  • I don't learn languages just to be able to carry on a simple conversation. I learn languages in order to become familiar with some aspects of other cultures. That is how I learn, and it is the reward at the same time.

I would love to be a polyglot. I never thought I could learn even one other languages. But now I'm on day number 13 (jour numero treize) learning French. You are such an inspiration. Merci beaucoup.

For those of us with only one or two languages under our belt, discussing the options for learning and perfecting 13 languages seems like magic! I too, am learning more languages for the pleasure of other cultures' literature, music, film, etc

Love your vids. Thanks for the shorter timeframe. There is so much to do. Thanks again. You might mention what learning languages does for the brain. Only music, (my thing) has the capacity to unite the brain like learning languages does. Pretty amazing!!!

Some great insight Steve, Korean is my 4th language and I have similar reasons. Chit chatting with store clerks and waiters just isn't enough for me. But I have been thinking about if it is possible to successfully learn a language without really feeling a connection to it. Korean to me is fun, and extremely useful because I live here, and of course it makes my life richer as an expat, but do I connect to it like I have with french and and arabic? Absolutely not. I may flesh out these ideas in a video. What do you think about this idea Steve? You quit learning Korean years ago, did you miss that connection?

I am new to Korean and the culture. I enjoyed even the brief contact I had with Romanian. All cultures interest me.

I totally agree, learning languages open the doors to complete new cultural universes. Sorry for the off topic comment, but the new Next / Previous lesson buttons are awesome!! Would it be possible to have those available for the mobile apps too? Cheers!

      @Thelinguist  10 років тому

We are working on improving the mobile apps as well. I will ask about this function specifically.

OpenS doors, with an "s". Learning languages opens doors.

Yes, I know. I realized about that mistake too late. Thanks for your correction.

Carlos, There won't be next/previous buttons, but the new app makes it much easier to see all the lessons in a course and move between lessons in that course. It's probably something we could look at in the next couple of months

I like your videos and the way you emphasize the study it from a cultural and historical view. And I am wondering how you select what language will you learn next? It is just "random", or you plan it long before?
Have you checked out Hungarian? I'd be curious how you get along with it. :)

I would like to ask for your opinion. Recently a book club was formed at my school i know because my friend is in it.
For quite awhile i've been interested in learning languages. So for the last few days i've been thinking about forming a language learning club. For people who want to learn languages but don't want to learn by themselves and maybe see if someone else wants to learn the language they want to learn to help learn the language like maybe split the cost for book on learning there target language or something like that.If there is s no one who wants to learn the same language as them they can get support from other learners to help with motivation instead of quitting because it got hard. But i don't think too many highschool kids care for language learning.I think there might be a few but i don't know.I don't really know how to set it up to where it might be effective to help people learn by themselves and/or with friends instead of going with just a teacher telling you what you need to learn.
i want it to be where kids can ask what other people are doing to learn a language tips methods things like that but to where everyone actually trying to learn benefits.
Do you think i should try to make the clubs and if so what do you think i can do to make it better.
I also looked online for stuff about this but i found nothing..
Sorry for the long comment and sorry if its a little hard to understand but im not used to commenting on things like this im not very social.i typed this once but just before i finished my computer acted up so i had to retype it and I think it got a little messy.I also looked online for stuff about this but i found nothing useful.

Interesting since Kim Youngha attributes this to Martha Graham in 1990. I wonder when Nike came up with their slogan.
