I think the novelty of Ice Climber is that it's a multiplayer game on NES where you play cooperatively at the same time and NES games like that were fairly hard to come by.

Time for an old man story lol. Back in 1985, THE GI Joe figure to have was Snake Eyes v. 2 (the classic ninja look with the gray visor and Timber) I had looked and looked but they were always sold out. One day I'm at Kmart with my grandma and after looking through the figures they had, I bought Shipwreck and Storm Shadow (they actually had a Storm Shadow, hard to believe I know if you lived through that era) and she asked if I wanted another one because I think they were on sale for like 3 for 2, bogo basically. I told her who I was looking for and how nobody had him because people were buying all the ones they found, so being a grandma and with the grandmotherly powers of not giving a flip, she walked into their stockroom, found a case of GI Joe figures, opened it up and found four Snake Eyes. She put them all in the cart and said "one is for you to keep and use the other ones to trade people at school". I can't remember who I traded with but I got a Skystriker, G1 Soundwave with five of his cassettes for two of them and gave the fourth one to my cousin for Christmas. Never doubt the powers of a grandma lol
Unironically, I wouldn't mind if they tried Ice Climbers again. Or what if they just took all their dormant NES/SNES IPs and made a new game utilizing all of the characters. I'm not talking about something like NES Remix or World Championships. I mean a modern game with a unique story and gameplay that takes advantage of each IP. Something like Captain Rainbow.
I remember me and my brother being in Walmart's game section when a couple employees discreetly walked right in front of us where one restocked NES Classic Edition while the other employee was on look out. They clearly knew how rabid some people were for those. I think they only put 8 of them behind the glass and the moment they were done, my brother and I looked at each other, and knew what we had to do. We pitched in money together and nabbed one. Very cool game system to have as someone who never really bothered to collect for NES so it was enough dosage of NES for someone like me.
I remember being 11 years old just getting into emulation and so I was getting into the NES library and being really excited for this thing, especially since it used a replica of an original NES controller so it was the closest I would get to a faithful NES experience at that age. It was probably the only thing I played for like a month.
Same, i remember in middle school a guy had a flashdrive with nes emultor and games and downloaded it onto my netbook at school 😭 which i then transferred those files into my flashdrive. good times
This WAS the only thing I played for a month in 2018. My family had just moved into my grandparents house while waiting for our new house to get new carpeting. My Dad got one of these shortly after we moved in, and since our Wii was packed up this was our single source of video game entertainment for six weeks. Held up the entire time.
I know, I love the simplicity of NES games, they're so great to just start up and play, while at the same time not being SO simple that it's confusing like the Atari and Magnavox stuff before it. I still go back to Kirby's Adventure, Mario 1, and even MOTHER because they're just so chill and easy to simply have fun in [even though MOTHER isn't traditionally "fun"]
Man oh man I this was the hypest thing when it first came out. Didn’t partake in it though since I was never much of an NES kid. Now SNES classic edition on the other hand…
Let's not forget about the Nintendo Classic Mini: Family Computer where due to the Famicom having hardwired controllers the mini replicates it resulting in miniature controllers also Japan got one heck of a line-up with Final Fantasy 3 and Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari (aka River City Ransom) to name a few.
I remember just how difficult it was to find one of these. After a couple months of trying to get one at any store to no avail, I just gave up. Didn't want to deal with scalpers. That is until a year later when I'm in Argentina visiting family. I'm in an appliance store with my mom, and I see the NES classic on the very bottom of a glass case, official Nintendo seal and everything. Asked to buy it immediately. I was so happy. I think the SNES classic was announced shortly after I got home, but I didn't want to bother with the chase at that point.
I got lucky getting my SNES Classic. I just happened to be in a Best Buy when they had like just received a new shipment. They didn't even have time to put price tags on them. I asked an employee if they were for sale, and he said they were. I grabbed one before the mob had a chance to buy them all up. Funny thing is that the SNES Classic is pretty cheap on the secondary market compared to the NES Classic. But I do not regret my purchase.
