  • In this video we'll take partial inventory of my vintage electron tube collection. I have several tube caddies full of dusty, old tubes and don't really even know what is in them, other than they should mostly be for guitar amps - 12ax7, 6L6GC, 5881, 6550, 6V6, EL34, EF86, etc. But let's find out!

    Brad, what a Great collection of Tubes & The Old Cases, thanks for sharing, i have a Question, What is the difference between a 6L6 G and a 6L6 GC, Thanks, Cousin Figel

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  2 роки тому +7

      6L6G is the old large coke bottle style glass bottle 6L6, which has a lower max plate dissipation than 6L6GC. Considerably lower. Here are the 6L6 tubes in order of date developed and plate dissipation:
      6L6 - 19W metal body first developed in 1936
      6L6G - 19W Glass Coke bottle ,came along after the metal body
      5881 - 23W industrial version of the 6L6G, smaller glass bottle, came along in the 50s, I think.
      6L6GC - 30W, the final iteration of the 6L6 family, came along in the 50s, larger than 5881, but more plate dissipation

    Loved the stroll down memory lane. My father and I had a little hobby in the early 1960's. Trash collection was on Friday and we went Trash picking after dinner on Thursday. We repaired old table top raidos. He taught me how to figure out the bands on resistors and how to test capacitors. Then a trip to the local grocery store because they all also sold vacuum tubes conveniently in the same case as the tube tester. I can smell the heat off the old tubes now.

    I have a bunch of tube caddies you may be interested in. They all say, "Adidastron" on the side.
    You may consider making an inventory spreadsheet in Excel / Open Office. I had to do that with all of my transistors and op amps because I kept buying stuff I already had. It would be a great project for the kids to earn some allowance and as a skill building exercise.
    Thanks, Brad! This was exactly what I needed today coming home after a long week at the old day job.

    You are lucky as hell, I have been wanting a caddy for years, the only time I see them are when they are for sale on fleabay for $3000 with a bunch of tubes no one needs. Probably TV tubes because I mess with radios, reel to reels, record players and guitar amps .I have about 600 to 700 tubes but they are in cardboard boxes and such. I am jealous of your collection. I think part of the problem is I live in New Orleans so after so many hurricanes most of the cool tube stuff has been tossed after getting flooded, especially after Katrina when I lost everything I owned including 10 guitars, multiple tube amps, and lose to 200 old hardcover books. I guess it is what it is. Maybe one day I will come across someone with a tube caddy that doesn't want more than my car costs. cheers!

    We had a Tube Tester at the Pharmacy on my corner. They same Woman still works there for the past 60 years. When I asked her about it Her face lit up like a Tube. She laughed and said "OMG, I haven't tested a Tube in so long. I was the go to Person around here for Tubes and knew all the Sales Reps. I sold so many, you cant even imagine." I'm like really? It's like a load tester when the light bulb bends. You should take it out. You using it would honor it more than it sitting in a rotting trunk. The sands of time only allows some things to survive.
    I bet that tester is dangerous. You should open it up and draw the circuit.

    Hi Brad, I’ve got an 18 watt marshal with a jcm800 preamp from mojotone, I have a set of new NOS 12 bz7 tubes and read they were a replacement option for 12ax7 , but I also read that the heater voltage was higher, would I need to make a mod to run these in the amp? By the way I’ve been enjoying your other repair videos, never hurts to learn new skills.

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  2 роки тому +1

      The 12bz7 is a 12V tube just like the 12ax7. Where it is different is that it has a heater/cathode design, meaning the heater doubles as the cathode. They usually did this back in the day in applications where they wanted the equipment to warm up to operating temperature faster. The amplification factor on the 12bz7 is 100 on both triodes, just like the 12ax7. The pinout is compatible as a drop-in replacement for the 12ax7...BUT only when the amplification stage is not cathode biased or bypassed by a capacitor. So the stage has to be designed as a grid biased stage, NOT cathode biased, like in many guitar amps. This will require some rewiring possibly, but they are usable. A smart guy would redesign one of the new kits to be grid leak biased on at least V1 and maybe V2 to take advantage of these cheap NOS American tubes on the market no one is using.

    • @augustisaacson7903
      @augustisaacson7903 2 роки тому

      12bz7 can make a nice (and economical) phase inverter if you have the voltage to spare, not as good imo in v1 or v2 as the ax7. A quality 12at7 can be magical in the PI position in most Marshall type circuits, everyone should try at least once👍

    There is one in there that is about 8 inches long by roughly 1 1/2" diameter with 2 chambers but the base and pins were broken off long ago. 2 lead wires coming out.
