Outboard motor lower unit oil change - Change your outdrive oil yourself!

  • On an outboard boat motor, changing the gear case oil is easy. How I changed the oil on my boat outboard motor lower unit. I show you how to change your outdrive oil yourself and in this video I'm changing the outboard gearcase oil on my 1985 Evinrude V-90 2 stroke. If you're thinking of tackling a 2 stroke outboard boat engine oil change, it isn't hard to change the oil in your outdrive or outboard engine and if you have one like mine, all you need a screwdriver to change the oil!
For occasional boaters, the gear case oil should be changed annually, and if your motor is older, it should be checked a few times a year. The unit I am working on is an Evinrude but Johnson motors are almost identical and the process is the same for many other older outboard engines. If the prop shaft seals are bad, or there are other leaks like at the drain and fill plugs, plug gaskets, or other more serious issues, the oil will be low, watery, milky, or have debris in it.
Mine was milky and I will need to address the leak (which is probably seals) in the future. If the engine has been sitting for a long time, the water and oil might actually separate where water comes out first, and then oil. That's the most potentially dangerous situation because the separated water could freeze and literally crack the lower section of your outboard or outdrive.
All you need is a big flat head screwdriver, a hammer to tap it (maybe), a drain pan, the gear oil and a pump! I bought the pump and gear oil locally. The only trouble I had was the shape of the top of the gear oil bottle wasn't allowing the pump tube through - so it wasn't perfect.

Thanks Wayne. An older vid.I think what I am getting is white grease from the prop spline. It smells like grease and not gear oil.Tomorrow A.M. I will take out the top screw and dip a twist tie or a zip tie in to see if the color is different. Viewer Darryl in Western Canada (Vancouver Island)

Seems like that's just grease from the last time the lower unit was worked on! Usually if there's water intrusion it will be milky or actually water in there.
