What is "WOKE"?: Culture & K-pop

  • The time has finally come, and I am so happy I've finally finished this behemoth of an essay. For those who have heard of the term WOKE, and may not know what it means, where it came from, and how it has become what it is today, Woke (as my fellow K-Tuber ‪@choujimi‬ pointed out) is a word that is casually thrown around without clear explanation as to what the word means, especially in an argument, so I decided 4 months ago that I would make a video tackling this subject of "what is WOKE".
However, I will also be going further into how woke-mindedness is having a negative effect on modern culture and even Korea (mainly the K-pop sphere).
I also want to point out that it's not just Choujimi's video, every single K-Tube video I have ever made addressing these issues have also lead me inevitably to make this video. I am really great full for my brother posing this question, because no one in the K-Tube sphere has ever asked this question before. This is not only Chouji's question, but many other's question as well, so I truly hope that this hour and twenty-five minute long video gives every you guys the answer to this question.

This should be “required” listening for all. The voice of reason, clarity, insight, experience, and heart. A brilliant and thoughtful composition. Thank you.

Finally I see a video like this in kpop UA-cam. It’s sad and kinda terrifying to say but this was a brave video to upload seeing how the crowd reacts to these type of opinions. Kpop stans want idols to speak up about social and political issues but only to say things they agree with. What is the point then? Why do they need idols to desperately tell them what they stand for? Why do people judge other people on their social and political beliefs? And if an idol expresses different opinions why are they so scared and threatened?

Firstly, I want to thank you so much for such a kind comment, it really warms my heart to see a response like this.
I was very nervous and anxious about making this video, it took four months going back and forth between working on it and deciding weather to release it or not, but I eventually decided to release it and I’m glad that I did. Thank you again for your beautiful comment, pinterestmagazinee. 🙏🩵✨

Sometimes good intentions aren't so good in the bigger picture. Wanting to help and do the right thing doesn't always work out, it creates conflicts and ideology that don't really help anyone.
I know woke doesn't mean this but it fits in this context. It's why actual spiritual teachers don't force their help onto others because they know that people have different journeys in life.
Even if our intentions are pure, believing we know what should happen to whom, and when, is the working of the ego. We may want the best for all beings, but we cannot know why their path is unfolding at it is or what they need to learn.

I definitely feel what you’re saying, unfortunately it’s not just teen girls, it’s high school graduates as well as some overseas netizens. It’s a mixed bag of people who think and act this way in K-pop communities.

31:14 I kind of diasagree many kpop stans listen to kpop because they don't like how western music sound specially rap music, so it's a shock to their system when idols sing about that stuff because how can my innocent idols have just awful thought even though most idols are adults or when they dive into older generations or worst dive into Khiphop and hear stuff like that so they insert themselves into fandoms and korean music genre(because let's be reall most kpop stans think all korean music in kpop) we also have to careful because the feminist movement in korea is new and many men in korean are against this movement, so both sides of the demographic are sensitive to this topic so it wasn't just I-Fans attacking leo but some K-fans( even though most explained it mistranslated), still doesn justify destroying a kids career before it even started, and specially since they were misinterpreted what he said

I don’t disagree with you. I think there are people that feel the way that you just described, but I have literally seen Americans bash Leo in the comment section of videos and shorts, calling him the worst things, and acting like there’s some double standard when Leo rapped and when western rappers rap like this.
Secondly, there was no rule stating that he couldn’t rap in whatever way he felt inspired to, and Leo was inspired by Western rappers, so he took his inspiration and influence from that and wrapped. There was no rule in the showdown saying that he had to wrap in a “K-pop style”.
Thirdly, there’s a whole other genre of Korean music, called “underground hip-hop” started by ‘Tiger JK’, and many others from way back. There are people in America that don’t even like underground Korean hip-hop, because they think they’re copying us, and acting like they’re from the streets, while at the same time, there are other Westerners, who like underground Korean hip-hop and love that we inspired a whole other ethnicity to embrace a genre as unique to black culture as rap to integrate it into their own culture. So I don’t disagree with you, however I would just add that it’s and & both with regards to your view and mine.
And lastly, Leo is not Korean fully, he’s from Australia, so he is more familiar with, and understands American rap, (specifically black American rap) In the Trainee A vlog that the showdown took place in, he mentioned his inspiration for rap is black American rap, and listed some artists from that genre.
If it was K-pop, Leo would not have rapped this way, but this was not a K-pop issue. This was a showdown between trainees that took place every so often within the training system of Trainee A, so it’s not a K-pop situation. He’s very westernized, so there’s those things to consider as well.