I remember my orthodontist's office had an NES Classic, of all places. It was in a little room where you could just play while you wait (there used to be an iPad with mobile games on it for the same purpose). It was really fun going there for my brace check-up and just flicking on whatever NES game I felt like playing at the time. I remember getting pretty far in Mega Man 2, probably like halfway or more through all the Robot Masters before I had to actually go to my check-up. Sadly, it was taken away when the pandemic hit, and when it re-opened the room was blocked with chairs and the NES wasn't there anymore.
Interesting thing about the NES Classic edition. If you use a Wii Classic controller, the Home button on that controller brings you back to the menu, like hitting reset on the system.
Managed to get the last one at a local Target in holiday 2016 for my dad. He loved it and took it with him when he traveled for work and played it in hotel rooms. One of my favorite gifts I've given him.
at my sixteenth birthday party i had a tv set up outside with this thing hooked up as like a fun little party gimmick and these two guys sat there playing it the entire time
I always use the CRT mode. It's because quite literally that is the way the games were meant to be played. The games were never expected to be blocky. They relied on the blurriness of the CRT to round out shapes. That love for the blocky look seems to mostly come from people who grew up on emulators. To each his own, but that's why they always put that mode on there. And for what it's worth the NES Classic has a pretty great CRT mode.
The CRT mode on the Nintendo consoles is not good. They are just an image overlay that doesn't recreate the dithering effects actual crt's do. I use crt filters on emulators that mimmick the effects of a crt, and I wish these mini consoles did the same.
@@gamerfly101 those filters have some overhead though. Like they probably put a pretty low powered chip in there and proper filters would probably cause lag.
I think the filter looks a little better on the SNES one, since the sprites are "busier" with more pixels and colors. NES sprites are simple enough to look good with the sharp lines.
"(NES) games were never expected to be blocky." Except in the advertising, cover art, manuals, and in the games themselves. Sometimes even the gameplay.
The nes and snes mini hold a special place in my heart. The snes mini was the very start of my game collecting. Soon after i heard the nes mini was bein rereleased. I was lucky enough to find a single nes mini in yhe store after waiting for one to hopefully show up. Was the only one there. It started an obsssion with collecting mini consoles lol Also as someone who wasnt even born when these consoles were around, i love the crt mode. it really puts me in that time period.
I’m glad I was able to get my hands on this. It was so hard to find in stores and always sold out almost immediately but maybe 2 weeks later, I checked target and they had a decent stock for them and bought it in a heartbeat
The CRT mode is because a lot of these sprites were designed with the understanding that CRT televisions would distort the sprites, and some developers worked with that. You compare how, say, Link in Zelda II looks on a CRT to your average HD display, and you realize they were using the limitations to make shapes that looked a lot less rigid than they do without a CRT television (or a filter). Sorry if I explained that weirdly, this isn't really my area of expertise, but I've seen people smarter than me explain it, so I thought I'd spread the message.
I think a good part of why the Mini-Console craze died down was due to... well, once you enter the 5th Generation of consoles, it becomes a hell of a lot harder to emulate the games from there. Saturn, Dreamcast, N64, it's only relatively recently that emulation for those consoles have gotten to an acceptable state, and even then you can see Nintendo still dealing with the nightmare of the N64. This being said I do wish Nintendo would do mini consoles for the Gameboy line.
This also marks the start of Nintendo's modern emulation efforts, Nintendo has an European studio which handles that, and I don't know if that studio handled previous efforts, but since they like to reset their retro library and emulators every generation, the ones the Switch uses started here. And it was good to remember that, the emulation for this Mini console was superb, especially in comparison to Wii U, wished we got a N64 mini console, because that would have forced the studio to make a proper good emulator for N64, instead of the rushed thing we got.
