Since a lot of people are mentioning it, I just say it right here.
Yes, I was kinda wrong about including the Sega Genesis logo above Sonic CD, since the game actually played on the Sega Mega CD, which is an add-on for the Sega Genesis though. Sorry for that and thanks for watching! 🌟
I am SO thankful that Sega included this retry feature. I always failed these stages so I always used debug to clear the games. Thanks to the retry option, I can get all the emeralds/time stones with no issues. I already suck at 2D Sonic so this is very helpful.
Yeah, it sucks getting that near last one but not to toot my own horn.
I got all the time stones on the Sonic CD PC release. ^.^
Well, it's more headcannon than sega
@SMD88 because that can only mean that you didn't have a life back then in the 90's
skill issue
For me, Sonic 2's Special Stages were actually tolerable this time around because of the smoother framerate.
Me too but I’ve seen a few people who have never played sonic 2 saying that the special stages suck.
So much easier to see the bombs
Yeah. It was still hell for me. Luckily I played in anniversary mode so I could just restart the stage and just do the same 2 checkpoints. But some emeralds took… more tries than I cared for…
@@cmrobbins88 u got to study the patterns
For the uninitiated, the Sonic 2 special stages in Sonic Origins do, in fact, use polygonal 3D graphics that would not have even been technically possible on the Genesis
(Edit: I’m told that 3D polygonal graphics were used in some titles. Regardless, 3D graphics are now used where they once weren’t)
That’s what I figured, looked like a way to clean 3D effect for a upscaled pixel art
It's noticeable, and actually welcome
@@Cobaltios very welcome. The originals were way too hard purely because of technical limitations
There's a breakdown on how the special stage 2 was made on genesis. The improved special stage 2 looks really darn good.
Amen
The widescreen and the 60 FPS really brings something extra, can't wait to play his legendary games again with better quality!
It is definitely legendary to play these games again in this masterpiece
No
@@omegafala720 Sorry but given what sonic has become now, we can't hope for better :x
@@WizardHandle For having finished the game in all percent on Switch, I encountered very few bugs.
The only thing that really stuck with me was that Tails gets stuck and keeps making endless jumping noises.
For the rest I find the compilation quite correct, even if I very much regret the replacement of the music of Sonic 3
@@c2po_production same here, although tails constantly jumping is kind of annoying thats the worst bug i've encounter, the games play pretty good.
People need to know that these were impressive back in the day of the genesis era
1:52 fun fact in the remake these special stages are fully 3d
In Sonic 2 on Android the special stages are also in 3d
@@OnlySamskk It's the same
Its interesting but at the same time its a bit weird, all the other graphics are untouched and pixelated, that halfpipe its the only smooth updated graphic
I definitely prefered the smoother style of the Special Stages from "Sonic The Hedgehog CD" ever since I played the Xbox 360 version, though they are still rather tricky and hard to beat without having to constantly retry over and over due to how unpredictable the UFOs are able to move when trying to destroy them.
I actually got all of the Time Stones in Sonic CD and the Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 2 for the first time thanks to this collection. Usually I would go after a few, get frustrated, and give up, but thanks to the smoother frame rate and control, I had a much easier time getting them. The retry feature also really helped, especially with Sonic 2.
Whomever thought about adding the coins feature is a genius...
It so weird seeing the special stages running smoothly at 60 fps after playing the original versions for so many years. lol
32 years old and have never completed sonic 2 with collecting all the chaos emeralds I found it easier on origins and as well as using the coins to re try this game has brought so much joy to me being widescreen and just remastered again I hope they make sonic mania 2 with remasters of different levels and remix’s of the classic tunes like in sonic mania
In the other reviews i had trouble noticing the differences, but here they're clear as day. Thanks for the video Daniel, good job :)
Sonic origins is very smooth
Smooth criminal
So is rouge

Don't forget the Mobile Port of Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and Sonic CD is exactly the same as Sonic Origins. This is SEGA's officially ported widescreen support, enhanced graphics, and smooth visuals, by using the Mobile Ports that they released in 2013. Even though Rubberduckycooly did the unofficial port of Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and Sonic CD decompilation. And released them to be ported on PC, PS Vita, and etc.
Taxman/Christian whitehead: ya I know I MADE THE 1,2, AND CD VERNION
Yeah but I wish Sonic Origins had remastered music made by Christian Whitehead and Simon Thomley
I will give this one a go.
