      I've been doing keg ohp but recently heard that the excessive lean may cause problems, whats your take? Not a competitor. I like doing them and every time I improve I add more water and the instability should help for real world ' functional' strength.
      Besides atlas stones and hot girls what else could be used for shouldering(diy)?

    You have touched on it in a couple of videos recently, but a full video on CNS issues would be good, e.g. what is CNS fatigue / burnout it, what causes it most rapidly, how to recognize it, how to work through or around it, etc. It's a constant balancing act when you move awkward implements.

    Strongman training for firefighting! I want to start training my fellow firehouse family strongman, but a lot of them are trying to make excuses that they’re not strong and can’t lift.... say a keg. I tell them, it doesn’t have to be full and you don’t have to start off so strong, but you do have to start to make progress. Although I’m super passionate about strongman training, I don’t want to push it on others.

    • @glamorak
      @glamorak 6 років тому +2

      Greg McCandless I have also attempting to implement some strongman training into my Firehouse with some small success. I suggest starting with a yoke, since it can be used as a squat rack also, it's an easy sell to the brass. If it's in the firehouse, guys might try it out. Sandbags and axle bars are pretty approachable as well. So are sleds and tires. From there you might be able to get more guys interested

    • @gregmccandless755
      @gregmccandless755 6 років тому

      glamorak thanks man! I have a couple implements myself. I’m gonna bring them to the firehouse and see what happens! I think I’ll be able to get some people interested in it. Some of the guys come to my backyard from time to time to train with me.

    Since following you, adding giant sets and conditioning with every workout I’ve dropped about 22-25 pounds and not a single lift has suffered. Granted I haven’t PRd in a while but my conditioning is immensely better and my BF% (according to my scale) is much lower. Currently in phase two of the power builder program and could not be happier with what I’m seeing

    Hey Brian i had the same issue. Caused by doing rear delt flys on an incline bench with my forehead on the bench. I suffered an injury to the brachial plexsus nerve cluster. I lost 90% of my strength in my left tricep, pec, and wrist. Went from benching 270lb to barely being able to bench 100lbs once. Major set back cause i had worked my ass off making the gains i did in strength. I hooked up with a chiropractor that specialized in sports medicine and followed his directions. I was off the weight pile for 8 months. Im still suffering from weakness on the left side but making improvements. Apparently it takes a long time to heal from a brachial plexsus injury because the nerves need to heal and regenerate. Im now working thru the "weakness" building the strength back. Bench is up to 235lb and my goal is still 300+. Deadlift is 315x2, bent over row is up to 230x1, and squat is 240x1. Anyway i would highly recommend seeing a chiropractor.

    Dude, check out your subscapularis and upper trap on your left shoulder. Have your physical therapy friend check them out for you to see if they are tight. If my assumption is correct they are tight because when you tore your supraspinatus those other muscles tightened to create stability in the shoulder.

    Love your content, positive actitude and mentality for lifting Brian, but I have to disagree with the imbalance question. Baseball players DO get imbalances from their sport, same as tennis players do (know this cause I've trained several of them), and even though the mixed grip on deadlifts has much lower impact in developing imbalances as rotating and hitting a ball always on the same side, it does cause imbalances when pulling in a lot of people. Either core imbalances since you tend to rotate your torso a little bit due to the external/internal position of the shoulders, but also in the traps and even biceps, and although this can be adress with a Hook Grip (which is the best option for most people in my opinion), proper accesory work like rows and pull ups will definetly minimize the imbalance of the mixed grip. Keep it up man!

    I thought in one of your older (like more than a year older) videos you said you are ambidextrous? I've heard most people aren't comfortable supinating their non-dominant hand, so they have all sorts of issues with the mixed grip. Anyway, can't wait to see the Juji video that you've been teasing on Instagram.

    • @MrJosh6889
      @MrJosh6889 6 років тому

      Strangely, your non-dominant hand tends to have the stronger grip. I supinated my dominant hand on mixed grip deadlifts for a long time, and it actually led to bicep tendon issues in my pronated hand. So I'd say if you insist on mixed grip, at least alternate it. Otherwise, know you're taking a risk.
      My bicep tendon issues are resolved now, but since I don't compete I just use straps. If I intended on competing in the future, I would start using hook grip though.

      also, if you write programs for pro fighters, think you could give me a quick tip? i dont needa program, i can write thosemyself, i jsut need some intros to strongman type training. for example, if a person cant afford a gym, or his own gear, and is currently getting by on calisthenics, what would you recommend? i know its all about moving realistic objects, so where would you recommend i search for objects to move, and what weight/motions should i start with as a beginner to this type of training. calisthenics isnt all that great for your posterior chain developement unless you add weight, and I think its about to start causing some issues if i dont figure it out. skill training is all right for it, but if you need to add size, which i do, a planche isnt going to get you there. it doesnt help that im highly limb dominant.

