" If you can't trust that our love can make it one year, I don't understand how we can be talking about forever right now " Peyton basically sums up the whole thing .. Lucas was just too yound and didn't realize how sudden was the proposal.
+Sousou LP OTH Yeah but with distance and time apart you need to be able to rely on something real, not just feelings to know that things are still working, that's why he proposed
Payton always realise stuff afterwards hence make a mess I remember when lucas was watching Nathan and hayley with their son you can tell he wanted that that's y he went to her and she as always master of breaking his heart not ready
I agreed with Peyton. She was right they are only 19. Just because it worked for Nathan And Haley doesn't mean it works for everyone. She didn't break up with him. She just wanted to wait and wasn't ready at that time. They are still fresh out of high school and have to work on what they want in life. If Lucas loved her as he says (which I know he does) then he should respect her decision and wait for her until she is ready. And you can still be committed with each other without a marriage cert. Lucas should have understood and gave more time before popping the question. It's not like it wouldn't have happened. I didn't like Lindsay and didn't think they meshed well together and he sure rushed that with the proposal with her. I think he just wanted to settle down and get married and still was in love with Peyton during his time with Lindsay. Lucas had that problem even with the Brooke and Peyton triangle. When Peyton and Lucas got together at that party where Brooke dared Peyton to kiss him and Lucas later that night said he wanted her heart. Peyton didn't necessarily breaks up with him. She was just scared. And look he jumps dating with her best friend. Lucas just needs to slow down. He doesn't always think rationally sometimes. I could go on and on.
Crystal Ghiraldi I agree completely! I have been Peyton in this situation and I wasn't even 19! Aka older lol.. yes it worked for Naley but Haley loved Nathan so much she was willing to give up all her dreams for him. I actually think it's really sad that the main girls gave up their careers for their men. I mean people do balance love and careers, I wish they had been able to do that.
sweetsecretshayaty Yes exactly! 😊 Haley dropped everything to be with Nathan. I do find that so sweet but I agree with you I do wish that the girls had their dream careers along with being happy with their significant others. I don't know why they can't have both. If the guys can why can't we? Why does it have to be one way or another? But yeah I mean I did feel bad for Lindsey even if I didn't really care for her so much. No girl should go through that with a guy, knowing he is still in love with someone else. I'm glad that Lucas and Peyton are endgame on the show just wish that they didn't have to leave end of season 6, as well. They finally get back together and have a stable relationship.. getting married.. having a child... then they have to go. Wish I could have seen their characters more after that raising their kid and stuff and their first year of marriage. It would have been cool to see that. 😍 I love this show. Haha. I get so into it. Must have watched this series over a and over multiple times haha. It really is one the best teen dramas to hit tv.
After all the thing Lucas did to save Peyton, risking his life and been there for her during hard times. She should have said yes. The problem is that Peyton has always been individualistic, self-centered and selfish. She always rejected Lucas when he needed her. That's why he went with Brooke and Lindsey because they never played games with Lucas and there were more confident in making things happen with him. Peyton was always insecure, depressed, not knowing what to do or what she wanted. Lucas did 100 x times more things for Peyton than she did for him. However, he is supposed to wait more time, cause the little insecure Peyton is not ready. You want Lucas to be an emotional slave, always depending on what Peyton wants, whenever she wants it and how she wants it. He has no voice right?
Hans Frutalo I agree explain to me why she could except or offer to marry some guy she crushed or supposedly fell in love with? but couldn t off the bat except Lucas proposal? she only wanted to marry him after Lindsey agreed because she knew he was seriously trying to move on. I love peyton she's my favorite female character in the show but I was not okay with how she did Lucas but was eager to marry Jake. doesn't sound like she loved Lucas more to me.
I have been the Peyton in this situation and it's no easier for her than it is for Lucas. She loves him. She wants a future with him, but she's only nineteen and she's not ready. If she had said yes it would only have been to keep him happy and he wouldn't have been happy knowing that was the only reason she said yes. This was a no win situation for both of them.
Goosebumps when "where I stood"song starts. No doubt that one tree hill was the last 'old fashion' teen drama with values and amazing character development
That's the best proposal speech ever! Here I am, many years from when I shipped them like crazy, unhealthly suffering through season 5 with Peyton, hating Lucas (not really lol), spending hours at fanforum reading spoilers, foilers, getting into deep discussions about these two lol. I knew they'd always be in my heart but for years I didn't watch one single scene, and suddenly I'm here and remember how much I still really, now healthly, love them! Thank you MS and thank you Hil and Chad! *__*
Alexia C haha I feel you! Naley is my fave, but I ship Peyton soo much!! I just saw this episode, still a lot of catching up to do lol.. actually Jana Kramer brought me to this show (love her music and people in the comments were talking about the show) then I discovered the show and well now I'm just addicted!!
Ok as a younger person watching this I felt like Peyton should have said yes and just had a long engagement and hated her for hurting Lucas but now as an older person, wife and mother I can absolutely understand where she was coming from, she was being totally sensible and Luke was going off feelings and emotions alone and felt the sting of what he felt was rejection. I can understand the hurt where both are concerned but I think Lucas should have tried to be a little more understanding after he had some time to think. Not everyone wants to or should get married really young and this is coming from someone who was 20 and 19 when my husband and I married 13 years ago. When she said if he can't trust that their love can make it a year that was exactly right, they weren't ready to jump into marriage.
Peyton wanted to wait in another year just a chance to find out if she can make her music (dream) and for his book to be published. While Lucas wanted what Nathan and Haley have now or it's goodbye.
I am in this situation right now and I agree with Peyton. They weren't ready and Lucas was proposing for all the wrong reasons. They both love each other yes, but they had different things they needed to do first.