As a kid, I was amazed by Sonic.
Sonic 2, it's sequel, had high expectations and it delivered.
Sonic 3, had even higher expectations, and I was thoroughly let down. I was so disappointed with the game that I didn't want to spend my paperboy money on the Sonic and Knuckles extension. So glad I did, cause combined, that game blew my mind. I spent the most time on that one and it was my absolute favorite game in the series.
I really believe releasing the Sonic 3 half of the game alone was a big mistake. It just felt short. I know Sonic 1 also only had 6 zones, but there being three acts in each made it feel much more substantial.
origins is exactly like the mobile ports in terms of smoothness, though the physics are kinda wonky in s1 for origins lol
As someone playing most of these games for the first time now, I ask: how the hell did anyone beat these bonus stages on the Genesis?
With training. Failures and repetition. I had a lot of free time with 8 years old in 93(yes I got my genesis almost at his life span end).
Sonic 1 was fairly straightforward. Sonic 2 was impossible haha. Sonic 3 wasn't too difficult.
They are not hard. I found somewhat harder the UFO stages in Sonic CD, but don't remember why.
The really HARD special stages are: Sonic 4 episode 1 (a harder version of Sonic 1 special stages but this time there are 7 special stages and you can turn into super sonic) and Sonic 4 episode 2 (a harder version of Sonic 2 special stages and I cannot even manage to get emeralds 6 and 7).
skill
Me lol. I just learned all the stages and went through!
Having grown up with the Genesis versions, seeing Sonic 1 and Sonic 2's special stages so smooth is kinda cursed.
Pretty smooth. I've had and easier time getting emeralds in Sonic 2 than I did on the Genesis.
The 7th emerald was always quite tough on original hardware.
Same here. It was almost a cake walk.
yeah except the stupid tails don't jump the bombs
@@MCJeffsy hell nah. That was way easier than the 6th. You just had to learn the platforms.
I hate how the music doesn’t go faster as the gameplay gets faster in origins
Sonic 1 Original Special Stage: runs fine but small screen
Sonic Origins 1 Special Stage: same but big screen
My computer running Origins: **screaming in agony**
Isn’t Origins for Nintendo switch?
Yes but I got it on my laptop@@iamonemillionindebt
Yeah, those 3D islands :\
It takes so much computional power because of denuvo
@@t0biascze644 Denuvo?
if they can do this in special stages, I hope they also did the same when in normal stages. like how smooth the movements are in Sonic Mania.
oh well, I'm sure mods out there will do the job.
Wym the movements? Like the character animations?
Mods Do what Segadon't
I just realized that in Sonic 2 prototype, Sonic's sprites are way smoother than the release or Mania
@@0_zsR yeah but they’re also kinda uglier in my opinion, they still have that trademark American mowhawk and Sonic is short and pudgy like in Sonic 1 instead of his cooler, leaner body in Sonic 2
What do you mean "normal stages"???
Nice transitions between games
Back in 1992 my brother had managed to collect all 7 emeralds in Sonic 2, and it was a big "WOW" moment. It took a lot of attempts and a bit later in the game (Mystic Cave Zone) to reach Super Sonic. To be honest I kinda wish they had kept the actual jumpy framerate special stages in the "Original" versions.
1:05 Shouldn't it say "Sega CD" instead of "Sega Genesis"?
@@Poga_2000 Ok, you got a point there.
Looks the same which is a good thing! Good video as well!
The sonic 3 special stage never looked that jittery before, not even on my Mega Drive 1 now.
The draw distance for Sonic Origins Sonic 2 special stage is poor, you can see empty pipe in the distance particularly when turning. 😳
Otherwise Origins looks worth getting, I love the buttery smooth animation..
Dawg tf are you talking abt. Ur rlly reaching rn
You're in denial man get over it. It was that jittery when we was playing on genesis.
Yeah it truly was that jittery before. It’s just that when the games were brand new of course they didn’t seem so chalky but now we’re spoiled with 1080p 60fps minimum graphics lol
Even when you play it in 4K, it'll be still jittery. So cool your tits bruh.
Maybe it didn't look that jittery on a CRT TV.
I've collected all the emeralds throughout sonic 3 and Knuckles and got to be Hyper Sonic. As a kid that was so sick.
