  • We continue our journey through Jutland in Denmark and we visit Ribe - the oldest town in Scandinavia. Andre's kitesurf attempt gets shut down in Rømø and after a brief cycle around the 'bilstrand' (car beach) we decide to leave the island.
    ABOUT US:
    Welcome! We’re Andre and Lisa. A married South African Italian couple, who have been travelling together for almost 20 years, to more than 40 countries. In 2018 we gave up our professional careers and all our personal possessions in order to explore the world as full-time nomads.
    Over the past year, we have travelled through 11 countries in Europe with our 20-year-old Motorhome. We’ve now started our journey south from Scandinavia, planning to travel the length of Italy with our sights set on reaching Morocco by the end of the year. The shortly shown, top of a pole is telling the higth of flodings of the area during many years! And as seen from the top of the tower, this is a flat area, only made safe by a huge, long dike by the coast, making it safe from flodings further on.

      😁😂 Karen's are everywhere to be found. Funny thing is we thought that she's an import from slightly further south. Although she claimed to be 'from mainland Denmark' when we asked.

    Lots of rules and regulations - impossible for anyone to keep on top of that - even for Danes. So a Dane would just continue having a good time and ignore the "beach captain". Personally I always ask to see a badge and a gun - but I understand that for tourists - especially the civilized kind try not to offend the locals. However there are limits. When the the sun is shining and the wind is blowing - and You happen to have a kite....go for it. I am sure the birds and the fish will forgive You. Never mind about one butthurt person - she probably thought You were Germans anyway .... 🤣

      Love this comment 😁❤️However, as guests in a foreign country it's important to us not to only respect laws and customs but also to represent out 'type' of travel in the best way possible. This is not always easy, as 'tourists' are simply grouped together - no matter who behaves poorly. By the way.. that lady did think we were German 🙂 Even better, she was a German expat who relocated to Denmark years before. But once again, with the right attitude we were able to engage in a positive way with her and to her credit, she was actually very pleasant and understanding.

    It's been at least 12 years since we were in Ribe, Nice to see they still let you park in the town, Thanks for showing the tower (church), we never went up, I think it was closed when we were there.
    We nearly owned a dog there, Bit of a story, but basically a Dutch van we parked near us at Ribe they drove off one morning without thier dog, The poor chap, just sat where they had parked, so we asked him to stay with us,( I went over after an hour), We were debating what we should do, maybe keep him, phone the police, then about 3 hours later the Dutch couple came rushing back, They had driven for over an hour before they realised they had forgotten thier dog, Anyway all was good, they thanked us and went on thier way, this time with their dog, Ribe always brings that memory back 🙂
    Great stuff and agree with Andre, hence why we try to keep away from the masses The van is perfect for that, So easy to get a feel for somewhere or someone and start the engine and move if need be, sometimes just a few hundred meters is enough. Safe travels guys.

We are based in France where our home is. Great stuff from you guys and so much like the wife and I travel around.

      We have a short sit lined up in a couple of weeks and the list of 'must do's' is WAY too long for the time we will have 😋Will be nice to have some cats for a bit to play with! Sweet spot for a sit is probably about 2-3 weeks. Longer than that we get itchy.

    • @WeWillNomad

      @@WeWillNomad Thanks, I've had a look at them. I like the idea that you can both use just one bike if you wanted to. And you can go get some supplies with them and leave the van where its parked. Do you find the electric power to be good enough with two of you on it ? Any problems with hills when they two of you are on it ?

    • @WeWillNomad
      @WeWillNomad  Рік тому +1

      The EU version is limited to a 250W motor and along with the matching controller it can run out of assistance going up hills when we're both on the bike - that said within reason we've managed some gnarly outings 😄. The only way to improve that is to replace the controller and / or the hub motor - there are kits available. You can also add an 'EggRider' which gives more control of the existing software settings which apparently also make quite a difference. Some people complain about the brakes and lack of suspension. We changed our brakes to cable actuated hydraulic and fitted a sprung seat.

    • @creekyknee
      @creekyknee Рік тому +1

      @@WeWillNomad Thanks for that information. Much appreciated. I had been thinking of getting two smaller individual electric foldable bikes (like the Myrider) they weigh only 17KGs each, but then saw yours and thought that maybe we could get away with one bike. I believe it's around 35KGs. And would work out cheaper than two Myriders. It also has some other advantages, only one bike to secure/park, my other cyclist is not as confident riding as me ;-). I'd be curious to know if any other subs have any experience or suggestions on suitable ebikes for a motorhome/campervan ?

    • @WeWillNomad
      @WeWillNomad  Рік тому +1

       @Ronan Gately Either way will be a bit of a compromise. We started with 2 non-electric folding bikes but that was only practical under limited circumstances. However, the advantages were low weight and easy storage. Disadvantages are same as what you mention. Double the security issue, one nervous rider in traffic / busy areas - which complicates navigation as well. So first thought was to change to 2 x e-bikes but little would change except for easier pedaling. A critical aspect is the limited load capacity of these bikes as weight obviously is the major factor for reduced range and hill-climbing ability. Together we scrape under the so-called weight limit. But we changed the rear tire to a scooter tire of the same size to get higher load capacity. The rest is all standard and it works reasonably well. What we really like is that we can ride bike paths and find routes off-limits to having a scooter for example. But truth be told the addition of a scooter might open up another world of options... But then we have to fit a scooter rack and the weight of the rack and scooter is added... It's a never - ending quest for the perfect balance . Just by the way, we've had no issues (legally speaking) riding with a passenger so far but in most countries 'carrying a passenger on a bicycle not designed as such' is not technically legal. Even in Denmark and Sweden. BUT, cargo-bikes, trikes, bak-fietse, tandems can technically be classified as 'designed for carrying a passenger'.. We were once stopped in Germany by police but we explained that the bike is designed to carry a passenger - it has a seat and foot pegs - and that was that.
