- Well over a decade after the last instalment, the TopSpin series is back, and thanks to a mixture of comfortingly familiar gameplay, and new mechanics, it's shaping up to be a Grand Slam return.
We've been waiting a long time for TopSpin 2K25; so much so that the last title in the series - TopSpin 4 -, was released in 2011 for Xbox 360, PS3 and Nintendo Wii, with two entirely new generations of consoles releasing in the 13 years since. We’ve had Gangnam Style, the Ice Bucket Challenge craze, Brexit, four royal weddings, Roger Federer retiring and even Donald Trump becoming president. But now, finally, a new TopSpin title is here.

It's 2024. They should be able to capture animations straight from TV footage. Plenty of papers that explained how to do this over the last decade. Also, graphically there's no excuse for it looking this bad with only have two players to model. Lighting looks horrible, textures look horrid, and expressions are garbage.

Only thing I agree with there is the expressions. Everything else is at an ok level, not horrible. The surfaces of the court actually look very good I’d say and the shadows look on point. 3:39 for reference.

@@TC-td1vx Also maybe people should be paying more attention to GAMEPLAY and not graphics since every major tennis game that comes out has HORRENDOUS gameplay and Top Spin 4 is still BY FAR the best tennis game ever made because it's the only one that doing max power shots from one side to the other all the time is not the only viable option? Or because it's the only game where the AI made "human mistakes"?
I mean sure, the graphics aren't impressive but they're more than fine... and I want a tennis game with fucking good gameplay and not another Tennis World Tour or AO Tennis flop where the devs didn't understand how the damn sport of tennis is played...

@@irgendeinname9256clearly a reskin of topspin 4 with some additions, no grunting no attention to small details everything except gameplay has been very average if not bad i understand they are testing waters with this one but damn this game isn't even out but looks dated (it's not professional coming from them) that's what a topspin game should be in 2018 to 2021 at best but not in 2024 + maybe not having djokovic and rafa is blasphemous, there is no improvement animation wise and no commentator even worst no HAWKEYE/CHALLENGES in 2024 as john mcenroe says it the best way and a phrase that suits what we seen from the game so far : "you cannot be serious man you CANNOT be serious !".

In TopSpin 4 the shot meter thing was there showing your timing, but you could turn off all the helpers in the menu. I'm sure that will be the same case in 2K25.

@@BenefactorEnthusiast yes, you can turn off every single aid. The timing meter, timing text, power gauge, stamina bar, the serve aiming circle, and the little x on the court to see where ball will land. Just like TS4
glad to know we still have some game developers who aren't hell bent on making previous AAA immersive games look like harry potter.

Top Spin 2 was pretty arcadey but it's been the best one. I agree it looks slow and clunky and that's been my issue with all the games since 2
I’m playing AO Tennis 2 right now and there’s a ball speed and game speed setting so we may see that here if wee want to change it. Did TS4 have that?
to me still Virtua Tennis 2 is the most exciting tennis game, fun, simple, easy to play, hard to play against those who play really well, this feels like playing a Golf game
I really liked virtua tennis & the original topspin for xbox from 2002 looks to be still the best tennis game.
Bruh, Smashcourt tennis 3 was so damn good for 360 back in the day.
topspin 4 you get a sense of "weight" behind the ball when you hit a good shot or slice but this ball looks like its just floating through the court
We’re seeing a lot of shots that aren’t timed well though so you probably gotta earn those kind of shots which I think is better. Players shouldn’t be able to play good shots while not playing well.
People playing are bad asf. It should be better with better players, like TS4.

I loved Topspin 4 but I always said it needed a decent error/challenge mechanic where the calls wouldn't be 100 truly accurate but where the player paying attention could raise a challenge and have the truth revealed to add tension and an element of realism
In rallies I don’t see any evidence of good personalised motion cap tbh, compared with Full Ace Tennis or Tennis Elbow. It’s generic FH and BH mechanics
Ooo. They Full Ace Tennis looks great. Also terrible..you know what I mean. Gameplay looks awesome, players are instantly recognisable due to technique (definitely not looks). Shots look convincing in all the directions hit I saw. Pace looked good. Volleying looked pretty average.
I'd happily play that from what I see there. Give those guys a budget to get the graphics up to speed and it'd be magical.
How'd they get the motion right? Capture it from TV footage?
@@Seaby41 yeah facial features are hilarious(ly bad). Overheads are rough but other than that it’s pretty good. It’s nice to be able to use real kits too. Not sure how the team did the capture, think they’re just great developers

You had been gone since 2011, it’s been 14 years. After ive seen gameplay, i realized you started making this game in 2022.
Small shout but it’s nice to finally have all 4 grand slams represented in the TopSpin series. I remember the debacle with ownership rights over the slams during the TS4, Grand Spam Tennis era.
After watching the gameplay trailers I saw that TS2k25 seems to have the same issue as previous tennis games (after TS4) regarding the footwork before hitting the ball.
In real tennis, and in TS4, you don't lock in the feet 10 seconds before the shot like *this is how and where I'm gonna stand*, you just don't now, and keep moving your feet until you make the shot, as portrayed in TS4. The lock-in feet-thing makes the game seem less lively and smooth, please fix this.
After watching the gameplay i am pleased with what i been seen,the graphics are not next gen but i will take gameplay over graphics ,tennis is not an easy game to reproduce so i do not care about the moving feet? this a video game not a live tennis broadcast .Day one purchase
@@time2shinex707but top spin 4 did that very clearly..footwork and movement is extremely important to a tennis game. So there really isn’t an excuse overall when it’s already been done by this company overall.