I love this thing. Almost barely used it but it's like Scott said, I have different ways of playing those games more conveniently. But for what it is, it's a fantastic love letter to the NES. 9/10 tech
The mini console modding scene that spawned out of this thing really elevated all the subsequent mini consoles from novelty (or lazy, barely-functional nostalgic cash grab in the worst cases) to legitimately some of my favourite ways to play old systems outside of real hardware, and as a bonus made me much more confident in my ability to get what I want out of RetroArch. The fact that modders even managed to turn the PlayStation Classic into something worth giving a single shit about is still mind-blowing to me given the negative amount of effort Sony put into that thing.
@@FourBudgies87 Who knows, perhaps a fees related issue: or Nintendo considered an extra spending was unworthy, or Konami demanding fees were too high, only god knows. Still, if the Castlevania trilogy was included, the mini NES classic would sold way more faster, more so if the six games of Megaman were also included (nothing against Megaman 2, but my favorites are 3 and 4).
Man, that's bizarre lol. How old are you? The SNES, like the actual SNES I mean, was my family's first console, there's pictures of my dad holding me and my sister as infants under each arm while holding a SNES controller lmao, classic
Damn that's crazy, you're basically an 80s gamer in disguise! My first console was the GBA so I have a lot of appreciation for the SNES as the GBA is basically a portable SNES my first game was even super mario advanced (super mario world)
I think the reasoning behind the CRT mode is because some games made sprites with the CRT lines in mind so the edges would be blurred, so some games look better with the blurry CRT filter than the crisp pixel perfect visuals
My 2nd controller port rusted (bought it 2nd hand). It is extremely difficult to find parts. That's the only thing that kinda blows. And yeah, I modded it. Absolutely worth it for that.
30:00 the nes classic controller worked perfectly for shovel knight on wii u, you have to press select to choose the secondary weapons but that only gives it the mega man feel to it so I didn't mind it.
And here I thought I'd get more than 40 minutes out of 5 different mini consoles when Wott the Scoz here got just under 40 minutes out of 1. That takes some major skill and I think knowledge.
I ended up snagging this thing in a Walmart for a low price a while after the scalper stuff. If I remember correctly, the SNES Classic already released (and was subsequently scalped) by then.
I actually didn’t buy the NES classic, but my sister gave it to me once she already got NES games on Switch online, I mostly play it at parties or when I go to hotel rooms because of its easy connection and also it’s great on a ViewSonic monitor!
My fave accessory I bought for this at the time was an extension lead for the controllers. Wild that it needed to exist, but brought me back to buying the game thing for my GameCube controller so I could sit far away and still have rumble 😅
I feel like if they'd included Mario Bros. Classic Series (the Germany & Italy exclusive one) it would have been a great value-add. That game's awesome. Original NES Mario Bros. not so much.
I was working at Micro Center at the time of its release and my store got 5 of them, but employees were not allowed to buy them. By some miracle my girlfriend came to the store to buy something with her boss, and I had her buy it for me. I always got the playing with power books
Tetris is in rights hell to be sure. I think when the Classic launched, Ubisoft had the exclusive licensing? As for the GenMini version, I think the fact that it was a) unreleased and b) an unauthorized port to begin with (which is why it didn't come out, iirc), meant that there wasn't really a legal basis to worry about since...y'know, it was illegal to start and now 2 lifetimes later, no one at the Tetris company gave a feck enough to figure out a way to challenge it.
The target customers for this device likely wouldn't even remember _Tetris_ as a NES game and would tend to think of it as belonging to the Game Boy. It wouldn't sell this system as the impulse buy for which it was marketed, which is a problem with more than one game that actually DID make it onto this list. Maybe Nintendo's research said _"30 games, bare minimum, and we need them approved yesterday."_
Managed to get the last NES classic at my GameStop back then and I still can't believe I got one since they were so hard to come by. The snes classic was really cool too. The PS classic I won in a MarioKart contest and it definitely came out alright
I still play mine to this very day! I ended up adding a bunch of games to it so that definitely helps keep my interest. I got mine by checking Walmart at 3am while driving home from a friend's house, and they had just gotten two in stock. Kinda regret not buying both of them, but I wanted someone else to enjoy getting one too.
