    HOLY MOLY I can’t believe you did this with procreate , your sense of composition and storytelling are ON POINT you are truly admirable and I wish one day could learn to do art like this myself

    This is good stuff…It would be great to see a walkthrough video on one of your matte/concept paintings…especially since you’re using Procreate. Most matte painters tend to use Photoshop, so it would be nice to hear some of your techniques and lessons learned.

    Just curious: Why do you keep reflecting the image as you work on it?

    • @AwkwardTurtle10
      @AwkwardTurtle10 5 років тому +8

      So that he can easily reach the other side of the artwork without covering/touching the screen of the Ipad (I suppose)

      it's because you notice the mistakes better when you flip the image. Say you are drawing a character and you think its going all fine, but when you flip the image you start to notice for eg. the right arm is too big, or the hair looks weird etc.

    • @JeremiahCrow
      @JeremiahCrow 5 років тому +10

      Yeah, reversing an image is a great way to see if the composition is good. It should look just as good one way as it does the other.

    • @brockhodge3225
      @brockhodge3225 5 років тому +24

      You’re eyes get "used to" something you’ve spent a long time looking at so the flaws are harder to see unless you set it down for a long time, a way to get around this is flipping the image so it’s immediately a new image to your eyes

    how do you decide what steps in shading and highlighting the colours?
    I know how to do this with real paint or real coloured pastels/ pencils,
    do you make use of the Apple pencil for leaning heavy for darker shading? :)

    • @Artwod
      @Artwod  7 років тому +1

      The Apple Pencil definitely makes it easier to shade things. The sensitivity gives you alot of freedom like a real pencil would!

      Thank you! Glad you like it! It's very easy in procreate. All I did was take a mayan statue picture and distorted in following the perspective lines. :)

    • @michaelkim733
      @michaelkim733 7 років тому +2

      thank you for the reply :) where can i find the distort function on procreate? i just bought ipad pro so i don't know much about it T..T

    • @Artwod
      @Artwod  7 років тому +12

      When activating the Transform tool, press and hold one of the blue dots in the corners. This will activate the distort function rather than simple transform.

      What do you even mean? It's exactly the same steps no matter what hardware or software you use, or even traditional. Learn perspective drawing and values. There's no magic button to make it look 3D.

      he adds another layer under the sketch layer and he most likely uses a huge water brush to roughly add the collor and shading onto the background. I think he added a layer between those to ad details

    I love your art and your courses. You have a great style and you are a really skilled teacher. That being said, when you bring the aztec calendar, specially in a photo realistic way, and not even giving credit, it becomes cultural apropiation. Wich is sad because you are doing all that amazing work and it gets damaged by it. And you don't need that. Plus Im sure you could came up with something just based on. Im sorry I know my comment its kind of a bumer but I think its important to respect the ancient cultures.

    wow, i didnt know you could do this on procreate, is there a limit on the image u can import and use to make the concept?..pretty awesome concept art and painting.. , good job . u sure this was done on the ipad pro? XD cuz..imma get one lol

    • @Artwod
      @Artwod  6 років тому +12

      There's no limit to what you can do with Procreate. There is a limit on the amount of layers you can create depending on the resolution and dpi settings of your project.
      And as a I tell many artists, the trick is mastering the fundamentals, not the software :) In the end you can produce the same quality of art on any platform when you dedicate your time master the fundamentals of art. More about that in my future From Zero To Hero videos :)
      And thanks for the support!

      uhm...that's the point of concept drawing. You don't want to spend 10hrs in an illustration that you will revise over and over again. Plus, doing this allows you to create more "concepts" in 10hrs which gives your client or your boss more options to choose from. After all the revisions are done, you will now have to draw the final output on your own

    • @ws6nick
      @ws6nick 7 років тому +17

      most concept artist use this technique in various industries. Concept art is just that... a concept for the next stage in production, not final art.

    • @LolixBelle

      Ron is a misconception when people think you are “cheating” when you use references or the techniques he used, even professional use references and is nothing to be ashamed about really, in fact I think it makes you a better artist, plus you have to be able to really understand light and color to successfully photobash so is no easy feat, if anyone just does it without understanding how it would fit it will just look bad, I am learning concept art and a lot of professionals do same the same in terms of this kind of techniques, it all comes out to understanding the basic of light and color and a lot of practice and they always tell you to use references no matter what people tell you.
