This is just one approach to inking that I'll be sharing. Cross-hatchling is not the technical term but CROSS-HATCHING is. :)

beautiful work! I want to start inking my line art, and this looks like a great place to come and research a little - thanks for the video!
You're welcome. But like Alice in Wonderland...you may fall down a deeper rabbit hole than you planned. #yerwelcome :D
Shane, great line work. I love it. So much I can learn from just watching.
Great, I'm glad.
Awesome videos!
Oh wow. Squinting is such an interesting idea when crosshatching. Thank you!
You're welcome!
Love this video. Hope to one day see you post a video like you mention in this one at 11:25 where you render without an outline and render more like a realistic painting with this nib. I think that would be super interesting to see : ) Love your art and thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us!!
Thanks. I actually have a piece ready to go...so hold tight!
It's always good to see other artists who rotate their paper when they draw 🍻
Dude, your voice is amazing, just like your art :)
Hahaha...thanks, man. Too kind. :)
oh man, that voice-over is really cool ! Reminds me of Claptrap in Borderlands. Your tips are really good too, I'm getting started with inking but it's a complicated medium to master ^^
You'll get there with daily practice.
Is it necessary to add cross hatching on drawing that dont have cross hatching
Not if it's that kind of illustration. Usually when you are doing a piece to be cross-hatched it can be helpful to layout the rhythm and direction of the lines in pencil so you can be efficient and create the best possible result. Or if you want you can shade it like you would to show volumes, do a pass over it with a kneaded eraser to pick up excess graphite and then ink however you like following the value structure you've created.
Not all inking is cross-hatching. Look at the works of James Montgomery Flagg who uses several approaches to creating line just in one piece. You certainly have a lot of options available.
Not that long ago, the great Bernie Wrightson.
Any book recommendation to learn these type of cross hatching illustration

Hey Shane where did you get the ink well?
Boy, that's a good question. Got it a long time ago here in Seattle. Most likely Artist and Craftsman Supply.
Shane, what paper are you putting through the printer and inking on?
For these, Del, I was using a 90# paper called Conqueror. But typically, I'll put Strathmore 500 series 2 ply smooth bristol through my Epson Stylus 2200.
@@BeyondTheProcess Thanks
I tried cross hatching a few times now and I always gave up half way through because its a really tedious task if you do it without a break. But I really like the end result, that's why I keep trying on this technique. Any advice to make it more interesting to cross hatch?
Look at it like meditation and know you don't have to finish it in one sitting. This is one of those things where the time you put in can really make a difference in the final piece. Besides, there are variations on cross-hatching that you can research to make it more fun. Using all curves for instance. Good luck.
Fantastic work ! Out of interest, how long did it take you ?
Probably an hour or so. It's always hard to parse out, especially when I'm filming.
@@BeyondTheProcess Thanks for that, I understand. That's incredible, inking always takes me ages !
what pen are you using?
Hunt 102.
Is it a need to have a dip pen?
Not necessarily. It does make it easier to get varying stroke weights and it's stiff enough to keep a consistent line. It also depends on how large you work. You could work larger and with great brush control, come up with the same effect. James Montgomery Flagg worked very large with a similar technique.
What is that awesome background music?
I don't really know. I found it on a free music site. Got pretty darn lucky.
Love and rockets
Great band! Cool comic!
Hunt 102 is like a soft maru?
Yeah, probably. Though those tend to be a little stiffer because of the different metal. Worth a try.
Does anyone else get an uneasy feeling listening to the music in this video?
:)
Its like someone is watching you. Lol, I get that when the lady talks.
is that a candlestick holder you have your ink in? :0 also, spectacular Drawing! 😍
No...it's actually a bottle cap taped to the bottom of a Japanese porcelain soy sauce dish. :) #high-tech BTW thanks.
Shane Patrick White Ah, gotcha! lol That's a pretty cool idea!
I'm super new at this inking , but it seems to me your going a little overboard with the amount of crosshatching . . . a little goes a long way is generally how I approach Art. Too much of it and it draws the eyes away from the main subject. What do you think, l like to hear from you.
You have a good point. It many cases that is true. We want to direct the eye to where we want the viewer to look. Study the early pen & ink illustrators and you'll see a wide range of techniques and approaches to cross-hatching. Some are more effective than others.I'm certainly no master at it like they were, but I understand the basics enough to get by.
Please do something with ink and shadows on human body.
Okay...I'll add that to the list. Thanks for watching.
Background music is horrendous! Lesson's really good!👍🏽👍🏽
Great tutorial, but I find the music painfully annoying :-)
I do try to do the best I can with these things. Copyright free music is hard to come by. If I actually made any money doing these videos, I might have a music budget. But as it is I don't.
Perhaps try watching my videos without sound.
Thanks for watching.
@@BeyondTheProcess I understand, thanks again Shane :-)
Bahsettiğin sorunu tam anlayamadım. (ne awkward bi iletişim şeklidir bu yea)
@@naked-ruby Gitmiş bulmuş videoyu ya. Kim şimdi sevimli? :)