I’ll always remember waiting in line for these things. I was dating this chick a couple towns over at the time, she went to work and I had the day off, saw there was a GameStop nearby and drove over there an hour or 2 before they opened. No one was there yet so I sat in my car. 2 cars drove up and the people got out immediately and stood by the door so I followed as more cars started pulling in. I was the 4th person in line, and a worker came out and said they only had 4 NES Classics total. The guy behind me was super bummed, but then the guy and girl in front of me said they were together and just getting 1, so the guy behind me almost exploded in excitement as he realized he was actually gonna get one. Like his eyes got welled up a bit with happy tears
Modded this with hackchi in like 5 minutes. So glad I got this. Get to relive all the games like Life force, chrysalis, final fantasy, mother, etc. Sure i could just emulate on my pc but man, playing these mini consoles with the controller and on the tv just hits way different. Its modernized original hardware.
One of my favorite things about this release, besides the new controllers for my Wii and Wii U, was the website, it included instruction manuals for every game, but also, new interviews with the developers, revealing information in a similar way to Iwata Asks, honestly that made me really happy, that in a way that continued, then the same happened with the SNES Classic Edition.
The Tetris was originally sold and marketed by the Soviet monopoly on import export of electronic goods Elektronorgtechnica. Following the end of the Soviet Union it continued to be a public organisation until 1996. When it privatised the rights went back to the original designer who set up the Tetris company to licence the game. From what I understand of soviet commerce in the 80s Alexey Pajitnov would have been entitled to set up his own company to sell Tetris within the Soviet Union except that he had programmed the game while at the Soviet academy of sciences, which made the game property of the Soviet government. This is not so different from how in the West if you coded the game on company time the game would belong to the company. Honestly trying to read up on the history of Tetris at this time and who owned what and where royalties were going is an absolute minefield. Just as confusing as Western corporate mergers even though there's only two parties.
I love CRT mode as someone who doesn’t have the space for a CRT! Old games were made with CRTs in mind, and they provide a softening effect that many games were made to make use of. There are some “effects” are made to make use of the dithering of CRT, for example to create transparency or effects like waterfalls in some older games. And even if I did, it’s nice to have if you want the convenience of playing old games on a new TV.
The NES Classic was awesome - honestly it felt like it was only missing ONE thing that would have really put it over the top compared to any other "classic" out there, and that's fullscreen mode. "Why?" you ask. "Why would you want to stretch out your picture"? It's because a mode like that isn't designed for a 16:9 TV - it's for the retro enthusiasts Scott has mentioned that have a 4:3 CRT television. I've got one with an HDMI port and another one with an adapter; I can take the Genesis Classic and full screen mode basically turns it into the same picture I had as a kid, but the NES and SNES classic crushes the image into a tiny vertical strip in the middle of the screen.
