    Sorry, this may be a dumb thing to get triggered about, so please pardon my autism. But that guy mentioned "milibytes" as the speed unit used by internet service providers? 🤔 Ok maybe im dumb, but im fairly certain "milibyte" is not a used standard in any field of modern computing. I think he's referring to the difference between megabytes (mbps) vs megabits (mbs) which I admit is easy to get confused about, as the abbreviations are close but not intentionally misleading, as one is used to measure the amount you can download (standardized for your harddrive) 1,000,000 bytes of space worth of data, which is only an abstraction to allow people to estimate down/upload times for a file, and megaBITS per second has historically been one if the standards for measuring the highest possible allowed transfer rate thats set by your ISP. I am not sure why those two are used separately for those fields, as one could certainly be used for both, but unless you are incapable of reading fine print, then id disagree that it is a deceitful snake oil sales technique. There are 8 binary bits in a byte (i think?) which i need to double check, but again i think this version of bits is different in context of internet speed 🤔 As for the hard drive thing, that is def a marketing technique, but those who read soecs of hardware they buy should be aware of that.

    The hibernation problems are predominately caused by the firmware of the PC, lots of Windows machines fail to wake up or freeze when you attempt to wake them up. Same story with Linux, maybe it happens more on Linux but I actually doubt it. MAC firmware just works better in that regard. I feel dirty for writing that. :P
    Nvidia... well Linux desktop vs Enterprise Linux, guess which is prioritized. Cuda uber alles.

      An alternative to Piper/ratbagd is Solaar. It supports most Logitech wireless mice (and keyboards? Not entirely sure). It also supports some USB connected but not all. It might also not support all mouse buttons on a given mouse, so you'll just have to give it a go and see lol.
      But, it'll save and restore settings!
      BTW: Logitech Gaming series mice has onboard memory profiles so will not lose settings after reboot. Or so they say... The only Logitech mouse I currently have is non RGB and no extra buttons so I have no way to test any of this. 🤣

      Its interesting to hear how many issues with sleep and hibernation as for the most part I have no issues, and my wife is more "sleep abusive" with her linux systems than I am. I typically only sleep if i will be back within an hour. She will sometimes go days without interacting with machines

    If I could ask the Grey Beards one question .... ? Why do so many UBUNTU derivatives - only post UBUNTU into the Boot Manu (computer drive boot selector) Its challenging if one has a multi drive computer. I'd like to have Ubuntu (Debian) show rather than just "Ubuntu". Linux Mint... Just shows "Ubuntu".

      Simply because the distros didnt bother renaming the boot entry in GRUB. You can do it manually with the GRUB customizer tool

    I use Fedora KDE with Wayland on a dual monitor setup. 144Hz and 60Hz. I have almost no issues. Only thing is, when I start Virtmanager, my taskbar stops working.

    Just a quick note- suspension mode when you close lid works pretty fine now in Vanilla Arch with MacBooks. At least my air2012 && air2019 do the job pretty fine. 2019 pretty close to original macOS.

    Internet speeds are quoted in Megabits(mb) not millibytes(mB).

    • @albertofoti4152
      @albertofoti4152 9 місяців тому

      sorry but the first abbreviation is wrong. Mega is written with a capital M, not lowercase m.
      So megabits is Mb, megabytes is MB, millibytes is mB and millibits is mb.

    The Thing Linux must fix to have ability to worka as a alternative for windows is the main Drivers from the big company's like AMD, Nvidia, Intel ...
    Sec to make somthing like Yast to all disktro so peopel that don't want to use Terminal kan still do everything by Graphical interface.
    BTW I use OpenSuse

      they should develop a mentality that there needs to be cool and polished tools for GUI, that are based on powerful command line programs that masters are still able to access by bypassing the GUI.
      This idea of not having a GUI at all is stupid. BUT, if the GUI breaks or is not powerful enough, then I want to be able to switch to the terminal

      i think most of it is devs not wanting to dedicate time to a gui, but most stuff has a gui alternative or a 3rd party one.@@albertofoti4152

    I think some of you guys mentioned about gnome-power-manager and I've checked and it was not installed by default (maybe because I'm on a desktop and on the debian package site it shows Enablement: laptop ?) - so I've installed it manually and this fixed the issue, that my desktop can only go to hibernate and not into hybrid-sleep state (even, that I've manually edited config files, have tried with packages like ACPI, ACPID etc, nothing really worked).
    Thanks for the advice and I hope this can be useful to somebody else, as well.

    Matt, you certainly picked a hard one for me personally. I really have to think hard. How could the actual operating system can be improved? I agree with Hipdad On the sleep, and I agree about the Nvidia drivers, although I run an AMD card. Also a point you recently brought up about error dumps. But outside of those things I can truly say I'm fully content. Now I would have a lot to say about the the community in the forums, particularly Arch. But thanks for a great topic!

    • @TheLinuxCast
      @TheLinuxCast  9 місяців тому +1

      Technically, those are the display servers, but Wayland isn't really that either. Display Managers are different

    • @cheako91155
      @cheako91155 9 місяців тому

      I kinda think these are all the same thing, XDMCP and the systemd XDMCPServer item... So display manager and display server always refers to the login prompt application or daemon, IMHO.
