It’s a never-ending battle: taxi operators versus motorists. Now, in some parts of Gauteng, taxi associations are shifting gears and redirecting their anger at motorists who share rides with their colleagues, friends or family. As they battle to maintain an iron grip on the public transport market, taxi operators say that carpooling and lift clubs are impacting their bottom line, robbing them of potential clients. And, as the threats escalate, all motorists with more than one passenger in their vehicle could become targets.

The gov gave power to taxi mafia to retain power... not so easy to get it back. The rest of the world building superb public transit systems (check out Curitiba's (Brazil) excellent BRT system), while SA regresses into lawlessness & mayhem.
Public transit takes decades to complete, the later we start the more difficult to undertake. SA cities falling further & further behind global best practice standards.

Uber eats on their bikes are the worst! I almost got hit by one as I was crossing the rode on a green pedestrian light. The other day I witnessed a mother with her two children got hit by an Uber whom turned on a red robot while the lady’s robot was green, and this specific Uber eats biker had no license on his person or a proof insurance.

My daughter and her co workers were stopped in Conubia Durban by a taxi driver. The Taxi driver accused the driver of the car of taking away their business. The driver (a white person) told the taxi driver that the people in the car were family but he pointed to my daughter and the other person( black female) and said they could not be his family. The driver of the car accelerated and got away. The ordeal has traumatised my daughter who hasn't worked since then (2019)

Taxi owners do not consider themselves business men or women. If they did that would entail formalizing and legitimizing their business (Admin, tax, standards, reporting bad driving, fines for non compliance) and actually competing and offering their customers a great service like any other business. Instead what you have are mobs masquerading as entrepreneurs. These are the kinds of people who hold back the countries development.

It's been 30 years hey and we don't have proper public transport networks in our cities. In fact, we've done backwards and destroyed what little we had. If the Taxi Mafia is so afraid of Uber, build proper integrated mixed use public transport infrastructure that completely destroys their business. South Africans are tired of being ruled over my mafioso. Almost every other major country has public transport infrastructure. Cars are way too expensive here relative to income levels.

As long as registered owners are not held liable for the conduct of nameless and faceless drivers of their vehicles, this will not end. Every person has the freedom to choose who they wish to contract with, including fare paying passengers. This lawlessness has permeated every sphere of life and the authorities are either complicit or simply look the other way.