I found my NES and SNES Classics in a tiny hole-in-the-wall retro video game store in my town on a whim one day. I bought them immediately. There was no way I was passing them up because the first time I was in the store I stupidly passed on a complete in box copy of the original Dragon Warrior complete with all its manuals for $70. I don't know why I did that. I kick myself for passing that up. To this day, that was the only time I ever saw the Classic systems in person. They have one flaw though. How hard would it have been to put a simple reset button on the controller itself? Given that resetting the console is how you get to the menu to save your state, it's silly that they only put it on the console. So you have to sit there with the console right next to you. So you need a really long HDMI cord in order to play on a couch. You sure couldn't play with the short cables they put on the controllers. lol
CRT filters/modes are by far my favorite way to play/emulate all games up through Gen 6 consoles. With a little bit of 3D bevel curved around the edges, it's just a lovely way to play, especially since I dont have a CRT television (though I grew up with them, so I know how close the filters get)
Man I love Punch-Out so much. Everything about that game has so much charm. The music, the gameplay, the different fighters, the little training scenes with Mac running. What a great game
agree, it has aged so well since it is so unique... games like the original zelda are charming due to how archaic they are but i'd actually enjoy flipping on punch-out and trying to clear it
*great video sir! It is a fun unit to have & play! In Holland people had to pay $10 extra in Europe so it was the ONLY country to pay $70 for the unit which was pretty outrageous & one stinking controller* ⭐️
I’m divided on the Nintendo classic consoles, but I’m leaning towards the NES Classic since its collection represents the console, having games people played all across its lifetime. Because there were so many good games for SNES, there were so many difficult picks and exclusions, and it lead to a half popular games/ half historic games sort of bunch, but in fairness it does have games people did want to play, yet I do dislike having a collection like this on a plug and play console scalped at high prices.
I feel like the issue with Tetris is the Tengen version which is pretty universally accepted as the superior NES Tetris game; but being unlicensed and the lawsuit around that version.
Yeah, if you're rolling the dice on the U.S. market, they'll probably remember the Tengen black cart second, the Game Boy game first. The gray Nintendo-licensed cart? A distant third, if they remember it at all. Much of the U.S. market of the time likely thought Tetris was a Game Boy exclusive during the NES era, because it was the release title for the Game Boy. I don't think it would sell many of these devices.
Been playing this a lot lately, making my way through Kirby Adventure and messing around with some other games too. It's a great package, but I do hate the one Controller in the package (Vs 2 for the SNES Classic) & it's short cord, the lack of a Rewind feature (also a great addition to the SNES Classic) also stinks. However save states make this thing great anyway, and it's still an excellent mini console. Great video Scott!
I played both of the consoles but my nes classic is the reproduction one it’s the one that was re-released and I had fun snes was my first Nintendo mini console and I’m glad I have them, I do wish they would release a n64 classic that would be cool
28:34 Is exactly what I did when this and the mini snes came out. I went to Best Buy intending on it being an impulse buy, then when I saw what games were on it, I took a picture of the list. Then I went home and downloaded them(except star fox 2 obviously) on my modded wii.
I got an NES classic as a christmas gift in 2018 when I was 14, and it's one of the best most nostalgic gifts I've ever gotten. It furthered my interest in romhacking and retro gaming.I am now a game developer =]
I remember going into the electronic section of my local Target store back in holiday 2018. I discovered both a NES Classic Edition and SNES Classic Edition on the shelf. Knowing they would both be gone if I passed them by, I splurged the ~$130 to get them both. I haven't played them much, but it's nice to simply have them just in case the desire kicks in.
Regarding the CRT mode, it actually makes the game look better; you see, these pixelated graphics were designed with the scanlines and blurryness of the crt tvs in mind. So, the game actually looks smoother and prettier with this, as opossed to having the sharpest pixels possibles ok your 4K tv, which only makes it look worse
Just watched the Wii Classic podcast episode and gotta say this feels like learning that new show you watched just realized a new season after you finished it
I got one when they reissued it a few years later, 2018 or 2019, I think. I missed out on the SNES one 😪 Why did they make so few of both classic editions? The demand was super high.
I was lucky enough to buy two & got one from a friend for Christmas. One I got modded out with over 180 games. One of the coolest things Nintendo ever released.
In japan there was also a limited edition gold version of the famicom classic with shonen jump games on it, pretty neat device. Im really glad eventually they put the games on the nintendo online service.
i was so lucky to get the NES classic edition from a local game store and while the price was high bc of resale, it ended up being a modded nes classic that has all if not the majority of the NES library, in addition to having another controller and two extension cords. Best deal ive gotten
Oooh finally a retrospective in this. Nice. I actually don't remember much about this other than the basic (It's a small NES obviously) and I never bothered investigsting much, so it'll be nice to watch this
I honestly he was the reason why Limited Run bother to remake Plumbere Don't Wear Tie. I bet you that they wouldn't have considered doing it if the Nerd didn't make the game well known.