I honestly didn’t notice the improvements because of my tunnel vision focus of trying not to mess up getting the Chaos Emeralds and Time Stones.
I'm loving the improved framerates, weirdly made the special stages feel a but trickier for me as I wasn't used to the smoothness, looking forward to the patch they are working on to iron out the bugs
Never thought there was any problem with these special stages not running smooth enough on a Genesis. It is of course ice if they improved on the smoothness, but for me to buy this game for this insane price tag I would have hoped for more. I would have a bare minimum wish for modern graphics. You should have the possibility to choose if you want to play with modern graphics or in "retro-mode". I think Wonderboy Dragon's Trap on PS4 got it right!
when I first played the sonic one special stages I thought the bumpers were buffed meaning they would push you back further but I guess it was just bad luck
Especially Sonic 2's special stage looks wonderfully smooth & softened in comparison!
I'm surprised how much I miss the alternating SFX for Blue Spheres turning into rings. Origins uses just one.
I’m used to the original special stages in Sonic 1 and 2 so I kinda prefer the genesis versions. They fit with the rest of the game better and I just appreciate how the original pulled them off with such limiting hardware.
Except for the special stage in Sonic CD, the remake for that one is just straight up better lol.
I see you're a fan of Dorkly by looking at the font of your profile icon. You watch Sonic for Hire? 😁
I know about Dorky, but my profile picture is actually not inspired of him. But yeah I watched couple of videos from him, including Sonic for Hire.
Coming from someone who played Sonic 2 on Genesis recently, I feel like that both are great as they are. The 60fpm and the 16:9 works wonders for modern gaming while the original 4:3 and ~20-30fpm gameplay has great nostalgic charm and challenge.
It's like mobile the Sonic Origins version
Mobile: Hey, I’ve seen this one!
Sonic Origins: What do you mean? Its brand new.
(tails and knuckles too)
It uses the same engine as the mobile version.
I have a Heart Attack while reading that
if that happened it would cost money and very expensive, if on other platforms it is 24 dollars (well in my country it is expensive)
Impressive how smoothly or not sega genesis were fast than Origin’s, blast process for sure 🤣
I actually found the special stages harder due to the increased speed, but it certainly feels better. The only complaint I have is with Sonic 2, it's odd how there is still 'pop in' for something that easily should not have any at this point since it's not running on an engine that the Genesis could use.
In my opinion I think the sonic 1 special stage is worse than it was in the original. Sonic feels totally weightless (which I guess is the point of the stage) but they make him feel slippery on top of it. At least in the original you can take time to articulate your jumps and make sure sonic goes to where you want him to.
The upgraded Sonic 2 bonus stages might be my favourite thing about Origins lol
My only complaint with the Blue Spheres in S3&K is the tempo of the music doesn't increase which is jarring from playing the game so often growing up.
Thankfully, an update to the game has rectified that.
Very, very smooth !
Sonic3&K blue spheres song speed up is not found in game.
First anomaly
Second anomaly:
The song doesn't fade out like it did in Mania and like it does in other special stages in Origins, it just stops
Third anomaly (admittedly minor, but still worth mentioning to me):
the Chaos Emerald sound is the sound that plays in Sonic 1 and 2, rather than the one they used for Sonic 3 & Knuckles. There's a comparison video for the sound difference, and once you hear them you can't unhear them
Edit: added a comparison
ua-cam.com/video/HkDvPD0IoCI/v-deo.html
I remember it being buttery smooth when I played these games 30 years ago.
cause 20 fps was considered smooth
i realize now what was the issue i had with sonice 3 special stage in origins, something about how the FOV and that fisheye bowl effect is creating is giving me a lot of motion sickness
were it really never happened on the original game for me.
Are you an dragon slayer? 😲
Just like the mobile ports, well S3's special stage seems to be based on Mania's special stage, when it comes to smoothness.
They finally unlocked that blast processing 😂
its probably because i grew up on the OG versions, but i prefer them over the touch up'd/ anniversary versions
Sonic Origins : I'm the only one who is so smooth !
S1F/S2A/S3AIR : Did you miss me ?
AND OBIVOUSLY, THE ANDROID VERSIONS !
Oh good, the Sonic 1special stages will no longer give me a migraine.
Damn, they made the Special stages in Sonic 2 3D? Wow.
