I’ve seen him three times once at a festival, once in a solo acoustic auditorium, and once in a large production stage setting I can’t tell which sounded better but no way in hell as has he ever sounded less than perfect
The human trying to break through the synth, creating this "please let me in" vibe. No matter how hard you try, you can't get the message across. I don't think people realize it's more than just a cool sound.
I have never cried and sobbed so hard as the first time I heard this song. I was losing my first true love and when he said "honey understand, ive been left here in the reeds" my whole body filled with the sorrow of being abandoned.
This song has such an energy to it. The pain has been captured by song. It brings up memories like yours to my mind every time I listen. So simple yet tells a story of life.
my children asked me what my favorite song of all time was. I mentioned this song. Played it on our crazy sound system. Pure silence. One of them had tears and she didn't understand why. That's the power of this song....
Had the divine pleasure of seeing this particular song performed live five rows from the stage. It was a religious experience. Haven't been the same since. Justin Vernon is incredible.
Uhh I think they're both good. I think the live version sounds a bit more natural in the sense that you can here Justin's voice a bit more and the studio synthesized version isn't as low. I think you might be conflating the performance with the synth. I think the live version is just a really good performance!
do you know why? It's the "blues" live. It's impossible to be the blues on the album because it's been time gridded in protools. The timing in this live version is all fucking blues and that makes it human, even with the live pyrism thing. people love the blues man.
At every concert when someone's favourite song comes on there is screams of excitement. This is the only exception I know of. When they play this live people grab each other and everyone's just zapped with the energy of the experience in silence. It was magical.
that clear and strong yet desperate „god damn…turn around now“ in the end broke me. what a masterpiece of performance. way better than the recorded one. ❤️💔
I just came home from the hospital today and I just had the urge to play this song to make my aching body feel calm again! Such a masterpiece from Bon Iver
The last line "God damn, turn around. You're my A-team" reminds me of the last lines of Prayer for Owen Meany when the narrator/protagonist John cries out to God to return his friend Owen from the dead... ""O God-please bring him back! I shall keep asking You." --- it is so visceral. It isn't pretty language, it isn't eloquent, it is deeply human.
Down along the creek I remember something Her, the heron hurried away When first I breeched that last Sunday Low moon don the yellow road I remember something That leaving wasn't easing all that heaving in my vines And as certain it is evening at is now is not the time, ooh Toiling with your blood I remember something In B, unrationed kissing on a night second to last Finding both your hands as second sun came past the glass And oh, I know it felt right and I had you in my grasp Oh, then how we gonna cry 'Cause it once might not mean something Love, a second glance It is not something that we'll need Honey, understand that I have been left here in the reeds But all I'm trying to do is get my feet out from the creeks And I see you Turn around, you're my A-Team Turn around now, you're my A-Team God damn, turn around now You're my A-Team

I’m back fartboy, once again. Just needed to do my yearly comment because this is my favorite performance of this song. Justin. Freaking. Vernon. I want you to sing to me as I die.
May God give this man a very joyful, rich, life full of love and strenght. Best performer alive and the holiest human being alive. Crazy how this song cuts you in half.
The thing with the live synthesizer - didn’t Imogen Heap in Hide Seek do this like 10 year ago????? I always read from Bon Ivers revolutionairy new instrument "the Messina".
People have been doing it for a while now I think Justin just found a new solution that lets you do it more efficiently in real-time Imogen did something similar once for Hide and Seek, but Justin did it for multiple songs in an album so that's probably why his more streamlined technique is getting traction TBH I wish there were more songs like Hide and Seek, she never really did the same sort of thing again. This song is the closest I've come across
fartboy287 she's constantly doing innovative things with the handling of synthasizers and other computational music stuff. This was just one thing she experimented with. But that's true, some of her Innovations I guess are starting to get to the surface of music production, and other professionals like justin start to pic these innovations and put them to its stylistic limits.
there's a difference in technology. Hide and Seek uses a vocoder - something that's been used since the 70s, so not a good landmark if we're talking innovation. Love the song though. This is a different process that can't be done in the analog domain like vocoding. It's software that digitally repitches harmonies to his voice based on a midi input. And it's not something they invented, that software has also been around for awhile. But they came up with an efficient way to do it live with low latency that not many people have.
It is Antares Harmony Engine used in a really cool way. Francis and the Lights is known for a similar technique that I think he shared with Justin. vimeo.com/239876885