Kinda funny you didn't mention the PAL version of NES Mario Bros. (I think it's called "Mario Bros. Classic"?) that *did* fix the controls and made them more like the GBA version where you actually have mid-air control
I bought the NES classic at the alongside the SNES classic at launch, the first time I was able to play any of the classic Nintendo games. These were my only systems along side a Wii. Several years later I’m concerned about the picture quality of a CRT for my recently purchased NES, making sure my Wii U I got in 23 is nicely polished and giving Nintendo money for games that haven’t realized. Good play Nintendo.
can't wait for the NES Classic Edition Classic Edition
@@srridk It'd be the size of a 50¢ machine capsule toy with full size controller. 3 games.
@@bcj842 and the games would be Mario 1, 2, 3, and bonus game of Urban Champion
That's essentially NSO now.
Contains 3 games! Including Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3 and The Legend of Zelda!
Doncha mean the NES Classic *Deluxe* edition/NES Classic NANO?
I think the novelty of Ice Climber is that it's a multiplayer game on NES where you play cooperatively at the same time and NES games like that were fairly hard to come by.
the BEST were the Nintendo VS consoles that had like 10 games built in.
balloon fight's cooperative / versus multiplayer is great too

That’s me lol
No joke, my grandma somehow managed to get this for my birthday back when it first came out and it was notoriously hard to find.
The power of grandmothers
hopefully yours wasn't also a Chinese knockoff spread around when they were hard to get😔
Time for an old man story lol.
@RowdyRodimus I too love American propaganda 😍 #wholesome
I mean, I know it's small and all, but is it THAT small!?
Ice Climber is the greatest game of all time and I can’t wait till those lil guys make their 3D debut as a launch title for the Switch 2
I’m more interested in a chibi-robo revival
Incorrect it's dig dug 2
This could actually be cool
Eternal Darkness II
2 Eternal 2 Dark
Unironically, I wouldn't mind if they tried Ice Climbers again. Or what if they just took all their dormant NES/SNES IPs and made a new game utilizing all of the characters.
I'm not talking about something like NES Remix or World Championships. I mean a modern game with a unique story and gameplay that takes advantage of each IP. Something like Captain Rainbow.
Regarding Simon's Quest: 8:46 "I don't think anyone can actively say 'aw man, that game is bad.'"
AVGN would like a word with you
I remember me and my brother being in Walmart's game section when a couple employees discreetly walked right in front of us where one restocked NES Classic Edition while the other employee was on look out.
I love core memories like this
I remember being 11 years old just getting into emulation and so I was getting into the NES library and being really excited for this thing, especially since it used a replica of an original NES controller so it was the closest I would get to a faithful NES experience at that age.
So you're only 18 or 19 years old now eh? Man I'm old
40 minutes long video about a thing I still regret not buying?? Thanks for the birthday gift, Scott!
happy birthday man 🫶
happy birthday broski !
Happy birthday fellow Scott enjoyer
The Famicom version is a lot cheaper and more easier to get. I got mine on Amazon for around 60 dollars
Sad birthday 😈
I don't have a modern Tv, but a huge old CRT, so I use an HDMI to CRT adapter to play with my Classic SNES. It's PERFECT.
Man oh man I this was the hypest thing when it first came out. Didn’t partake in it though since I was never much of an NES kid.
Now SNES classic edition on the other hand…
I've almost sold my SNES Classic twice! I think it would be something I would regret for the rest of my life. Glad I still have it.
Let's not forget about the Nintendo Classic Mini: Family Computer where due to the Famicom having hardwired controllers the mini replicates it resulting in miniature controllers
also Japan got one heck of a line-up with Final Fantasy 3 and Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari (aka River City Ransom) to name a few.
