I think this actually is my favourite bon iversong. I always think its something else, but I keep going back to this song and listening to it on repeat for half an hour.
The live debut has much more human feel and effect than this track and most others on the studio album. That's unfortunately been the story for many new albums this year. Oh well. Still good.
I cried the first time I heard it, and I was just watching videos of Eaux Claires online! Bet it sounded like the voice of God or something. Neeeeeeed to hear this live!
Definitely! I saw an interview somewhere where Justin actually said that it was after listening to hide and seek and wanting to write something like that that he wrote "woods"
Great track. I read in a few articles that the technology, if you will, is actually a Messina that was developed by Vernon and one of his engineers with the last name Messina (his first name escapes me). I don't think a vocoder was used, as many people have mentioned. At the end of this video Messina is even in the text. Either way, one of Justin Vernon's best 'love' songs.
I cannot stop listening to this song. I'm aching. I'm aching and I can't stop. I can't stop the ache. This song feels like an embodiment of my ache. Justin Vernon is a mediator of all heartache.
I usually can't get myself to cry... Not trying to sound cool or anything, I wish I could more often. But this song makes me weep, and for no particular reason.
I’ve seen this live many times. It is a song that has always made me cry. To me, it has gotten me through break ups, deaths, and suicide attempts. When I saw Justin in Washington, DC and he played this I was overcome with emotion. I was bawling my eyes out. A kind stranger put his hand on my shoulder and simple said, “he’s helped me through a lot too” and gave me a hug. Thank you Justin, and thank you kind stranger. This is the power of music.
This song, to me, is the most powerful and emotional on the album. The lyrics reveal the feeling of being stuck, lost, and confused. It's a very relateable song for me. I'm really disappointed by the amount of people hating on this album, saying he's trying too hard or ruining his voice with autotune. Justin is just experimenting with sound in in, brilliant ways. He's kind of saying fuck you, this is music because I say it is. If you don't like it, shove it. I don't feel at all that the autotune is cheap or a cop out. If you listen very closely with headphones, the amount of detail put into the autotuned voices are amazing You can really hear each individual pitch and how they move and interact with each other. There is far more to this song than is apparent, it just takes some digging to discover.

his performances of this song out just out of this world. I 100% agree this is the most powerful and emotional songs on the album. It is such an experience
The song feels like arguing with yourself in a dream and losing something in return. Like grasping at trying to understand something out of reach but wanting desperately to want it back. It’s…perfect.
"Oh then how we gonna cry, 'cause it once might not mean something." Those are some powerful words that resonated with me in the first listen. Really loving this interpretation!
I LOVE the moments when the effects glitch like at 01:04! Imperfections like these make the electronic elements seem so organic and inviting despite sounding very artificial. Such a wonderful, simple little song! 🖤🖤🖤
I don’t think lyrics have ever spoken to me like these. Reminds me of the intentional, very futile, and many “last weekends” or “trips” an ex and I put ourselves through. Knowing we were not going to work but struggling to be emotionally mature enough to let go.
I think what makes the song so good is how Justin uses his voice as an instrument. Sure, it's singing into a vocalizer, but the way he sings and what he's singing about makes all of his songs so special.
This whole album was so worth the wait. The people bashing all over this album aren't Bon Iver fans, they're Folk/Indie music fans. I love the whole concept behind this album. There's so much emotion, meaning, and love in the lyrics and Bon Iver delivers as always in that aspect. A lot of people may not enjoy this side of Bon Iver, but really all they changed was their sound and I think it's a beautifully crafted work of art. Keep up the great work Justin.

This song is incredible. I get the chills every time I listen to it. I love it because the lyrics are undecipherable, and I think they are supposed to be that way. When I listen to them I hear words that are bursting with emotion, and for a while, I poured over the lyrics trying to understand what the message was behind the emotions, until I realized that maybe, just maybe, the message is the in the emotions. The artistic choice to use the Prismizer forces you to focus on the words and how they are sung, but when you strip away the words, you're left with the true meaning of the song. Perhaps that's also why the song titles for this album are filled with atypical characters.
if you're not a musician (including vocalist) i don't blame you for not liking this song. all the harmonies and the way he uses this vocoder is just so chilling it blows me away. this is one of those songs you reallyyyyy have to pay attention and listen to. listen to every little vocal detail.

