Very insightful documentary. I thank you for such a very unbiased and humble outlook on Selim. You have done Selim proud with this one. Such a shame I never got to witness them live. I will always regret being unable to attend his rituals. What a remarkable and talented human being. Amazing family as well, to support his decisions with such selflessness, very rare for families to be so supportive of suicide. So moving.

I will always recall my 6 hour conversation with Selim, Farida, and the Insolitude guys with fondness. Such an insightful and intelligent, interesting dude. No bullshit.
I saw them on that tour also. Insolitude, followed by The Devil's Blood, followed by Behemoth. That was a great fucking night. Alrosa Villa, Columbus Ohio.They've recently demolished that venue, so now it all lives only in my memories.
GREAT documentary on a man I greatly respect. Not exploitative neither voyeuristic , just FACTS and VALID opinions with the people who knew him best ... very good indeed - I couldn´t praise this post any more. THANKS !!!

The fact that erik danielson is sadly emotional means a lot how big this guy was, he could be a king in a world of fools but he took the quick way out. I met him once during a concert in the baroeg, i wore a roky erickson shirt and that happend to be his fav band. I got backstage and had some nice broodjes kip, got a EP and tshirt. Great guy.
Erik was even close to sobbing. Incredible.

A respectful documentary. I was not that familiar with nor him.or the band, heard of them and a few songs only . It is hard to accept a decision like that, specially for a parent. His mother must have been a wise woman

it's kind of surreal he kind of echoed the feelings of Jon from dissection about reaching an end point and completing his purpose. Jon wasn't depressed, but still kind of surreal.
it was really powerful seeing Erik that moved by it.
one of the best metal bands I've ever heard.
I think he and Jon read the same book and believed in the same things. They believed in a cult that praises killing yourself at the peak of your spiritual development so your spirit is strong as it goes to the afterlife.

Selim was so fucking amazing, just a brilliant musician, that solo on that he plays on at Superskum with Watain on Watars of Ain is probably one of the best guitar solos I have ever heard, what a gift to music he was. Let alone The Devil's Blood, as a musician myself I'm in awe of his legacy.

Is it my imagination or Erick Danielsson is about to cry almost at the end of his statement, I know he is still a human being like every one of us after all but I never thought I would see that kind of feeling on this guy
He is, SL and Erik were very close friends.
I can imagine, I never meet him in person, but I'm a very big fan of his music, and still, the day I found out that he was dead, I felt terrible, almost sad...
Death and loss are still painful for even those who keep themselves near to it. I think for people like Erik and Selim, it might even be even more so because of their intimate spiritual connection to it.

There will never be another, such an amazing talent. The one thing they don’t really get into is that musically, they were so badass and unique. I don’t consider the “album” that came out after the thousandfold epicentere a real, true album as it is very incomplete. Everything prior to and including thousandfold.. is remarkable. I’d been a fan of Iron Maiden and guns and roses, and never expected to hear a good band that have strong elements of both in their signature sound, but here we are! I will be forever grateful to UA-cam for suggesting this!
I agree. The band was falling apart on the last album and it shows. I never could listen to it because you really feel it in the music.

@@anschn7166 his last project was really peaceful, and I think it's because he already decided to take his own life and felt peace in that, which I understand because I've been there. It was so different from the devil's blood. Like he turned hippy in his last days lol. I never actually listened to Faridas band.

I know that E (Watain) thinks of crying as a strength, rather than as a weakness, but this is the first and only time (so far) that I've actually seen him in tears.

Reviving the Ancients Yes, in an interview for Sweden Rock Magazine some years ago. I don’t think you can find it in English or online at all for that matter though.
I didn`t see him saying that (and in which context), but i would say that is very true. Since crying is a soul, not ego thing. Things that are called weaknesses by ego, are in fact strengths of the soul. And if you are real you, you cry when your soul is crying... you don`t care if it`s accepted by society or not. So crying in front of others (much more for men, i would say) is a sign of strength and true spirit and not the other way around. Freedom requires courage.