How much did you pay for it?
@maxalmonte14 I think it equaled about $70 usd, but I don't remember exactly
@@grillm4ster damn that's not bad, especially for a real one in Argentina
Not bad
Isn’t the wire for that even shorter? Classic Nintendo move in that case 😂
Managed to get the last one at a local Target in holiday 2016 for my dad. He loved it and took it with him when he traveled for work and played it in hotel rooms. One of my favorite gifts I've given him.
Scott doing a mini rant about how he likes legal pads was kinda cute
Not gonna lie, I kinda want some legal pads now

He likes legal emulation and legal pads. This guy's not going to jail.
Illegal pads aren't as absorbent
Just like Kim Wexler in Better Call Saul? I think im gonna be sick🤢

Ice Climber is a classic. I literally grew up in the 80s and absolutely stand it right up next to Bubble Bobble
ehhhhhhh
I hate Ice Climbers. Wrecking Crew or Mach Rider are more enjoyable. Ice Climbers is a chore to play.
at my sixteenth birthday party i had a tv set up outside with this thing hooked up as like a fun little party gimmick and these two guys sat there playing it the entire time
I still have the NES and SNES Classics.
Modded the fuck outta them.
Image Scott rambling about his carpet, rather than something on his carpet.
"(NES) games were never expected to be blocky."
Except in the advertising, cover art, manuals, and in the games themselves. Sometimes even the gameplay.
@GoblinSquid the developers' colors and intent with composite blur proves otherwise.
Can yall believe It’s been 8 years since the NES classic came out😂
I could swear it came out in 2015, but I guess I just misremembered.
Damn.... it doesn't seem like 8 years, holy crap...
@@EsThirt33nSame here.
Seems hard to at first but then I remember I was a kid when we got ours. Am 18 now
Nes classic classic
The nes and snes mini hold a special place in my heart. The snes mini was the very start of my game collecting. Soon after i heard the nes mini was bein rereleased. I was lucky enough to find a single nes mini in yhe store after waiting for one to hopefully show up. Was the only one there. It started an obsssion with collecting mini consoles lol
Also as someone who wasnt even born when these consoles were around, i love the crt mode. it really puts me in that time period.
Now bring us the N64 mini, Nintendo!
Second this!
I got one of these as a present and had a friend mod the entire nes library with select famicom games. Still one of the coolest things in my house
Notable Missing Games: Ducktales, Tetris, Dragon Warrior III, Bionic Commando, Crystalis, Guardian Legend, Blaster Master, Battletoads
Castlevania 3 also deserved to be included.
@@Gridseeker Was very confused that they included Simon's Quest instead of Dracula's Curse.
Faxanadu is another that would have been nice to have.
When are we getting the Scott the Woz Classic Edition, with 30 classic Scott the Woz videos poorly emulated on an ipod 4
The NES Classic Edition was my family's first console, lol. 10/10 would start fights over player 1 again.
My first console was the GBA so I have a lot of appreciation for the SNES as the GBA is basically a portable SNES my first game was even super mario advanced (super mario world)
>Sega went through the effort to get Tetris on the Genesis Mini
*Sega does what Nintendon’t*
6:28 This is the moment Scott discovers paper
He’s right tho. They’re cool asl
5:06 Great game, and really underrated.
There needs to be more mini consoles.
The problem seems rather that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of types available for sale, and most of them are terrible quality.
I think the reasoning behind the CRT mode is because some games made sprites with the CRT lines in mind so the edges would be blurred, so some games look better with the blurry CRT filter than the crisp pixel perfect visuals
But it looks like shit, nothing like a real crt
@@KaitouKaiju Eh, depends on the emulator. Some emulators have a great CRT filter, while some just put some lines over the screen and call it a day
Zoda's Revenge is the one where Mike could move (and jump) diagonally.
