  • Medieval Byzantine Chant, 7th century AD.
Title: "Τη Υπερμάχω Στρατηγώ" (Unto the Defender General)
    Service: Akathist Hymn
    Performers: Greek Byzantine Choir
    Album: "The Akathist Hymn"
This famous kontakion comes from the 7th century Akathist to the Theotokos, is attributed to St. Romanos the Melodist and it is a hymn addressing Mary as the savior of Constantinople in the 626 AD siege. There are many versions of the chant, with varying duration, though the most frequently used is the shortest, which is about 1'50" long. This version is a lengthier one, with a duration of about 10 minutes. Lengthier still versions exist, even up to 20+ minutes.
The Akathist Hymn is chanted traditionally in its entirety on the 5th Saturday of Lent, but it's also divided into 4 parts and each part is chanted each Saturday of Lent from the first Saturday to the fourth and then the whole Service on the fifth. Each of these services occur on Friday evenings, as according to byzantine calendar, the beginning of one day is immediately after the sunset of the previous one (hence Saturday begins with the sunset of Friday).
    ~
    ~
    English:
Unto the Defender General the dues of victory,
and for the deliverance from woes, the thanksgiving
I, Thy city, ascribe Thee, O Theotokos.
    And having your might unassailable,
    deliver me from all danger
so that I may cry unto Thee:
    Rejoice, O Bride unwedded.

      Quidam Graecus Ενα ποίημα ειναι ο εθνικός μας υμνος απο εναν ποιητή και δεν συνδέεται με τιποτα. Μετέπειτα έγινε. Ο Ακάθιστος είναι συνδεδεμένος αμεσα με την ιστορια μας. Διαφωνείς σε αυτο;;

Stunning and Beautiful! Callixtinus I have included a better, more accurate translation in Elizabethan English: Ancient English instead of the modern English, it has more beauty to it. I use the translations from Holy Transfiguration Monastery in Boston Massachussets, as they have the best Greek to English translations than anyone else. They translated them so that they can be chanted in the same meter, same syllables and timing as the Greek, making their translations the best I've seen.

"To Thee the Champion Leader we Thy Flock Dedicate,
A Feast Victory and of Thanksgiving, as one rescued out of sufferings O Theotokos, but as thou art one which might is invisible, from all dangers be do thou deliver us, that we may cry to thee, Rejoice Thou Bride Unwedded"
    Excellent Post. God Bless!

The most accurant definition of the byzantine empire is East Roman Empire. A definition thar derives from the administrative division of the roman empire the 4th cent.a.d.And although it ened up to be e greek empire, for many years they avoided calling themselves greeks (hellenes) because the word was given a bad name as a reference to those faithful to the old religion of olympian gods rather than their christian rulers.Politicly a 'byzantine"is a conciliative term to include both these parts

I have to thank you for considering my comment in one of your videos and providing the Greek text; in this simple way you have made the listening to the chant much more immersive for those of us who can read Greek.
Something amusing: I first heard this hymn, in fact this very recording, from the most unlikely source many years ago: a bizarre, somewhat mediocre Gnostic-themed P.C. game, 'Pilgrim', released in the '90s involving Cathars in France. How more out of context can such a thing be?

i guess he is just stating that there has never been a byzantine empire, since this name, was given from the full of complexes German historian Wolf. The real name of the empire was Romania or Kingdom of Romans or East Roman Empire. Don't forget that Greeks call ourselves Romioi, not Byzantines! :)

All christian churches are worshipping One GOD and believe in Christ and His resurrection and 2nd coming for Judgement .Why then so many churches and many are fighting among themselves and against other churches. Christ built his church on the rock (St Peter) There were 12 diciples but only one church and all disciples were united and worked together. If Christianity has to be spread all over the world in all nations hristians should stop in fighting and remain in Grace of True God always.

Chacko Panjikattil Our savior, Yashua, was a devout Jew. His followers were with the same scenting of Luke. These Apostles did not establish what passes for any of the big denominations today. Neither Roman or Orthodontist dos. They called themselves Jews and Christ's adherents were followers of THE. WAY. They would not be call d 'Christian' until maybe 150 years after the Crucifixion. In Antioch, Syria. The church of Acts II does not resemble the ritualized Pomp and hierarchy of the churches today.

@ninjahobo3 The orthodox shold rise to arms and bring it back to its glory, eliminate islam culture and architecture from the holy eastern city! But not hurt any islamist in the process, and ensure all their artifacts and wealth be preserved and given back to them... It shold becomse the equivalent of Vatican, under the old name of the Byzantine Empire (not true, it will still be only one city, but to keep the name) and all orthodoxy be ruled by one patriarch from there! May the orthodox unite!

The only TRUE church of God is Orthodox Church...all other churches fell into heresy, so isnt the same!!! We kept all holy traditions from apostolic time and holy fathers and Roman Catholics and others changed all of that so they stepped away from its original traditional teachings... Jesus church isnt Protestant, or Roman Catholics, or Baptist, its ORTHODOX!!!