I see a lot of comments here lamenting Selim's depression and explaining it as the cause for him not willing to live. To your information: Everyone has the right to do with his or her life what he or she wants. Selim did whatever he wanted to do and had peace with it, and we should all honour his decisions. He left us with some legendary music, a music that has a message for all of us, and I feel that this message still has not been fully understood by many of those in the comments. He provided us with hints at the truth of the universe: nothing lasts forever, all will succumb to time, chaos, and death. It might as well be better to act as the subject and not as the eternal object, suffering from decisions we didn't make. Rest in Chaos, Selim. Praise to your life, praise to your death. F°ck all humans, hail the spirits!

For me, who has basically no reason to live on, the real struggle is to withstand all inner and external attacks this struggle is reason enough and a real free man , spritiualy, should face these forces with a fatalist smile. Banish any inner snaketounge that promotes earthly removal, instead, fight back and stand your ground, be reinforced by the attacks. Because its our enemies we serve, not our allies, if we commit suicide.

I still find his suicide somewhat shocking and am stunned how his family reacted to it. I wondered if he considered that he didn't have to go through with it? Probably.
Nope, they were always totally aware of how he felt and thought. He was completely open with them.
They kind of treated it like terminal cancer. They enjoyed the time they had left with him as much as they could.
I know it sounds kinda fucked up, but chronical depression is really horrible, they knew he didn't enjoy anything and he tried a multitude of therapies, none worked. Same as with cancer at some point you stop going to chemotherapy and just accept fate.

Één van mijn persoonlijke helden. Niet alleen muzikaal. Hoe eerlijk hij in het leven stond, siert hem echt. We zouden allemaal een beetje meer als Selim moeten zijn, de wereld zou een mooiere plaats zijn, daar ben ik echt zeker van. Ook ik ben chronisch depressief en al dat taboe daarrond altijd is vermoeiend. Er zijn nu eenmaal mensen in het leven die niet gelukkig zijn met wat er op deze aardbol allemaal gebeurt. En ofwel ben ben je hypocriet en verzuip je verder of je zegt waar het op staat en toont je ware gelaat. Je kunt niet alles wat lelijk is verbloemen. Gelukkig was zijn muziek wel te verbloemen, zelden bekijk ik muziek echt als een kunstwerk maar bij the devil's blood klopte iedere penseelstreek. Je moet wel een beetje van harde muziek houden om daar echt op die manier over te kunnen nadenken. Het enige jammere aan het hele verhaal is dat met zijn dood een van de mooiste kunstwerken in mijn leven mee begraven is waardoor ik het nooit echt heb kunnen beleven zoals ik dat wou. Maar ik respecteer dat dat een deel van de boodschap is, dat ondanks dat muziek voor altijd zal blijven bestaan, het gevoel van de belevenis maar zolang ter beschikking is als de kunstenaar dat wil. Nu is het alleen nog een herinnering, maar da's oké. Ik ben alleszins al blij dat ik deze muziek überhaupt heb mogen leren kennen en dankbaar voor alle deuren die er daarna open gegaan zijn. Of hoe ze zelfs vandaag nog een inspiratie voor vele bands zijn. En voor vele mensen.