I still have mine! It's a cool little piece of history.
Fun Fact: it is the smallest version of the NES that Nintendo has officially released.
Mega Man 4 is the best of the 6 games, but 2 is the most iconic.
0:30 Two "The Dark Age Of Nintendo if you will" jokes in the same month😮
25:22 "Give me more!" [Like button lights up.]
These videos remind me a lot of Classic Game Room and I'm all for it.
Nostalgia am i right!!! Do you remember Mario? I remember Mario!
I remember...
Hell yeah I remember that guy!
The red guy from donkey kong?
Modded this with hackchi in like 5 minutes. So glad I got this. Get to relive all the games like Life force, chrysalis, final fantasy, mother, etc. Sure i could just emulate on my pc but man, playing these mini consoles with the controller and on the tv just hits way different. Its modernized original hardware.
I enjoy scanlines in my retro games, as long as it's done properly.
One of my favorite things about this release, besides the new controllers for my Wii and Wii U, was the website, it included instruction manuals for every game, but also, new interviews with the developers, revealing information in a similar way to Iwata Asks, honestly that made me really happy, that in a way that continued, then the same happened with the SNES Classic Edition.
im glad to hear scott’s worst year of his life was 12 years before he was born
I brought mine to a family get-together with some of my dad’s side of the family sitting down together for Tecmo Bowl. They loved it!
There's a Tetris company now? Man, the Soviets really did lose the Cold War.
There has been since the Soviet fall
Gorbachev appeared in a Pizza Hut commercial
>Implying there were any Council Republics left in the 80s
I love CRT mode as someone who doesn’t have the space for a CRT! Old games were made with CRTs in mind, and they provide a softening effect that many games were made to make use of. There are some “effects” are made to make use of the dithering of CRT, for example to create transparency or effects like waterfalls in some older games.
And even if I did, it’s nice to have if you want the convenience of playing old games on a new TV.
one of the best things about these mini consoles were how easy they are to mod as well
Managed to get one. Modded it to hold every official NES game on it. Love this thing.
I think 2017 was around the time I stopped believing in Santa. Making this the NES classic like the final thing I ever asked him for.
I managed to snag one and I absolutely don't regret it. Love the little thing, even if that controller wire is abominably short.
Given that retro enthusiasts were not the target market here, but rather nostalgia-driven impulse buyers, it may not have been cost-effective.
Finally, so happy to be alive to witness a Scott's stash video on the NES classic edition
With a little bit of 3D bevel curved around the edges, it's just a lovely way to play, especially since I dont have a CRT television (though I grew up with them, so I know how close the filters get)
"Oh man, I love Ice Climber!"
No you don't. :l
That fucking killed me.
Man I love Punch-Out so much. Everything about that game has so much charm. The music, the gameplay, the different fighters, the little training scenes with Mac running.
What a great game
Will or Nes
@@murderman8578 Both are great, but I'm talking about the NES one here
agree, it has aged so well since it is so unique... games like the original zelda are charming due to how archaic they are but i'd actually enjoy flipping on punch-out and trying to clear it
Can’t wait for SNES classic video Scott 😂
I love my nes, snes and sega mini. Wish the nes mini came with two controllers.
Adventure Island and TMNT Arcade were a mainstay in my NES as a kid.
I'm csomeone with bot mini's that uses CRT mode religiously with these... I love the look of it.
Oooh finally a retrospective in this. Nice. I actually don't remember much about this other than the basic (It's a small NES obviously) and I never bothered investigsting much, so it'll be nice to watch this
I like to think Castlevania 2 was included as a secret tribute to AVGN.
I was wondering why I knew so much about Castlevania 2 despite never playing it. Now I remember, it’s because of the nerd
I honestly he was the reason why Limited Run bother to remake Plumbere Don't Wear Tie. I bet you that they wouldn't have considered doing it if the Nerd didn't make the game well known.
*the black sheep of the series*
