So refreshing to have this explained with clarity. Great stuff. :)

this flash cartridge is awesome I made a bunch of them for my c64 local community, and they have excellent CRT, PRG, and T64 compatibility... But you have to understand that D64 images with a Fast Loader won't work at all!!! Due to mainly those fast loaders has direct hardware access to the IEC port, so that way overrides kernal routines for transferring at the highest speeds, but Kungfuflash hasn't an IEC connector (as sd2iec or pi1541 or Ultimate cart does) instead KFF intercepts kernal vectors calls routines loading from a D64 or D81 disk image at very high speed. That works pretty well, ONLY if games have the option before start loading select to disable fast loader routines during disk load ... most of the new disk compilations and new games have that option or their fast loader, switching to a kernel transfer routines which works flawlessly with KFF.

A C64 without sound is tragic. You could turn the 64 into a BMC with Pi Zero. Uses your existing keyboard, and case.

Most disks used fast loader which would require full emulation of the disk drive which in itself contained 6502. I don't know if it would be possible to implement a full disk drive emulation in KungFuFlash and pull the CIA-chip to prevent conflict, but it's obvious that without something like that most d64s are not going to work. I personally don't have a working drive so I would prefer such an option. Pi1541 could replace the drive, but I would prefer a single device like KungFuFlash.

I have one of these in my Retro Rewind shopping cart, but I couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger just yet. Great to see someone doing a review on the NTSC version. Too bad about your SID. Do you suspect it's the chip itself or some traces on the board or something? WHOA, incompatible with the 64C? That's my daily driver as well. Sheesh. It doesn't say anything on the site about being incompatible. Odd. Also I think disk support is very limited, being that it can't remap device numbers. It can only load what it finds, and once a device number is referenced, it freezes.

Hey thanks for your comments... I really don't know a whole lot about hardware but I suspect the SID chip is blown. Also it just doesn't work on my C64c which is also my daily driver for now. Yeah it for sure has it's hiccups but may improve with firmware updates.

@@GRayDefender I have an ARMSID that works great and has lots of options. Adrian Black did a review of the replacement SID's recently on his channel. I also noticed my comment about the Ultima IV remaster got deleted I guess since I linked to the repo so maybe it looked like spam?

Hey thanks for your comments. Yeah I looked for your original comment but yt must have deleted it. I did download Ultima IV from the link you provided. I appreciate it. Yeah I have some replacement arm sids just need to whip out the soldering iron if I ever want to replace them in the original C64 motherboard.

YT doesn't preserve offsite links in comments by default. Sometimes you can disguise it with spaces to look like a non-link.

How do you capture video from the C64 to your PC?

Through the use of a Frameister xrgb mini.