I was wondering if game have the Instant replay or the lines camera replay were you could challenge a call. Does the game have the time set on the players serve while he/ she is about to sevre?
what i've always wondered with topspin, they can get the licenses for these players but can't use their real grunts? idk it's not a massive deal but it just puts me off

Two of my big questions are (1) Player roster and (2) Can we create/download players on console/mod players into the game on PC? It sounds like the roster will only be around 30 players by default, meaning you're talking about roughly 15 men and 15 women give or take...that's probably not enough to keep me interested long-term so I'm really hoping there's a way for us to expand the pool ourselves.
As long as this game continues to be released in serials like NBA 2k then it can continue to build on it self. New character models, more venues, more detailed career mode. But what they need to nail is the gameplay. If the gameplay is great and they continue to build on the game year after year then this can be great. I'm assuming that if they do topspin 2k26 then they can just paste and copy the existing venues and motion captures, and continue to add year after year.
Why,in 2024 do they have to build up as though they're having their first attempt at it?It was done 13 years ago with the gameplay and player animations so you'd think they would carry on from what they created back then.

Not really exactly the same, I still can see that the TS4 animation is a little bit more fluid, but nonetheless, 2k25 animation is still great. Also 2k25 needs to add extra footwork while waiting for the ball to come to him. To me players looked stationary most of the time while waiting for the ball. TS4 has those extra footwork while waiting for the ball.
Man they could have definitely improved here. Especially the way they just stand still without moving when they wait for the ball looks very weird
I hope this demo just had the four Grand Slam courts and the full version comes with 40-50 different courts like Top Spin 4.
In gameplay you can see a bunch of other courts locked

Topspin 1 for the original Xbox got it right...PAM development had no budget when creating that tennis game back in 2002, and it is still the best playing tennis game of all time IMO. I sure hope this one is similar...but doubt it.

Virtua Tennis 3, game and movement wise, is still waaaay better IMO.

I loved TS4, espescially playing with the move controller. Awesome soundtrack, (early Calvin Harris). Spent soooo many hours on this game. Cant wait. Hopefully it will work with move controllers again
When the Sega Dreamcast released back in the days I loved playing Virtua Tennis 2 (arcade like controls, easy to learn, hard to master against good players). Recently I bought AO Tennis 2 on the PS5 to get back into the tennis game (more towards a mixed arcade/simulation compared to Virtua Tennis 2). Now I'm wondering what makes Top Spin 2K25 the better game compared to AO Tennis 2?
I would be very interested in to see the full list of real life tennis players included in the game at launch.

I hope there is a good roster of players considering there are tons of venues. Although from things I have read it doesn’t seem to be the case. Still looking forward to the game though.
Top Spin 4 had a lot of real players missing but there were enough fictional players with variable playstyles. Played on highest difficulty and full matches but could never beat Djokovic. I wanted to improve my attributes to beat him but I had already maxed out!
The best topspin was the og. That was a fun game.

My review on top spin 5 after watching the first videos:
I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT NO UA-cam CHANNEL HAS YET MENTIONED THE ABSOLUTELY POOR WORK THAT HAS BEEN DONE WITH TOP SPIN 5.
Let's start with the graphic improvement which is ridiculous to say the least, top spin 4 came out in 2011 so top spin 5 came out 13 years later!! Personally, I don't notice such a clear graphic improvement compared to the previous chapter. In fact, comparing the two chapters despite the 13 year difference, the difference from a graphic point of view is really minimal.
Then the animations, many (almost all?) of which were directly copied and pasted from top spin 4, some even from the first top spin! (you can see it in an animation of Federer's backhand) Even the ball timing fonts are identical to the 4, notice how the forehand and backhand slice animations are identical to the chapter from 13 years ago,
or many of the forehand, backhand, volley and serve animations, many of these are identical to top spin 4! And some new animations are ridiculous, look at Federer's backhand for example which has nothing to do with the real counterpart and with any professional tennis counterpart (it looks like an amateur backhand in some animations) or Federer's straight-legged forehand Has anyone ever seen him play like this? I never.
The gameplay, graphics and game mechanics seem incredibly similar after 13 years, the timing on the ball is the same and also the ridiculous preparation animation (such a long pause when you raise the racket over your shoulder is unrealistic ).
The speed of the ball is funny, sometimes it seems to defy the laws of physics because of how slow it is, it seems like they are playing on the lunar surface, both in groundstrokes and in serves.
The volleys are too unrealistic, anyone who knows a little about tennis can only agree.
The animations of tennis players rarely resemble their real counterparts. Watch a McEnroe or Federer or Tiafoe match and tell me if the animations resemble real players.
Are we kidding, 13 years for this stuff??
It would have only been acceptable if they called it top spin remastered or top spin 4.1 and it came out 6 months after 4.
I would like to make an appeal, since I can't stand mediocre tennis games anymore, I volunteer for free to help the developers finally create a good tennis game, I think I could do better than this mess, it's certainly a pipe dream This appeal is a provocation but I'll do it anyway!
Sorry for the outburst but I've been waiting a long time for top spin 5 and in general for a good tennis game (finally) but it seems that this time too I'll still have to wait.

