JRPG Jungle same here. I knew nothing of fairy tail but got the game because I like Gust and turn based jrpgs. I found the game to be a good rpg and even got the platinum.
@@johnmedeiros3763 no problem 👍 I use to be the same way but now it's not that big of a deal to me but I do wish we got more games with a English dub since it would help to sell the game to more people.
I platinumed the game recently and had so much fun! I've watched the entire anime and read the manga too so my opinion my be a bit biased. I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of effort was put into some of the animations for the attacks/spells and it was so fun to see them in video game form. One little nitpick I had was that the character portraits never changed during dialogue. I wished they could have thrown in some happy/mad/crying faces to match the dialogue. Gust for stayed pretty true to the source material and had Hiro Mashima help with the development! I'm happy it got you interested in the anime/manga!
I came into this game, not knowing anything about the manga or anime. There were a lot of aspects of the game that I enjoyed. The characters are pretty hilarious and just overall, very goofy. I also liked the art direction overall. Like you, the game has garnered enough interests within me, to go and seek out the manga, which I am enjoying. The most disappointing aspect of the game, was that I felt there were a lot of neat systems in place for battling, however the game wasn't challenging enough to push you to use those systems. I tried to switch the game to hard mode, but again all it did was make the enemies have more hit points and only lengthened the battles instead of encouraging me to use the more intricate battle mechanics. I also would have liked the world to be fleshed out a bit more. Each zone, felt very small and lacked depth. Overall, the game was entertaining enough for me to put close to 10 hours in... but it didn't hook me enough to keep me focused to play until the end. It's the sort of game, that is good for just a chill session of gaming where you need some dopamine release by seeing stats and numbers increase. Worth playing... but definitely wait for a sale.
Thank you for reviewing this game. I have seen very few reviews for it, aside from Steam reviews. I will probably get it when there is a Steam sale. I have been watching your reviews for a while now, and they are fantastic. Keep up the good work. If you are looking for some other JRGS to play, I recommend checking out some of the other Ys games. I just finished Ys Origin and it was really good, and not too long.
Even with some flaws and odd design decisions, I really wish more anime games got this kind of love and effort. I'll definitely pick this one up sometime!
Just finished the game. I had never watched or read fairy tail beforehand but decided to pick it up because I am a fan of atelier and, to a lesser extent, blue reflection. I actually made my way through the entire anime after buying but before starting the game since that seemed to be the better way to experience the actual story but I had a lot of fun with the game afterwards, even if I was disappointed in, though not surprised by, the lack of an English dub.
One thing I really enjoyed about this review was that is was from the perspective of someone who hasn't watched much of the show yet you gave it a chance and still liked the game. I'm at a odd place with the game in terms of the story; I'm a fan of the show but I dropped off from the series and where the game starts that's where I roughly stopped watching. So in terms of the arcs in the game I can't say what's been taken out, but I can also say that if feels that way. Still the combat is fun and on top of I can understand why Gust chose to start here instead of the beginning; as the game-play loop of heading up the ranks and re-building the guild is satisfying. From what I heard the devs didn't have a large budget so that might be part of the reason why it feels corners have been cut. My issues are few but the DLC is a tad overpriced.
Gotta say Fairy Tail has never piqued my interest. I do love my shounen anime, but FT has always just been boobs and the power of friendship to me, whenever I've seen it. I also just don't care for the character designs.
I would love that! I hope they make more Fairy Tail games exploring the anime, whether through Gust (which would be preferred, although they have their own franchises too) or otherwise :)
I am a huge Fan of the Anime and can say its probably for the better to play the game without knowing to much about the Source material. Really... its just infuriating ^^' I agree with many of your points gameplay wise. It is fun and good but sadly way to easy. The problem is for one the very weak Port of the story. If you know the plot the scenes are even wearder ^^' Another Problem related to the Source Material are the characters themselves. Fairytail changes the appearances for important events (which are every event in the game btw). These do exist in game but only as dlc costume. That leads to the two big Problems (the actual infuriating part): 1. The costumes dont work with the awakening forms of the characters. That means for example most characters are changing their appearances in awakening. But only with the OG costume aka the Standard one. None of the costumes support that. Huge bummer :/ 2. The price policy this game runs is slap in the face of the fans. They have 2 big costume packs and a season Pass where every one of this 3 costs as much as the fullprice game. Btw the people who prorderd the collectors Edition did get 5 skins that should have been in the game in the first place for plot reasons and a handful lacrima you never need to use. No season pass included. The pass itself has none of the skinpacks included btw... I dont know if they dialed the pricing down by now but i doubt that somehow. Anyway it left a lot of fans disappointed and frustrated. It certanly did that to this Fan... Sry for the long rant. I just felt to add this extra piece of Information.
Thank you for adding it, I think it’s important information by the sounds of things and I can’t comment on everything since I don’t know the series that well. And yeah, the costume thing seems to be in a lot of recent Gust game unfortunately (eg. In Ryza 2 there are some costumes that are only available by pre-ordering etc). I don’t think it’s a model that they should continue with, everyone complains about it lol at least offer them individually somehow >< but yeah, good comment, thank you :)
such (licensed) games are usually made with DLC in mind. so maybe the initial plan was, to sell you the missing characters and their stories. or it`s just another game where the development was messed up by the current situation (like voice acting). maybe both. one for a sale. edit: there is actually DLC worth 387€ available on Steam right now. so, that`s the main reason, why this game exists, I think. I usually stay away from those.
I am a big Fairy Tail fan and have played all the Atelier games since Rorona. So, a fusion between the two is great and I have been enjoying the game very much. Having watched every episode, there are a few changes to the story that seem unnecessary. However, for the most part things that have been left out are not too jarring but I haven't finished it yet so, I might change that view. All over, this is a very good game and I am not disappointed. This is in stark comparison to the "Is it wrong to pick up girls in a dungeon" game which came out about the same time and is a total piece of trash.
Sure are aloooooot of balloons in this game! Jokes aside, it does look fun. My backlog is demanding I not pick this up right now, so I'll get it later down the line. Awesome review.
As a huge fan of the anime I absolutely love this game. That being said the cut content and corners this game took really made me upset. I want a second game that expands on this in every way
Warning for the Switch version, the overworld frame rate is horrible, consistently falling into the teens when drawing anything off in the distance (it can be smooth when facing walls, lol). The battles are super smooth, but if overworld slowdown bugs you, do not get that version. Hopefully the *$60 SEASON PASS* will give them the budget they need to go back and patch the optimization up to a smooth 30, or at least make the drops less dramatic
Yep honestly this is a wait for a sale type of Game as someone who isn't the biggest fan of fairy tail i'll be waiting until black friday around 20 bucks

The good old 3 episode rule just doesn't appeal to modern anime fans anymore. It's so sad. Then again, I ended up quitting after like 170 episodes, so maybe I'm the weird one, lol. The show always felt like it'd make for a better video game series to me. I'd love to see Gust take this formula and use it to tell the full story one day