The Chicago show version ua-cam.com/video/PfT3TqW4dEk/v-deo.html @20:17 is also amazing. Reverb of the hall and feel of the warm crowd takes you right into it. That whole show is magic.
That track has no right sounding this good live. Impossible. What a delight
I know right?? I didn't think it would sound as good as it does live?? Damn
So good
It sounds better live than it does recorded in my opinion. I don't really like the recorded version for whatever reason but this is insane
I’ve seen him three times once at a festival, once in a solo acoustic auditorium, and once in a large production stage setting I can’t tell which sounded better but no way in hell as has he ever sounded less than perfect
I agree. This sounds beautiful. Probably better than the studio release
I'd like to call attention to the fact that someone with the profile name "fartboy287' posted this magic. Don't judge a username by its cover.

Love how throughout the song, the silence of the audience makes it seem that Vernon is alone just singing.
Bruh 😭
If it didn't say NPR, I'd never assume a US audience could be so quiet.
I was actually shocked the first time I heard people yell because I absolutely thought he was alone in a studio.
Somebody give this song a tight hug please
Evan Saunders 🤗. Closes emoji to a hug
Okafor Mbanefo Obianuju I appreciate it!!!
please do.
Been hanging on to it for dear life. Safe with me.
Notice how that entire crowd is stunned into silence by the intensity.
This song and performance is so hard-hitting, real, and perfect.
I wonder how many people were crying right now.

`Please let me’ in is the most accurate description of this tune ever
Nailed it three years ago

No one deserves it.
This song has such an energy to it. The pain has been captured by song. It brings up memories like yours to my mind every time I listen. So simple yet tells a story of life.
I heard this live while microdosing and losing a 8 year relationship and that same line broke me- so much passion.
God shut up
This is so freaking factual.
the passion emulated by a vocoded voice literally spends chills down my back. So beautiful.
This song has a scientific appeal to the human soul. Wow.
@Alexander Ranin Sounded so nice, had to comment twice.
I like that! I wondered why this song is so captivating to me
Scientific appeal?

Alex Schaff yes! seems like each line is completely connected to each other.
He messed up? Where lol

No, he messes up the lyrics. Listen to this and follow the official lyrics.
wait, he messed up?
It makes you want to live one more day. To listen one more time. Music saves lives, mine being one of them
Its like a prism...just that you shoot your raw voice on it and it expresses the emotional layers in your voice..

This is ridiculously powerful, expresses emotions I can't even put into words
Best version. Live synthesized is way better than album synthesized.
I think the eauclair debut of this song is the quintessential version. It's so raw and so powerful.

I dont think so. Here main voice is more present. Maybe is better for live version, but i think the album one is much much better.
This version is too staccato.
At every concert when someone's favourite song comes on there is screams of excitement. This is the only exception I know of. When they play this live people grab each other and everyone's just zapped with the energy of the experience in silence. It was magical.
I've had this on a loop for two hours. Help.
that clear and strong yet desperate „god damn…turn around now“ in the end broke me. what a masterpiece of performance. way better than the recorded one. ❤️💔
Probably my favorite performance of this song that he has done. I can feel the emotion in his voice when he sings.
Simply adore this performance
I keep coming back to this over and over
I’ve watched this version so many times that I’ve started mucking up the lyrics too. Absolute nirvana

In an interview Justin said that Woods was based off that Imogen Heap song. I believe it was an interview with The New Yorker
