I’ve recently delved in to 1st edition Base holos and the PSA 7s were way more reasonable to fit in to my budget than any of the higher grades. They’re completely historic, nostalgic, and beautiful (to me); and gosh darn it they make me happy to look at them and remember a time where adult problems just didn’t exist. I love that I can engage in our hobby at a level that is ideal for me. Heck, I’m GLAD that not every Base holo is a PSA 10 out there or I wouldn’t be able to get a single one of them haha
When I got into the hobby I said to myself. I’m crazy if I spend that much on a rare item. Now I say to myself I’m crazy if I don’t spend that much on a rare item
When I buy it for the art. I take advantage of eBay bucks and even though a Japanese Blaine's Moltres is cheaper than an English version, it is still classic Sugimori, affordable, and still has some value.
Yes they are too expensive. Nobody is selling them just for somebody else to acquire them, they're selling them for somebody else to grade them and then sell it for a ridiculously high price
I've found in the last few months that ungraded 1st Edition holos can go for more than graded PSA 9's which are not even 9-10 worthy. I've bought PSA 8's and opened them up to sell them more ungraded than I did graded. 😑😑😑
I do love PSA graded cards in some aspects but also I like putting all of them in a binder neatly (obviously mainly sets). Sometimes grades kill the price, you just have to know a lot about the card flaws and inspect it as best as you can. I know that you can look at a card and think its flawless and even PSA states that it is a matter of opinion. I was reading some people were debating on either submitting PSA cards in for review to possibly bump a grade or to take them out of the case and resubmit them. Just in my opinion, getting them out of the case could (and I quote) damage the card. If you take the difference between a PSA 9 and 10 card (depending on the card), some people resubmit the card a few times till they get the grade they want. Ex. PSA 9 Example Card is worth $500 vice the same Same Card in PSA 10 grade worth $5000. You could resubmit multiple times without losing any $$. Oh and you cant go down a grade.
How does he decide what Pokemon cards go in his background on each video lol? Oh btw nothing more perfect as a shirt pocket to fit a PSA graded Pokemon card ;)
Really enjoyed this video Scott, excellent as always! I think as you mentioned in previous videos we are actually slightly spoilt in Pokemon compared to vintage sports in the sense of the grades available to us quantity and price wise.
Who wins in a fight: Shohei Ohtani vs Charizard? This is a good video. Cards having value is awesome and what makes it fun to get a pack of cards. I've been getting into baseball cards the past year after having nothing to do with card since Fossil Pokemon and I get the same feeling opening baseball packs as I did Pokemon packs when I was a kid. Hey, there could be an auto in this pack that is worth $2.05 or a few hundred dollars. Or just base cards for me usually. I'm not crazy into Pokemon like my younger self but I like getting some cards that look cool that I come across. I'm pretty sure it was you that showed off that Rocket Hypno and I was like that's a cool looking card and wanted a PSA one. Saw the 10s were expensive and went lolololololol. Found a 7 for super cheap and never been happier looking at my 1st Edition Rocket Hypno card.
Its not expensive. If youre trying to complete the sets by themself just binder condition its not expensive. Example if you want the sets complete and you can manage to lets say invest 300,-400,- per month each month you could buy a complete set of the gym series other sets are cheaper some are more expensive. And before you know you have the whole WOTC era complete.
When I buy cards, I think am I gonna be able to sell this eventually? Will I make a loss? Near Mint and above sell easy, so I try to buy mint as much as possible. I don’t buy under NM.
I agree w your logic. I just cashed out due to needing the funds for other priorities. Cards are nice but took my profits (triple up over 2 years) and putting that money into other collectibles to flip. Ill miss it but i just know it will always be there.
I agree with everything. I acquired almost 7,000 cards no doubles in the past year (im a binder collector but and always try and upgrade) I haven't spent much money and have had a blast. Buy lots and sell the bulk fairly do good by others and this hobby will give back. I've nearly completed most wotc sets all done locally as I've posted about before. Maybe my location is good or the fact I look constantly in my free time. Awesome video Scott. Keep informing others you're one of the keepers of the hobby and of course Gary lol.
As you mentioned: If you are coming in for growth, buy the more expensive Pokemon cards (within reason and what you can afford). Putting money to cards you enjoy can give it sentimental value and if it happens to have exponential growth good, if not, it still has meaning to you and you can enjoy it (or pass it onto your kid/grand-kids, etc). Its kind of funny you mention that it has to have a dog bite or something really wrong with it to go into a binder (especially the Charizard). I do enjoy putting sets in a binder but I think some sets shouldnt be hidden in a binder. I am still working on the Legendary Collection which I would love to put in a frame like you did. The reverse holo of that set is great. I love the Team Rocket Set and it has a very hard to find binder that looks awesome and have the whole first edition set in NM-MT. Finishing up the Japanese version, which is so much cheaper as almost all the sets are cheap in Japanese.