Christian Whitehead did good on the remake
Really smooth
feel like this credit is to the mobile ports origin is based on. that's how i played all these games and they looked just as smooth
Similar effect can be achieved in the original game by removing one line of code or using Game Genie/Pro Action Replay codes.
Just comment out one line of code from the source and you get the effect. It's pretty wild
I thought he said mania so I was surprised when I read origins and the game looks this polished
In a bizarre twist of fate, I didn't fail the Sonic 2 special stages even once. Because they're based off the mobile version.
Sonic CD for Genesis? finally
On the Genesis you need to buy a Sega CD to play Sonic CD.
1:06 It's Mega CD/Sega CD, not Sega Genesis. Genesis didn't have the computional power to run "mode 7" graphics
Technically its sega cd but the sega CD was an attachment to the sega genesis
I wonder why in Sonic 2 you can still see the pipe popping in - in the distance.
It says genesis, where it should say Sega CD for the sonic cd special stages. (I mean to be nitpicky, I could say that these are running on European/Japanese Consoles, where the localisation is Mega CD, and Mega Drive.
The fact that they can make smoother animations for special stages but not sprite rotations of the playable characters going up hills and loops
The ones on the right are fan made which is why they didn't do what you say they did.
how did the sonic 2 special stages get off sync from each other? they started at almost the exact same time, but the genesis side finished almost 7 seconds sooner
Sonic 2’s Bonus Stages on Genesis back in the 90’s.
“So, if I play with Sonic and Tails, I can increase my chances at getting an emerald since he can hold rings as well. That will make it so much easier!”
*The Bonus Stages*
“Gah! Dang it, Tails! Stop hitting the friggin’ bombs! Why are you taking so long to follow me Sonic?! You move like half a second after he does. Perfect! Now, I’m starting to hit them cause I’m losing focus on Sonic while paying attention to you! Oh, great! Now I don’t have enough rings! 5 rings short, Tails! 5 rings! Thanks! Great help you were…”
Ok look, I can somewhat understand why they decided to have the upgraded versions of these games in the classic mode, but isn't the whole point of having a classic mode to have the game as it was originally released? To not being able to drop dash, spin charge in Sonic 1 and CD, to have the framerate cut in half so you can experience the games in both versions and appreciate the changes made in the remasters even more?
Sure, Sonic CD being played in the original hardware is a pain but man, it would've been a nice option to play both versions
Does Sonic 2 still have the online multiplayer that the mobile version had?
No, it has only offline multiplayer.
For some reason I really dislike that bonus stages in sonic 2 being rendered in full 3D it just makes me uncomfortable 😂
Would you rather have original bad special stage control movement plus hardly any eye frames when hit a mine or smoother control plus smooth graphics scrolling
@@mk8-mkwil117 theres absolutely no logical reason behind why I dont like it, so yes I'd go for the original crapy version.
Original is always Better.
@@mk8-mkwil117 The original Sonic 2 special stages were made with the Genesis in mind so those special stages were never meant to be 60fps which is why it's harder to get all the Chaos Emeralds in the original Sonic 2 cause the 30fps and 3D sprite scaling are suppose to add challenge to the player. In 60fps it took away the challenge making draw distance more clear, control functions much faster, and render the stages less challenging. Sure it plays smoother but that's the issue, it's not suppose to be smooth. It's like if you play Resident Evil and it's more darker in the original but then you play the remake and all of a sudden what's dark and hidden in the atmospheres aren't dark and hidden anymore. That's not an improvement, that's just spoiling the game.
1:06 man literally destroyed special stage 3
Is amazing
Special stages give reprieves with the coins that’s used to buys items in main menu The game in general is a remaster almost in the same way as sonic colors ultimate in anniversary mode and the games story mode
About Sonic Origins, it looks same like 2013 remake (And also Sonic CD 2011 remake)
Not a fan that the fadeout transition goes from a burning sun to just plain white ..
Wow, Genesis versions actually look a bit jarring compared to Origins. It's a welcome upgrade for almost all. But that Sonic 2 Special Stage just doesn't look right lol. I've spent way too much time on that for that huge and narrow tube to not look awkward. Although I assume I'd get used to it fast. And the Blue Spheres even turn a bit a smoother, which will likely give less of a headache when doing those all day. I'm holding out on the hope of a physical release eventually but if this goes on sale for Steam's Holiday Sale I'll prob pick it up from the patience wearing out. Excited for mirror mode too, it just seemed pretty expensive for what it is. This comparison helps make it feel more worth it, though
nice!
