aquire this so quickly?
Good review. It's always hard for me to tell how quiet a thing is on these videos. Any idea if you can use other sticks on it or if you can use that stick on other things?
I get that only the Sega astro mini pad works with it, but how about the other way around for the arcade stick? Does the arcade stick with anything? I assume PC?
*Forgot to point out that not just the extra arcade stick has the 4 & 8 way switch but the Mini Arcade has the same switch underneath. Each game will show you which option to use.

Thanks.
Try Rastan Saga, that would be amazing to see!
I want one. But I don't wanna pay PS5/Xbox SX prices.
Looks great but it doesn’t have most of my favorite Taito games.
I live vicariously through you 😆 so I don’t have to buy these. Great unboxing.
Any compatibility with Astro Mini? As in the Astro arcade fight stick works with this one or vice versa.
I hope so, it's too expensive on Strictly Limited
If you could test the 8bitdo arcade stick? Works on the Astro city mini but only with the mayflash stick.
Hey man, awesome video! Did you tried the Egret controller and arcade stick on the Astro city mini? Hould be cool if they worked on both arcade machines..
Oh man, I wonder if that spinner controller could work on a PC for Tempest.
Yeah this looks cool but not THAT cool.
Can't believe I'm only just now getting wind of this thing. Hope this won't be the last mini cabinet of this sort we see, because they seem to keep getting better and better. Everyone should especially take note of the rotating screen, the track ball and the overall more player friendly size (I mean, just because it's "mini" doesn't mean it should have to be awkward).
...but that game at the end of the video raises a question, and the thing is, it has absolutely nothing to do with the device:
Is that the inspiration for the Special Stage in the first Sonic game?
Dude this thing looks really nice but I wouldn’t even have a place to put it. But damn I would absolutely love it if I had it.
The thing that really sell it the Rotary screen, otherwise It would be like all the other stuff of this kind
Try Puzzle Bobble 2X on Egret II Mini.
that is one sexy micro arcade.
“There ain’t no camels in this game” :)
I get that only the Sega astro mini pad works with it, but how about the other way around for the arcade stick? Does the arcade stick with anything? I assume PC?
can you get trackball and spinner work with pc mame ( even if adapter is needed)