I have grades 7, 8, 9, 10 of the same card because I couldn't make up my mind early on. But now that I've focused my goals in collecting exclusively 9s and 10s. My "budget" has increased exponentially. And you're completely right with buy the Heavy Hitter 1st. Today those same 7s and 8s run the same Price as it Cost me the 9s and 10s 2 years ago...
People aren't upset at the price of cards... ...people are upset they can't personally afford it. If they already owned the card and it doubled in price... Not a single person would complain.
Most of my collection is ungraded XD and of the graded ones a whole bunch I graded myself. And even higher priced cards if you keep an eye out, you can get for pretty good deal still.
Pratte question ; Is it smart to buy sets from today and sit on them? Will the values of sets recent go Up ? How long before ? How long do you typically have to sit on an item ??
To know if the new can go up in value just look to the past sets. The base set cards are still very cheap for being 20 years old. Also look at the massive print runs they have right now its insanely high. So there are so many copy's of modern cards that the chance of them going up is very small. The money would be in modern secret rares because they are harder to pull and there are less of them avaible.
I love the idea of collecting everything from a single artist! My favorite is Tomokazu Kimoya (probably spelled it wrong lol) and I started a collection with his but there were just too many lol. Maybe at a later date. I have thoroughly enjoyed his art in the most recent sets though.
Great suggestion about not forgetting the lower grade cards. I tend to focus on 9/10 but you’re right, it’s all about the front. Also, I mainly focus on Sugimori cards, so great to hear you giving the nod to that way of collecting.
I think it's important for cards to have value, in most cases an increase in value causes an increase in desirability. People want the best, most expensive items in their hobby and the fact that a lot of people cannot obtain these items fuels the desire to own them. Pokemon cards increasing in price is a good thing, when you have a large number of cards in the hundreds, thousands and tens of thousands of dollars it definitely does add legitimacy to the hobby. It's what brought me into pokemon from magic - watching these cards grow from chump change into valuable cards along with the huge collector base got me interested in the hobby and made me want to start buying and collecting as well. If there was no value, there would be zero interest in collecting the cards from me even though I do enjoy the franchise. The higher values will draw more people into the hobby in the long run.
Pierce B you only came into Pokémon because you saw growth in value and just see it as strictly a business opportunity? Or did you use to collect as a kid as well?
I had the base set theme decks as a kid but nobody to play with, I was more into the video games, I've played all the games and I still get them as they're released. I came into the TCG strictly because I saw a lot of opportunity for growth and investment, though since getting involved in the community I've made a lot of friends, interact with a lot of people and now I do buy cards because I like the art not just because I think they'll appreciate over time.
They are too expensive and it takes away from what it is supposed to be. If you think diffrently then you have alot learn or passed the opportunity to do so.
Sometimes you can’t pay the price for a set value. I just bid on the cards aka psa 10 1st Edition cards and just see how the bid war goes. I’ve won big in that scenario. And once it hits too much I back out and seek the same bid elsewhere. I think there are some people out there who just sell the cards and don’t know. I’ve seen some basic run of the mill 1st edition machamp non shadowless for like 1000$
I agree that increasing prices brings growth, but not necessarily growth in the collector market. While there is a fair amount, most of the growth that comes from increasing prices comes from the investor market. Honestly, I don't think the Pokemon collector market is doing that great. It's honestly not that much bigger than it was 5 years ago, in fact, I'd wager to say that the collector market has actually declined siginificantly over the past year with Go having faded into near-obscurity. What's really grown exponentially is the investor market, with investors mostly buying from each other, looking to sell to the next investor at a higher price.

Dr_loman99 sure man you got Imgur
kenny wynn what’s that?
Dr_loman99 it’s an App
Great perspective to have. We don't look at the backs - so if we lower expectations, MOST cards will be affordable.
Depends on your income

Kealoha Parker you can go down a grade if you take it out its case and resubmit
Yes I figured that just not if u submit for review in it's current case
One of the few legit experts on pokemon cards on youtube
How does he decide what Pokemon cards go in his background on each video lol? Oh btw nothing more perfect as a shirt pocket to fit a PSA graded Pokemon card ;)

Are pokemon collector's too poor?
Making a statement referring to the middle class as "poor" isn't provocative? Ok buddy.
