My New OPEN ISLAND Ant Farm Didn't Go As Planned

- With my new and budding scientifically important ant colony, a species called Meranoplus bicolor which we discovered to be present in my country, now outgrowing their setup, the ants were ready to move into a new and better home. I created an epic forest-type open-concept island terrarium for the ants to live in. However, things didn't exactly go as planned after moving the ant colony in. Hope you enjoy this week's episode. I think “The Spades Island” would be a good name since it belongs to The Spades colony.
I think the island should be called "Heart of Spades island!" ? Maybe?
I was thinking "The Secret Oasis" might be a good name. Considering that these are a new species, it would be like only this species exist in this small island surrounded by sand

I would recommend putting the talcum powder on the outside of the bowl as well in order to prevent invasive species from getting in.

I think you're tempting ants easily escaping regarding these open-concept terrariums. Some of the decor and plants are a little too close to the outer rim of the outside bowl, and also, I think the sand being so high may be used to escape, too, since it looks like they could easily make a hill that could allow them to escape. The outer bowl just seems too shallow to contain them with how you decided to decorate it.
Yes and the plants will grow out. I feel bad putting the best colony in an unsafe set up. Really hope we can keep them for a long time. 🙏
I think the name of The Spades new terrarium would be "The Little Garden" because they are cute and small and the terrarium is cute and small yet a garden-like setup.
I was thinking Garden as well because that is where you find spades.

When expanding the territories you should just add the island to a bigger bowl, that way you see the rings(like a tree) growth of the Colony.
The current home of the Spades should be called The Starter Deck, to go with a Card theme.

I was worried that it was gonna be the ants climbed out of the terrarium using the test tube, since it seemed to leaning against the side of the larger bowl.
I saw that earlier, was afraid they would climb out onto the table. In some places of the video, you can see ants on top of the test tube.
My suggestion for the name of the setup is "The Aceland", it kinda sounds like "island" and matches the card theme (spades, ace)
You know Im worried that all of these open concept ant colony setups are such a high risk that for some of your more rare species you should maybe consider a more sheilded enclosure rather than an open concept.

I think that a good name for the terrarium would be "Mystery Garden" because of how the nest is hidden next to the rock
My daughter and I think “ the little wood” would be a fine name for such a picturesque little starter home.

This is why ants are awesome, they are unpredictable and its well kind of random like a simulation and its amazing!

Seems pretty not random to me. They chose to burrow into a spot that had a lot of cover and line of sight breakers so that their nesting hole could be discreet and not out in the middle of the open where any old predator could see and get them. Very intelligent and resourceful creatures if you ask me.
I'd be worried about them stacking the dry sand up to a point where they can get over the edge of the outer bowl.
pssst, don't tell the secret escape plan of the ants because it's secret.
I would love an update on these little ants.
I respect their choices of burrowing under a hard structure. This is a added layer of protection to the nest and something that as a landscaper I’ve noticed they tend to do. Unfortunately this can also cause massive problems ad over time they can literally undermine structures. This is often the reason for pathways sinking
You called the colony "The Spades" so names for the home could be "the dig site" or "Treasure Island" (since they hid their nest entrance so well)
The plus side to the set up as you currently have it is that when the colony grows more and needs a bigger set up you can simply build their new terrarium and time the move with when you would normally replace the barrier so you can simply place the bowls in the new set up and watch the ants move into the bigger space.
I think it should be called The Oasis as it is a little island within the desert sands.
I'd call the terrarium "The Ace" so it's "The Ace of Spades"
Island name suggestions:
Spiny Island (because of the spines on the worker ants)
Cliff Outlook (because of the rocks that lookout onto the sand)
The Secret Oasis (someone else suggested it, but I liked that name as well so I added it)
Island 555?
Island of cards? (Cause spades)
Forest island?

The terrarium kind of has an Desert Oasis feel to it with the dry sand on the outer ring. So maybe name it "The Oasis"?
It would be neat if you put tine lapse on a colony whilst they're feeding or relocating
I agree. I was thinking something similar, that way there's no guessing where they went, and it would be a cool way to study their movements.

I thought the same but it's position hadn't changed at 8:22 but you'll notice it leaning against a rock not the glass bowl :)

You should put water around the island so its actually an island
Honestly, the green part surrounded by sand instead of water reminds me more of an oasis than an island
Just keep an eye to the ants making gravel bridges with the sand to try and escape. My fear with these open concepts are always that we can't be ther 24 hours to check on them, and they can try to escape easily.
I would protect this terrarium a little more. Leaving it completely open with such an important species of ant makes me a little nervous. As for the name, I saw "secret oasis" in a comment. I think it's a good name.

What kind of protection do you have to keep pharaoh ants and black crazy ants out of that setup? We've already lost too many colonies to invaders to risk the spades, too
Oh great point, the barrier would drop the invaders directly into their home with no way out.
@@ReaperEOD A month or so back he had ants invading a setup and were able to cross the barrier, it is now the colony that lives in the bottom of an ant tower that is housing a different colony. A comment I read before yours suggested putting this entire setup inside another bowl or tray that has water. That sounded like a great idea.

I was also thinking years back to a couple small colonies in his old apartment that were wiped out, plus his first attempt at raising termites as well. Yours is a great example people won't have to dig too far back to find

I genuinely thought the ants had escaped at first because of the way you placed the test tube against the side of the bowl, giving them an easy way out as they can climb on it (also some of the plants look a little close to the edge). I’m sure you know what you’re doing more than I do but it just looks to me that they could easily escape if they really wanted to, but clearly they have no reason to right now as they have all the food and water they need. Great video as always!
I thought they had used the white sand to escape by piling it up against the glass to make a ramp. Was happy to see that didn't happen.

YO I JUST GOT LIKE, THE BEST IDEA EVER. for the spades’ forever set up, I was thinking to do rolling hills, with a GIANT SPADE with digging medium inside for the ants to nest in, the nest opening somewhere at the bottom (that way it look like the ants are coming from behind it). The twist is, ITS ALL MADE OUT OF, OR ROCK MADE TO LOOK LIKE PLAYING CARDS. Their feeding dish can be cut down or rock made to look it is made out of card from the suit of spades. [the giant shade painted black]
