Panthers Unable to Clinch The Cup at Home As Special Teams Struggled (Again)

- On today's edition of the Locked on FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Jacob Winans(@JacobWinans8) for another edition of Winans Wednesday. The guys break down the Panthers 5-3 loss at home to the Edmonton Oilers as the Panthers have now lost two straight after taking a 3-0 series lead. The Cats once again let the first goal against while on the power play, which got the Panthers to make some changes to their unit on special teams. Florida trailed by three multiple times but started to mount a comeback where they responded 14 seconds after Edmonton went up 4-1, and the Panthers took over from there where they got it to a one-goal deficit with just under 16 minutes left. Paul Maurice also made changes to the top six where Verhaeghe reunited with Aleksander Barkov on the top line and Evan Rodrigues was shifted back down to the second. It was once again the Connor McDavid show as he got 4 points on the night (two goals, two assists) to carry Edmonton to victory. The guys give their three duds, when they thought the game was lost, and the shift now mentally that Florida has to do with once again having to make the long trip back to Alberta. As hostile as Edmonton will be, the Panthers’ road record this postseason gives me a bit of comfort.

embellishment has been the referee "call" this post season. interesting that the Oilers, yes Ive watched every game of the playoffs, havent been called ONCE for it and has always benefited them at key times of games and series. That being said, next year this call needs to be changed to Unsportmantlike conduct and its One or the other. The refs do not get to call both

Did he embellish to try and draw the call in your opinion or should him getting hit in the hand result in him flailing out and falling down instead of playing hockey... embellishment is a bad rule never been a fan of it, but that was the most clear call for embellishment I have ever seen to argue that he flopped is crazy

It seems like a long time ago when we joked Panthers would sweep. This looks like a complete meltdown and Maurice is saying this is fine.

Just didn't get the bounces they needed, but dominated in 5 v 5 play. They should be able to close this out in 6 or 7. Most people predicted a 6-gamer, not a sweep or 5 game series. Tkachuk played fantastic, so did Rodrigues.
Panthers have won one on the road to go 3-0 now GET. IT. DONE. Inexcusable, just squash the Oilers on Friday.

Gotta love this fanbase. Bob has carried us, and he's the dud? How about we stop giving them prime chances on breakaways. Or letting them park right in front of the net. I'd love to see us on a damn breakaway. See how much better Skinner would do. Montour has been an embarrassment. Our first line has been MIA. Special teams have been a freakin disaster, and Okposo is a waste on the ice.
EDIT: ESPN is a freakin joke. It goes beyond the obvious cheering for ths Oilspills. The NHL refs have been a total abomination. The lack of calls on the Oilspills is astonishing.
Is this a “mini slump” is this lack of desperation? Can they get over it and win or will this be an epic collapse that will take 10 years or more to get back to the finals? Now Oilers have last change tough task to win there. McDavid I thought he was hurt a bit but not enough apparently. On that first shorty that move was the same one that Bob stopped twice on breakaways in a previous game. Maybe he waited a split second longer to back hand it and it snuck in. Also puck luck #2 for Oilers off the Oilers’ knee that was going wide…like off Mikko’s elbow. We need some puck luck too! I’m losing confidence in Maurice.
Barkov can't cover mcdavid he is to fast and I don't c how anyone can stop him unless they break his legs

I said it wasnt a series until you lose at home, and now that the Panthers lost game 5 this is entirely a new series. We might be actually witnessing history in the making here if the Oil force game 7 I think they will take it.

The Panthers gave up like 5 breakaways in games 1-3. The difference is Bob made those saves.
And how much weight has Bob lost so far this playoffs? Remember last year when he faded out similarly?
He seems like a nervous wreck. Really has to have his mental game dialed in to play good.
Boys, I’m medical and re Barky, I’m thinking he’s gutting it out with head injury effects that he’s not shared with his medical people. That hit from Draisaitl on his head was serious I believe. But if he’s not shared his symptoms with anyone…….. think about it anyway. I’ve watched every game. It’s crystal clear he’s not himself at all since that hit. Take it easier on him maybe.
The Oilers are doing a much better job keeping bodies in the crease to agitate & screen the goalie. Skinner got way too many clean looks. Bob often has someone posted in front of him (not cleared out) or even bumping him in the net. I'd like to see Cousins replace Okposo on the energy line. Announcing seems ridiculously pro-Edmonton. The phrase "best player in the game" gets endlessly repeated ad nauseam. Despite their recent success, the Panthers remain the "no respect" team in the league (just ask Bill Zito).
Hope we can get back to the loose, hustling, aggressive style of play that got us this far (there were glimpses of it in the 2nd period). This time of year, we all consider ourselves "experts" at what needs to be changed but Maurice knows best. In Paul we trust. If the Cats are able to claw out a Game 6 win, it would be apropos for this team to win it on the road while under extreme pressure & adversity.
Connor McDavid 8 points in the last 2 games and 10 points in the last 3 games. GM Zito has done everything he can to win and if panthers lose they are not coming back to the stanley cup finals next year because they will be too tired.

@sukhjitsingh8269 at least 3 were empty net goals. At least 2 were cheating refs retracting on and giving embellishment that prevented one. The past 2 games were only a margin of 2 goal difference if you adapt for those factors. Panthers had what 80 shots on goal or 80 shots when at home the other night yes? Panthers finish your mediocre cheating ref team at home. Only reason you even got this far was Panthers tripping over their own laces.

Dug themselves too big a hole. They fought valiantly but it's going to be hard to come back from 2 3 goal deficits, let alone in a Stanley Cup final. I think you're exactly right with the SHG setting a terrible tone for the game these last 2 games. Gotta regroup and play a good game Friday

@@DarkCode ya they have the best defensive system in the world. Unfortunately a single cherry picker and their blue line takes away the forecheck and the defence one on one or two on one time and time again come up short and Bob can’t bail them out.
Anyone can win tomorrow but it’s hard to see how that Panthers do it. The Oil outperformed them for most of games 1,3,4,5,6…. Cats will need their best game of the season
