    Watching this because watching my multies for several hours tonight wasn’t enough. 😂. I started with 7, now I have at least 20 free swimming fry. I can’t get enough of watching them.

    Why do you need to remove the fry for maximum yield? Do the parents eat some of the fry?

  • @FishTankBarn
    @FishTankBarn 5 років тому +2

    Nice Video at TM Aquatics! In most of the other shell dweller videos that I have seen, the fry are just left in the main aquarium. Is there a benefit in yield to removing the fry.

    • @TMAquatics
      @TMAquatics  5 років тому +4

      Ocellatus are aggressive and will often kill and eat the fry, unlike Multis, which is the common shell dweller most people think of. They are also much more territorial. I’m sure some would survive, but it would be a much lower percentage. Since my focus is selling these for profit, which I then reinvest back into the fish room (equipment, food, more zebra plecos, etc) removing the fry is the only thing that makes sense. There is no benefit to leaving the fry in the tank. By pulling, I maximize yields, and can get much more food to the fry, resulting in better growth, healthier fish, and quicker sales. This video is really geared towards hobbyists who want to make the most coin from breeding. 😉👍

    When you've emptied the shell of fry, do you give that shell back to the mom? If so, what does she do? If there is a fry left will she resume her guard? Fascinating vid Tom. Really enjoyed learning how to pull these fry. Thanks for sharing.

    • @TMAquatics
      @TMAquatics  5 років тому +2

      Yes Bob. She usually checks out the inside of course, the usually starts to rearrange the shell. In some cases she’ll abandon that shell and claim a new one near by.

    In Sydney Australia it was a effort to find the shell dwellers especially Neolamprologus similis, but finally got my hands on them and love them.
    my colony has now bred several times so I will be looking to spread these little gems out for others to enjoy as much as i do.

    Very helpful. How long can you keep those fry in the box?

    • @TMAquatics
      @TMAquatics  4 роки тому

      That’s relative to how large the spawn is. I keep them in as long as possible so I can target feed. Usually a few weeks. Then they are moved to a larger grow out tank.

    • @dennisgoingplaces
      @dennisgoingplaces 4 роки тому

      TM Aquatics Thanks, Tom! That makes sense. I guess one avarage spawn per box? And would the fry be large enough to sell after a few weeks? I don't think my wife would be happy with another tank. :)

    • @TMAquatics
      @TMAquatics  5 років тому +1

      Multifasciatus are easy yes, but many struggle with Ocellatus due to their aggressive behaviors and tendencies to kill and eat fry.

    Why don't you let them grow with the parents?

    • @TMAquatics
      @TMAquatics  4 роки тому

      I do when I run out of grow out tank. Otherwise I remove to maximize yield. Some always get eaten or killed by the adults if I leave them in. Since my fish room is a breeding for profit fish room, I want as many to survive as possible. The females also come down on eggs faster when I remove the fry.
