This version is SO much better! I hate being one of those "I liked your old stuff better than your new stuff" people but... damnt. *grumblrgrumblrgrumble*
This was the first version I heard way back in 2010. I was going through an emotional metamorphosis of sorts(I also love the newer version, but this one is much more raw), when I'd listen to it. Id think of a gloomy, rainy day in a dank studio apartment in NYC, playing this on a piano. Amazing how time flies.
first, i thought Delilah was the one regina's portraying but i realized, the one singing is Delilah's servant whom loved Samson first before Delilah, and she's the real one who cut Samson's hair because Delilah ordered her for she can't cut it herself. unfortunately, her love for Samson is not noticed and her name is unknown.
Wow, you nailed it! Can't believe I never figured this out, as I've been trying to get to the meaning of "The bible didn't mention us. Not even once" forever. Just when I thought I couldn't love this song anymore!
nah, in an interview, Regina said that it was all just metaphor. The song was abt her "Samson" who suffered cancer, that's the reason of the hair loss. "he ate a slice of wonder bread" - medicines that "Samson" is taking "I cut his hair myself one night" - she decided to cut/stop the apparatus keeping him alive "we couldn't bring the colums down" - they could not fight the cancer together Regina is such a genius to have used Samson in the bible as the metaphor or basis for this whole song. Its so deep
I forgot about this song, and after something like 12 years, today I remembered it again. and this version was the only one I knew, I think I put the very same video into the UA-cam converter as I remember the red lettering. Im so so glad I found it!
I love this version so much more than whats in spotify. The slowed, well enunciated words conveyed a million feelings more than what they simply meant. You could vividly see the story, the regret, the heartache of the storyteller. It painted another side of the story. What if Samson knew and forgave Delilah afterall while quietly accepting his fate as he held her close asking her to come to bed and that everything will be alright. The lines uttered by him "You are my sweetest downfall" is soo complex, the twisted kind of love that fades into sorrow. This song was just a masterpiece beyond its time.
I always imagined that the line "and the Bible didn't mention us" was her wish, that they never had the falling out and she was able to just be with him, no big story worthy of being in a holy book, just two people in love. I think it's beautiful. Also this version is my favorite ❤
I found when I listened to this song, I thought of CSI: New York, but I couldn't figure out why... so, I looked it up and I found out it was in the exact episode I'd been thinking of. So glad I found it.
This version is a good example of what the difference between a good vocal performance and what a perfect one is.... but she definitely was a million times better than I am even way back then...
You are my sweetest downfall I loved you first, I loved you first Beneath the sheets of paper lies my truth I have to go, I have to go Your hair was long when we first met Samson went back to bed Not much hair left on his head He ate a slice of Wonder Bread And went right back to bed And the history books forgot about us And the Bible didn't mention us And the Bible didn't mention us, not even once You are my sweetest downfall I loved you first, I loved you first Beneath the stars came fallin' on our heads But they're just old light, they're just old light Your hair was long when we first met Samson came to my bed Told me that my hair was red Told me I was beautiful And came into my bed Oh, I cut his hair myself one night A pair of dull scissors in the yellow light And he told me that I'd done alright And kissed me 'til the mornin' light, the mornin' light And he kissed me 'til the mornin' light Samson went back to bed Not much hair left on his head He ate a slice of Wonder Bread And went right back to bed Oh, we couldn't bring the columns down Yeah, we couldn't destroy a single one And the history books forgot about us And the Bible didn't mention us, not even once You are my sweetest downfall I loved you first
I really want to do my dance solo to this song, but I can't find this version on itunes. Could you pretty please send me the link to the mp3? Thank you!
this version was on her second album songs, it is slower and In my opinion more passionate and much more regina :) I enjoy them both but like this one more

This is my favorite version. Still listening 10 years later.
This version is superior by a considerable margin. Just beautiful.
I love this version so much more than the others. This is more romantic and slow, the way I like.
Can it be found on Spotify?
no, it is not on it :(
@@williamprusinowski9060 I came here to ask the same! It’s so frustrating cos I don’t like the other version at all

Agreed. This version is so achingly beautiful; it always makes me think of my first relationship.
This version is SO much better!

It definitely sounds more raw and emotional without as much production. The slower tempo adds to it as well. I agree

I was gonna ask why wonder bread was mentioned though. I'm pretty sure it's a metaphor for current situation

Little known fact: This song along with the rest of the album was recorded in one take on one day.
cain mccall that doesn’t surprise me at all, but that is absolutely amazing and unheard of
I’m not surprised. I’m pretty sure the Soviet Kitsch version of Chemo Limo was also done in one take
I like this one more, feels more raw. Regi did good as always! :)
This version is the reason I fell in love with her music 11 yrs ago😊
This song is Forever in my heart ❤️

You are my sweetest downfall
I loved you first, I loved you first
Beneath the sheets of paper lies my truth
I have to go, I have to go
Your hair was long when we first met
Samson went back to bed
Not much hair left on his head
He ate a slice of Wonder Bread
And went right back to bed
And the history books forgot about us
And the Bible didn't mention us
And the Bible didn't mention us, not even once
You are my sweetest downfall
I loved you first, I loved you first
Beneath the stars came fallin' on our heads
But they're just old light, they're just old light
Your hair was long when we first met
Samson came to my bed
Told me that my hair was red
Told me I was beautiful
And came into my bed
Oh, I cut his hair myself one night
A pair of dull scissors in the yellow light
And he told me that I'd done alright
And kissed me 'til the mornin' light, the mornin' light
And he kissed me 'til the mornin' light
Samson went back to bed
Not much hair left on his head
He ate a slice of Wonder Bread
And went right back to bed
Oh, we couldn't bring the columns down
Yeah, we couldn't destroy a single one
And the history books forgot about us
And the Bible didn't mention us, not even once
You are my sweetest downfall
I loved you first
this is the better version
Thank you so much!