In a way I'm glad so many don't like it - that just makes this AMAZING piece of art that much more personal, private, and exclusive. Thanks Bon Iver for following through with this album!
What I love about this song is how much Justin has evolved his song “Woods.” It all started with JV toying around with autotune and releasing Woods on the Blood Bank EP. Then he evolved it into “Still” with his side project Volcano Choir. Then he and Kanye worked together to make “Lost in the World.” Finally, came “Creeks.” I just love the generally progression and evolution of a little song that Vernon just keeps revisiting
I cried the first time I heard this song. I can only imagine how cool this would have been to hear live at Eaux Claires. Sounding like the voice of a God or something. AND HOW DOES ONE acquire the use of Prismizer?
Captain Ford if you hear the live version of him at Eaux Claires. Just imagining how loud it must have been. Not saying he has the voice of god. The volume of his voice and the vocoder instrument he plays would have just sounded legendary over a huge space.
The Opening Crawl Not sure the translation, but they include it because the "instrument" that his vocals are being manipulated by is called the Messina. Invented specifically for vocal situations like this.
bon iver songs are all truly mysterious and majestic. all of them are art. i do not get these hollow men who question the new music of bon iver. y the hell u complaining its not like for emma, its not like bon iver, bon iver or blood bank or whatever but one thing's for sure, if you love the artist you are willing to accept the music, the art they are creating. man, im a preachah mhm ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Despite how different this is from the old acoustic/indie rock stuff Justin used to write, this is crazy beautiful and so passionate. I also commend him for being so willing to experiment and try a new approach, especially using something as brand new and innovative as the Messina. This is 100% incredible, in my opinion.
AOTY NOMS: Beyoncé Kanye West Frank Ocean Radiohead David Bowie Winner is Beyoncé. Bowie and Radiohead split votes. Bon Iver gets nom in Best Alternative album.
i was gonna say i was annoyed that i didn't find this album and amazing artist, but instead i am going to say i am so grateful that i did indeed discover Bon Iver and the magic that is produces by this sensational artist.
This is absolutely amazing, the lyrical depth, art, and ridiculously amazing production. Until you understand the depth of this track/album, don't criticize it, it takes alot of attention to actually understand what its about/where its coming from and what its trying to achieve.
E Lancelot yes it is. Combination of re-engineering the software and using a physical instrument to allow that effect to be done live. Otherwise there's so much going on that it creates lag.
'Deus ex machina' is a concept that literally means 'god inside the machine', an idea taken from ancient plays that would have their actors portraying 'God' represented onstage inside a magic box. Nowadays it usually applies to some silly and contrived 'get out clause', or bad plot writing; for example, the aliens in War of the Worlds suddenly being allergic to our atmosphere even though that's a ridiculous plot twist. In this instance, Chris Messina is the album producer, and also lent his name to the 'Messina' which is an audio program and synthesizer used to create these vocal effects. So it's sort of... god inside the messina, the music has found salvation from an ethereal external source. Semi-joking self-referencial fun.
[Verse 1] Down along the creek I remember something Her, the heron hurried away When first I breeched that last Sunday (Ooh) [Verse 2] Low moon don the yellow road I remember something That leaving wasn't easing all that heaving in my vines And as certain it is evening 'at is NOW is not the time (Ooooh) [Verse 3] Toiling with your blood I remember something In B, un-rationed kissing on a night second to last Finding both your hands as second sun came past the glass And oh, I know it felt right and I had you in my grasp [Verse 4] Oh then, how we gonna cry? Cause it once might not mean something? And love at second glance, it is not something that we'll need Honey, understand that I have been left here in the reeds But all I'm trying to do is get my feet out from the crease [Outro] And I see you Turn around, you're my A Team Turn around, now you're my A Team GOD DAMN, turn around now You're my A Team
It's been over a year since I have really listened to this song, and it just sent shivers through my whole body; I doubt any other song has had that powerful of an effect on me since the last time I heard this.
Why are so many people complaining about this 'change' to Bon Iver's sound? Have none of y'all heard 'Woods' from the Blood Bank EP? This is a progression from that sound - just a more raw emotion that comes out in the slightly more discordant vocoder. And for the record Bon Iver came upon this style and THEN started collaborating with Kanye, who sampled 'Woods' for his 'Lost in the world' track. Enjoy the album. You'll soon realise that it's a masterpiece.
no ur exactly right.... first little bit feels very Fall Boys Choir, and right at 1:27 is same feeling as Michant... but the whole thing feels very Woods thematically

Then he and Kanye worked together to make “Lost in the World.” Finally, came “Creeks.” I just love the generally progression and evolution of a little song that Vernon just keeps revisiting
Favorite Bon Iver album yet.
I cried the first time I heard this song. I can only imagine how cool this would have been to hear live at Eaux Claires. Sounding like the voice of a God or something. AND HOW DOES ONE acquire the use of Prismizer?
It was absolutely amazing to hear it live at Eaux Claires and I did that same thing - cry. It was absolutely emotional!
Jerry Differding I listened to the recordings of Eaux Claire's, and the surprise and cheering and uproar after his pauses was just awe inspiring.
Casimir Media u serious mate?! 😂 "sounding like the voice of God"
This song brings me to tears. Every time.
100% gives me fall creek boys choir vibes and I love love love it
Beauty, pure beauty this whole album.
This is bringing up such deep emotions but like, it just makes me want to cry, not hit repeat. Idk. Glad they're making stuff again though!
I know right, the typing in this video is painful to watch and the 'song' ruined my ears. It hurts so bad and I just want to cry.
Well clearly some people aren't too pleased they're back
AOTY without a shadow of a doubt. Thanks Justin. The whole album is wonderful.
bon iver songs are all truly mysterious and majestic. all of them are art. i do not get these hollow men who question the new music of bon iver. y the hell u complaining its not like for emma, its not like bon iver, bon iver or blood bank or whatever but one thing's for sure, if you love the artist you are willing to accept the music, the art they are creating. man, im a preachah mhm ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This song made me forget everything all my troubles and pains for these precious 3 minutes
Despite how different this is from the old acoustic/indie rock stuff Justin used to write, this is crazy beautiful and so passionate. I also commend him for being so willing to experiment and try a new approach, especially using something as brand new and innovative as the Messina. This is 100% incredible, in my opinion.
this is absolutely stunning
released one day before Grammy eligibility ends for 2016
so that explains why so many albums were released this week
AOTY NOMS:

Bon Iver gets nom in Best Alternative album.
I completely agree with that top 5
whos bonny bear
+Chris Everhart surely David Bowie would win. Does that not make sense
i was gonna say i was annoyed that i didn't find this album and amazing artist, but instead i am going to say i am so grateful that i did indeed discover Bon Iver and the magic that is produces by this sensational artist.
This is absolutely amazing, the lyrical depth, art, and ridiculously amazing production. Until you understand the depth of this track/album, don't criticize it, it takes alot of attention to actually understand what its about/where its coming from and what its trying to achieve.
What an incredible song out of an incredible record from an incredible artist. Those lyrics and the way they are presented, just unbelievable.
Justin invented an instrument used in this album. The Messina. In collaboration from Chris Messina.
They should turn that into a product. Why not? People will want to mimic this sound, and I would love to support them.
And Francis, from Francis and the lights
As in that's the instrument used for this song?
E Lancelot yes it is. Combination of re-engineering the software and using a physical instrument to allow that effect to be done live. Otherwise there's so much going on that it creates lag.
Crap. I've been googling the vocoder he may be using forever. This is so awesome and sad at the same time.
This is one of the most beautiful song I've ever heard. I had to stop what I was doing while listening.
" oh and now we're gonna cry ? " hell yes
Joe and Tay loved sad songs 😢
I feel like im hearing a message in between the lyrics, my pulse is slow but my heart is jumping out of my chest. amen.
"Deus ex Messina" this last frame was nice
what does it mean?
Semi-joking self-referencial fun.
altas mensagens subliminares hehehe
this is exactly the way to interpret Bon Iver songs
+Bone Weight thank you very much for sharing helpful information :)
All these years later and this is still my favorite song of the entire 22, A Million/i,i cycle.
AOTY? up there with Wildflower and AMSP on my preliminary list (this might be at the top!)
Blonde?
yep, this and wildflower are unreal.
whats wildflower
avalanches comeback album. it's super good.
ain't heard that yet, but the teaser tracks were killer.
This song is so special. It's magical
This is my favorite song of all the time.
[Verse 1]
Down along the creek
I remember something
Her, the heron hurried away
When first I breeched that last Sunday (Ooh)
[Verse 2]
Low moon don the yellow road
I remember something
That leaving wasn't easing all that heaving in my vines
And as certain it is evening 'at is NOW is not the time (Ooooh)
[Verse 3]
Toiling with your blood
I remember something
In B, un-rationed kissing on a night second to last
Finding both your hands as second sun came past the glass
And oh, I know it felt right and I had you in my grasp
[Verse 4]
Oh then, how we gonna cry?
Cause it once might not mean something?
And love at second glance, it is not something that we'll need
Honey, understand that I have been left here in the reeds
But all I'm trying to do is get my feet out from the crease
[Outro]
And I see you
Turn around, you're my A Team
Turn around, now you're my A Team
GOD DAMN, turn around now
You're my A Team
It's been over a year since I have really listened to this song, and it just sent shivers through my whole body; I doubt any other song has had that powerful of an effect on me since the last time I heard this.
Kanye learned so much from Justin, he should put him on payroll for life.
Mathew Guerra but this isn't true
Let's agree to disagree then.
Guerra is a cool name. It means war. Peace brother
VersaceCanOpener We can only speculate. Unless you know him personally, how can you be so certain?
***** why aren't you asking Mathew Guerra the same question?
CHILLS throughout the whole track. gold.
I still get lost sometimes
do i still cross your mind?
@@blindertherabbit if not then nevermind...
After all of controversies, I still need him to finish that song… It’s done so well
i love it this song, Bon Iver come to chile soon!
Yes! Released 14 seconds ago!
Justin, ce morceau ouvre des portes dans mon coeur
Me: pass the aux cord
Them: yeah just don’t play anything weird
Me:
Then the homies start sobbing..... Happens every time...

Reminds me of "michicant"
Anna Hewson literally how? Lol
What? Woods is probably the most similar to this
maybe the ups and downs of the lyrics at 1:27 reminds me of the beginning of michicant.. surely it's similar to "woods" for the style :)
no ur exactly right.... first little bit feels very Fall Boys Choir, and right at 1:27 is same feeling as Michant... but the whole thing feels very Woods thematically
you have a good ear ;)
what a good Bon Iver song for this coming Hiver ! Think i ll ear it 100 times
lil Yachty brought me back here. Long time fan of Bon iver. I love bon iver. (black and musically) you loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee it. But randos might not get it.