@@moonlight_antonio I agree with, yeah the way leo was bashed was unfortunate and as for the underground hip-hop that logic never made sense to me because by that logic most music should be only sang and dance by the people that created it , kpop, khiphop and korean underground hiphop started as being inspired by black hiphop or rap culture because now became it's own thing, not only that culture is meant to be shared not gate kept and sooner people learn this the better we are going to be as people, it's also ironic when people of the same race but from a different ethnicity are very open towards sharing our culture. any ways I love the video.

Having a sheltered life isn't as great as most people think it is. I think I've said something about this before on another video or on one of your livestreams.
I agree with you and Amala.
In order to truly be awake, you kind of have to go through suffering and struggles. Otherwise you won't learn anything of worth and you can't help other people with a skewed perspective. You wouldn't value anything you already have if you didn't struggle a little.
This creates victim-mentality, people-pleasing tendencies, and lack which helps no one.

I like the idea of woke culture, I just how people use it and what it has become. that fact that many woke people have become the people they hate or try to shelter people from ideas and topic that should be talked about, hating on other country that have don't hold American Ideologies even though is some aspects we might be more progressive that america and lying on many laws, believes and the way of life many of us live just to push a narrative to make Eastern woke Ideology seem like the savior that our people to have a better means of living . This goes for conservatives too, I think both extreme of their side of the political scene are dangerous even if both sides have some good I ideas.

    an others qualitative video
your number of views and succribers deserve to have 3 more zeros
i agree and i related on all what you said
as you know i'm originary from algeria, and unlike some algerian i don't have a caucasian feature or color of skin, and you know i'm muslim and i wear the muslim veil
i wont lie have faced racism and discrimination because mon origin and my religion but my live is fine here, for now i rather live here than in algeria.
but the problem in france that because of capitalism life the becan expencif fir normal people, snd some politics rather than pointing the right culpirit they point stranger (of color) and there favorite victim are muslim
i told this once but i'm again the americanisation of the world right now they want the european union to become A federal state like the USA i'm again that one of the reasons why i want France leave the european union and i feel like USA want crush the social system,
from i know of the US system unless you don't any peny you have no help and you to pays for all you stuff
the system here is different (well it worsned with the puppet that serve as our president ) unless your wealthy or very rich
you have social right and helps to a certain degree depending of the standard of you living
for exemple, in my case for now i look for job but since dont i dont have a salary the stat pay for almost my medical espances
and I receive an income from the state while I look for a job
this income is las then the half of the french minimum wage (around 1400$)
but i thankful that have that i have that i'come because other was i would in a not easy position.
also there a topic that can be puted here but i think you don't think about but it the same case of you said here
    vegans
i have nothing again vegan but there some vegan try to make you guilty because you consume produit that done with animal
i mean the treatement animal is a big topic but you can care about this topic and nit being a vegan
i respect the the fight for this cause beause it important but i don't be some make try to gaslight me because what i consume are not in conformity with the views and believes
as a muslim i don't wear revaaling cloth when there are men around, i don't drink alcool, i don't eat non halal meat, i don't have any intimate lovers contact with a man outside mariage, i wont point those who did the opposite because their believe are not mine so i don't want be juged because of my culture and my believes.

I’m curious to read more of your thoughts on this. If it wasn’t created out of a desire to understand and sympathize with others people’s struggles, where would you say it came from? You’ve heard my viewpoint,
I want to hear yours as well.