In this regard, I am reminded of a game from at least 10 years ago and evidently made with 2 lire compared to top spin but which however gives it a spin not once, not twice but three times in terms of realism and animations that recall the real counterparts , the game in question is dream match tennis, I repeat that it is an ultra indie game made with little money and therefore with all the limitations of the case, no license, graphics that are not exactly next gen and movements that are not exactly fluid and ball-racquet contacts that are not very precise, but for example if you angle the ball too much, the ball goes out, if in a given situation you don't choose the right shot to make that shot you miss it or you give an easy ball to your opponent, if you play counter-ball it's more difficult compared to waiting for the ball to reach its highest point perhaps taking a few steps back, if you want to play along the line you must not simply aim in that direction but also slightly delay the shot just like in real tennis, if you go to the net a volley half behind the service line will be much more difficult than a high volley at the net, if you look at the animations of ALL the players you can tell with certainty who they are even if they don't have to specify who they are, thanks to the animations that remember in ALL the shots (and not just in some) the real counterparts, the balls bounce differently on each surface and the choice of shots must be adapted to each surface, the ball has a realistic speed and making an ace for example requires a lot of precision, etc etc, ce there are still many other examples like this but I won't go into too much detail, I repeat that it is a game created with a budget of one (at least) ten thousandth of that of top spin but with very little look what they managed to come up with! So it's not true that, as someone says, Top Spin's problem is that it doesn't have the budget of, for example, NBA 2K25 or other sports because if they had given the same money to smart programmers like those of Dream Match Tennis they would have created the game tennis match of the century! An unattainable masterpiece, but unfortunately it didn't go that way and now we practically have a top spin 4 remastered left over from 13 years ago and with all the same defects as 13 years ago...
Well, what else can I say, you're happy to pay 60 euros for this stuff....

I felt Top Spin 4 was a downgrade from Top Spin 3. Everything became so slow and floaty and you couldn't really finish points in a satisfactory way.
Thank you for saying this. I've always maintained TP 3 > 4. Both great tennis games though. Having Agassi in 4 and Sampras was really cool but that gameplay of 3 is spot on and challenging.

I have been playing tennis games since Top Spin 2, but I am disappointed that even after all these years, the gameplay still looks terrible. This is particularly noticeable when compared to NBA 2K. The fluency between each point and the signature play styles or forms of different players are not well represented in tennis games.

This could have and should have been so much better - graphically and the majority of the animations are embarrassing. I was pleased to hear no more 40 ball rallies, but read they will also charge for better animations? What?? Championship serve on grand slam edition???
Roster is shit tho. No Novak and no Rafa. They recruited only Roger and Alcaraz from great players and are rellying solely on them to carry out this gameplay video. I waited too long for a release of my beloved Top Spin game, and I don't think this does it justice. Let's hope I'm wrong and the roster gets expanded.

Played offline career mode with full length games on ps3 on highest difficulty. There was no save game option so you had to prepare yourself for a long hard slog. I could never master the serve to full potential and I INEVER could beat Djokovic

Even after all these years, Dream Match Tennis, a crappy looking game from the 2000s made by a small dev team from Japan, is still by far the most realistic feeling tennis game out there. I've played them all...admittedly even had lots of fun with TS1/2/3 but unfortunately TS and all other tennis sims out there fail to mimic pro tennis...serving effectiveness, returns, hitting winners & errors all feel very arcade like and quite different to how tennis is really played. Tennis has got to be the worst developed sport in the video game world, certain the furthest away from realism versus football, basketball, etc..
Barely indistinguishable from AO and World Tennis Tour. Yet another tennis disappointment. 🙄
this topspin thing is not even close to Virtua tennis 4...while Virtua tennis 3 still has the best gameplay...
Ball looks way too floaty and player models are terrible,Alcaraz does not even look like him and some of the other players shown i could not even tell who they were. AO TENNIS 2 has way better ball movement and even their community cafs are a lot better in player likeness than Top Spin 2K25. 2K SPORTS has really gone backwards in recent years.
This looks like Top Spin 4.5. It would have been OK in 2012 but for today this is just disappointing.
Top Spin 4 looks better
Top Spin 3 is better than Top Spin 4. Casual gamers go ahead and argue. TP 3 is probably the best tennis game ever made. TP 4 is just a dumbed down game with a much more casual gameplay. Tp 4 is still very good though. 2nd best tennis game next to 3.