You´ll need to do some more reading on what The Devil´s Blood was actually about then. TDB was more black metal than most black metal bands ever will be. Selim practiced what he preached, whereas most black metal bands these days seem to use Satanism as a facade to appear mysterious. it's quite a sad sight, really. Besides, he was not just ´friends with Watain´s singer´, Selim was their live-guitarist, he wrote and recorded guitartracks for their Lawless Darkness album. In return Erik has written lyrics for The Devil's Blood as well. If you put Watain and The Devil's Blood next to each other and delve deep into their lyrical and musical contents, you'll find they are both very much alike.
@@MforceArts i dont know the band or the guy so ill take your word on the lyrics and ideology (going to pass on your recommendation to read up on them as i dont particulary care about the man and the music is, to me personally, just kind of annoying really). I do know what black metal sounds like and this is not it. If the very incarnation of lucifer himself made rap music, that would not be black metal either. And theres nothing inherently wrong with that. To me this just sounds like some female fronted heavy metal band. Even if they are more "real" satanists than many black bands. Im not trying to bash anything or anybody here but i stick to my original comment
@@svendebruyne2057 Fair enough. To each their own, of course. However neither Selim nor anyone else in TDB ever claimed that they are black metal. Of course they aren't. To me, what they are is Rock 'n Roll in it's purest form; and let's not forget that rock 'n roll in it's primal form is and always has been the Devil's music. This is where my comment about them being more black metal than most black metal bands comes back. The core of those two genres very much share the same origin in it's true form. Over the decade that diabolical essence has faded drastically. Especially now that we're in an age where there's literally thousands upon thousands of bands. But I believe that is also what made TDB special, Selim was able to tap into that essence. And I think that, especially for people who share the same beliefs and ideoligies, that's the reason they feel so attracted to their music.

...i 've been listening to the heaviest bands since i was a teenager...i'm 48 now...bands like Mercyful Fate and Venom and Roky Eriksson and Slayer ...i never got confused about Satanism and all that crap...u can just enjoy the music...what is terrifying about this good video is that his sister did not try to make him change his mind...it is such a pitty...the guy was not free ...he thought he had the final word...satan and all that crap had the final word...such a tragic loss.!
Its complicated man. Selim had the right to do with his mind and body what he wanted to, like all of us do. Selim had a serious illness that couldnt be seen. So did his father.
I was angry at him too for a long time. I cant be so selfish anymore. I'm just glad he left some music.
hi there, i'm going to have to disagree with you on some things here, and i normally never do this but.... you.... and your "opinions"😒👎. the man had depression, that was ultimately what caused him to want to end his life... even if you've experienced depression, you don't know what it's like to live his life, so i think making a judgement about his choice to commit suicide is a little bit silly. i think his family is amazing honestly, what good does it do to try and make someone change their mind? he might feel like his family didn't understand or couldn't handle it and might stop talking about it with them and just sort it out privately. his family loved him and respected him enough to to accept be present with him during troubled times... i don't think his suicide had anything to do with satan...🙄 (no disrespect intended with the emoji's, i'm just playing.)

I disagree the the statement that Satanism was the driving cause of his suicide. He suffered from depression long before he fully embraced Satanism. If anything, I feel like his Satanic religion extended his life and gave him the fire he needed to produce the incredible music he left behind. Satanism or no, his death by his own hand was most likely inevitable.

kirkelie666, they show an absolute decrease in depressed people's brain activity, which results into a lack of serotonin, which plays quite a role in normal human functioning, as well as other problems. At some point a depressed brain can become so affected by the disease that its owner will lose any contact with reality and start hallucinating nonstop. Such people are often diagnosed with schizophrenia and schizophrenic depression and only when all kinds of antipsychotics fail to work, it becomes obvious that the hallucinations and mania are of a different origin. I have seen such patients myself. Their brain inactivity goes so far that hormonal treatment doesn't even help or brings only an insignificant relief and such patients have to undertake EST or TMS.
@@kirkelie666 you evidently have no idea what you are talking about. Depression has to do with chemical imbalances in the brain, a medical condition like Diabetes or cancer. It runs in families, cannot be cured, only treated with varying degrees of success(or not)... I have been dealing with Depression & PTSD most of my adult life(I am 53 & a disabled military veteran). No one would ever think to tell a person with cancer "oh, snap out of it - you just want attention - you can if you really want to", etc. Depression is NOT a choice.
And now he is burning in hell! He should have accepted Christ as Lord☦️

Every once or twice a year I come see this interview to pay respects to Selim. It gets harder seeing the interview and how the Mother shows her body expressions because deep down I know she regrets not getting help for him. He is a Legend and needs to rest in chaos.