Its 2023, i got back from a trip to Wilmington to visit TRIC and the city and I literally can't stop rewatching their scene. I know every sentence word by word. Its crazy how during 1 minute from 1.08 to 2:07 Peyton doesn't say a word. Shes startled, speechless like she most definitely didn't see that coming and she's definitely not ready but doesn't want to say a brutal no. Lucas on the other hand is deep down ready to commit in this first my Minute and his words are SO touching. it's like he really NEEDS Peyton with him to be alive and enjoy his life. At this moment shes still trying to build a career so both of their goals dont align. But you can clearly see Peyton loves him SO much when she says at 4:00 " i love you SO much" " can we please pretend like you never woke up please" 😭😭 Its like she realizes Lucas immediately felt rejected and she doesnt want to lose him. Im just so mad Lucas left her like rhat without even saying goodbye after holding on to her SO tight during their hug.
I've been saying this for years, but I find Peyton so strong in this scene. She explains her reasoning while trying to assure him that she still wants him, but also explains her boundaries not going back to Tree Hill and knows Lucas well enough to know he'd hate LA. I was never into Lucas, but he always seemed so immature for this. He never made up for it in season five because they have Peyton come back and starts doubting herself or putting her needs last to give him what he wants.
Guys come on, it's a marriage proposal, not a video game. You can't just put it on pause and come back to it later. It's either 'yes' or 'no'. Peyton had her reasons and they're good ones but at the end of that day, "not now" is the same as "no". If it was a woman who really wanted to get married to a guy but he wouldn't propose or he said something like "now's just not a good time for me", half of y'all would be saying she should leave him. Same thing goes here.
Absolutely not because you're literally forgetting that 1) they're literally JUST 19!!! 2) they don't live in the same city?? Makes complete sense to be waiting
i agree, but i think the distance would've broken them up anyway. they were at such different stages in their lives - she was interning and he had this adult job with benefits.
A relationship cannot survive seeing each other only 3 times a year with only talking a couple of days and sharing only a couple of emails and then adding another year of a long distance relationship as Peyton wants. A friendship perhaps but not a relationship. It was better they seperated right there than have the relationship fizzle eventually.
Love and hope are the best things in life , time will run out at some point and not taking this chance was peyton's fault. Only now matters, lucas was right on this one. He did follow his heart and did what would make him happy and that's how you have to live your life.
Peyton didn't say no, she gave a pretty reasonable explaination for wanting to wait. But I also will not blaim Lucas, he realized that he wasn't the long distance kind of person. Only getting to see your partner three times a year can be tough. He needed her with him, but she needed to find and proove herself far away from Tree Hill. I never thought about how negatively connotated Peyton's memories of Tree Hill must be. She was suffering through most of her time there. She came back to Tree Hill only for Lucas, and once she had him back, she turned her back to it without any heart ache. Her reasoning makes total sense, but I also understand that he at that point couldn't carry on like that. Maybe Peyton took his abundance of love for her a little bit for granted and didn't invest enough time and headspace into their relationship, that would explain Lucas' frustration and impulsivity here.
I think the minute Lindsay, read Lucas’s book the comet about Peyton she should’ve given him the ring back and said sorry Lucas I can’t marry you instead of waiting until their wedding day. I think that if Lucas wasn’t using Lindsay as a placeholder waiting for Peyton to get back the love triangle wouldn’t have had to happen like that. Peyton, had every right to be upset with Lucas because he did say that she was great and that they were destined to be together. Lindsay, was only a foot note in Lucas and Peyton’s epic love story she was never going to be the one that Lucas loves. Lucas was just hiding his heart away and like Hayley said stop hiding your heart. Just like when he started dating Brooke the same thing happened.
Peyton, wasn’t being selfish at all I think that she was being completely selfless even when she knew that Lucas was dating his editor Lindsay when he told Peyton years ago that Peyton will always be in his heart and that she’s destined for greatness. He said it to Peyton he said it to the world. I thought that it was quite unfair to put him and Lindsay’s relationship in front of her face knowing darn well that he’s still very much in love with Peyton. So I don’t agree with what Lucas was doing and he has a habit of jumping into relationships just like in season 1 episode 1 pilot of one tree hill. Lindsay, always knew that Lucas and Peyton were meant to be because she spent all her time editing a book that was based on Peyton and Lucas love story. Lucas didn’t want to admit that he was still in love with Peyton because he was being In denial about it. I didn’t like how Haley took Lindsay’s side and not Peyton’s all because she was the new person in Lucas’s life. Lucas, wrote a whole book about how much he loves Peyton.
i don't think it would've worked. he was expecting her to move back to tree hill right away, and she wasn't ready until 2 years later when she realised she hated her job.

I was angry at her in this scene. it seemed she loved Jake more then Lucas if she was willing to make Jake her forever at young age but denies Lucas his with her right at that time. So I am team Lucas on this one. He was well in his right to move on to someone who he thought was better. Peyton played games to much for my liking and she is my favorite female character in the series. She only wanted marriage with Lucas because he was actually moving on from her! she always does the same crap push him away when he need or want something from her! But comes back groveling at his feet when he meet someone new who is willing to give him what he asks for. I am team Peyton\Lucas but she irritated the hell out of me from time to time.

I am team Peyton\Lucas but she irritated the hell out of me from time to time.
marques jones She asked Jake to marry her, beacause she was afraid of her love to Lucas. (He was dating Brooke at the time)
She only really asked Jake to marry her because she wanted a family . Leyton were too young and immature to get married here I’m glad they waited
I agree with you she's annoying really he's always there for her but whenever he needs her shes all in head to toe issues
She should have said yes and then she can talk about