      If you're handy you can rig up a lot of your own implements. Lots of DIY plans online and shit. Atlas stones are fairly cheap to make, just need the concrete and a mold. If you have some farms or heavy equipment shops nearby you can go and see if they have any big tires around, often they will give them to you for free to dodge the recycling cost. You can get a lot done with just a tire, flip it, deadlift it, carry it, hit it with a hammer for time, etc. If your main concern is posterior chain development you can't beat a big ass tire for versatility/cost.

      I’ve been there a lot at work I found if you are always looking to busy to talk or if they start talking to you I give them a minute and then say man I got so much to do I got to get back to work. Over time they will stop complaining to you because you don’t engage their negativity. Negative attracts negative trust me they will find someone else who is negative. Commercial gyms I found headphones and a focus attitude will keep people away!!!

    • @japphan
      @japphan 6 років тому +2

      If you have the energy, and want to be a really good friend, and these negative people are not stupidly stubborn, you can actually try to help them dream.
      They do not believe in you, because they don't believe that they would be able to do what you are trying to do, and that is holding them back in their lives.
      Otherwhise, you can always try to use their negativity as fuel. Show'em!
      I have also found it useful to have a laid back, humourous attitude when facing this type of negativity. Saying stuff like "I could dream about losing 5lbs and bench 5lbs more in 2 years, but that wouldn't be much of a dream, would it?".
      There is also the option of being rude, which might be the best in some cases. If someone is trying to put you down, they kinda deserve to be dismissed.

I'm getting back to lifting after a serious injury and like you with having a broken back (or two for you based on your videos) did you just start lifting the big 3 and light weights or did you do a bunch of "general physical preparedness stuff?" Or both? My conditioning is shot post/during rehab so I think I might do a boatload of complexes with a linear progression style build over 6 weeks or so just to get reacclimated to the bar before normal training. What did you do to get your performance back? Thanks.

    Hi Brian, just wondering what's your opinion on swapping all of my standard barbell lifts to an axle bar? Any disadvantages? Seems like a good idea for grip.

    Hey I started lifting a few months ago and I'm having a great time but recently I got a new job and it's pretty physically demanding, how would you recommend I change my training routine if at all?

    Just read an article in New York Times Magazine called “ What was causing a healthy older man to be nauseated by food?”. It made me think of your situation... maybe it it could have some useful information for you??

    I’m a nurse and people constantly tell me how hard it is on the body, especially on the low back. Seeing that you used to be in a job that is hard on the body, how would you suggest I focus on in my training/recovery to combat that?

      There's been some studies that suggest low back pain is often a product of low back fatigue. In my opinion, the best way to counter that is to just train low back. Hyperextensions, deadlifts, stuff like that.
      Before I started getting into powerlifting I was doing a lot of driving and dealt with a lot of low back pain. I couldn't tell you the last time I remember feeling it.

      MrJay6889 I like that line of thinking. It’s harder to injure a strong muscle group.

    Aren't your bench presses in the video 90 pounds heavier than you have listed? I bought two 20 pound farmers handles from amazon at the end of last year and I got 4 50 pound plate boxes the first two months of this year and two more different kind of 50 pound plate boxes and two times I got two 5 pound plates from Dick's Sporting goods and earlier this week I got 4 2.5 pound plates and last month I got two Olympic dumbbell handles. Now I can make many kinds of weights from 10 pounds to at least two 130 pounders. I used all those plates plus my backpack a few days ago to pick up 500 something pounds. The heaviest non gym lift I have ever done. But I'm nowhere near Brian Alsruhe strong.

    im actually super curious as to the videos in which you were too "mean". i think that most of the time people need to hear the honest "mean" truth, because otherwise they will keep giving themselves the outs that dont serve them in the long run.

    I dig the new T-shirt and was going to buy one until I noticed the quote on the back was from Rage Against the Machine. Considering your background and support, I’m surprised you went with an anti-cop; cop killer supporting group like them... Next one I guess....