Comparing to the original sonic 2 stages to me the original seems to do it for me , it's like when it went out of style to use a camera on a track for certain scenes in movies
You should've compared it to the CWH Mobile ports
I know it's chronological, but 1 might not've been the best place to start the comparison...
This is because they just took the Headcanon remakes of the games.
[Also, how did they mess up the booster sound in the CD Special Stage?]
Sega hired them to make those games and then screw some of them up.
they somehow made sonic 1 more nauseating, amazing
In the original Sonic 2 special stage's was terrible when your playing the later stages when it gets harder and harder you can't see where your going and what's coming up ahead of you I always preferred Sonic 3 and Knuckles blue spear stages there more fun to play.
I do find sonic 3 blue sphere stages the easiest, but what annoys me is the delay you turn coz to me it always feels like when press left or right you've got to get in the right moment especially when it starts goes faster, you've got to be really really quick
Damn
dang S2 genesis sonic is thicc
I realized,
Its not gonna take me awhile to get used to the fact that S3&K's special stages don't get faster, but I do think that its dumb.
If they would put an option where the S3&K special stages would go faster like they did origin-aly that would be nice.
I'd think it would be off by default tho
I notice a slightly delay input on sonic 3 & knuckles blue spheres.
@@OctoGirlthystX57 Sonic turns when he reaches the corner of a square
They do get faster...at least they did for me, but...they've felt a lot easier for me now than when I was a kid. Hell I got all the Chaos Emeralds b4 Marble Garden Act 2.
I am the only one that hates those bonjs stages with the blue and red balls?
is it smoother than the android version?
It's exactly the same.
you can no longer do the "dont move" strategy for the pink emerald in sonic 1.
also the half pipe takes some getting used to in origins, as someone who has all the emeralds on zone 1, act 2. plus I found that if you restart a level, you keep the emeralds you have and can use the special stage markers again. so you can just keep redoing the first level and get them all without using coins if you don't want to waste them.
@@chibogoro2329 does this work for sonic 3k also 🧐🧐
@@nerd5
Nope, giant rings don't respawn even after restarting a level. I guess it only works with Sonic 2 because checkpoints need to be reset, while giant rings do not.
This is the Christian Whitehead special stage port aka the tax man in stealth
2:07 Looks like my Scratch UA-cam videos. 💀
(Genesis Version)
wow smooth like in mobile
I really hope Sonic 2 special stages are better. It was nearly impossible to get the chaos emeralds in that game and I always had to use cheats. I always thought Sonic 3 stages were the easiest. I’ve collected all 7 chaos emeralds as well as all 7 super emeralds to become Hyper Sonic.
In the half pipe one, I think I prefer the original. The newer one looks all nice and smooth and that, but there's something about the pre-rendered background animation that just has a certain charm that is lacking in the full 3D version. Perhaps an option to reduce the frame rate to emulate the original look could fix the issue?
But the new one controls better
the new one has better draw distance
1:06 Excuse you?
All of the games in this except for 3 and knuckles feels like they imported the Christian Whitehead mobile versions and made a few improvements
That's...... because that's the case. Those are literally the mobile Versions remastered.
Because they did
Why is the new game a lil slower compared to the originals? Did they forget about Blast processing already?
Sonic 1s Special Stage reminds me of the sperm trying to fertilize the egg
Sorry to be boring but in Sonic CD you put sega genesis and not sega CD, but still good video, they were 100 times smoother and better in origins
Do the Mobile Ports vs. Sonic Origins
There are 99% no differences between mobile ports & sonic origins.
@@DanielDX I agreed that there is not difference in the Display, Graphic, and Smooth Visuals but there is a difference of the Music between Sonic 1 & Sonic 2 2013 Mobile Ports vs. Sonic Origins Anniversary Mode because the Mobile Ports have Enhanced Music & Origins have the Original SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive. Sonic 3 & Knuckles music is completely different because they use the proto music on Origins as the same as Sonic & Knuckles Collection for Windows 95, cutting out the original music with Michael Jackson involved.
Isn't the sonic 2 special stage in sonic origins ripped from the mobile port
The whole Sonic 1/2/CD games in Origins are in their entirety ported versions of the mobile remake.
The sonic 2 special stage almost looks wrong with how clean it is
