Singapore and Malaysia both claim to be the place of origin for Hainanese chicken rice, the smooth-skinned, sweet, firm-fleshed dish served with broth-boiled rice. But, if Hainanese chicken rice didn't originate from Hainan, why does it have that name? I arrived in Wenchang, the birthplace of Hainanese chicken rice, to try and track down the most authentic Wenchang chicken. But on my journey, I saw buildings in Baroque style and had the so-called British afternoon tea, and I couldn't help wondering if I'm really on the island of Hainan.

Since Wenchang is in Hainan, the method of cooking the chicken in Wenchang and eating, including the gizzards plus condiments and sauces, is technically correct. Hainanese chicken rice. However, Hainanese chicken rice that is more widely known originated in either Singapore or Malaysia and was a recipe from immigrants from Hainan. Besides the tenderness of the chicken, the chilli sauce and to a certain extent minced garlic sauce are really important. Of course, the way the rice is cooked is also different. I have tried Wenchang chicken rice in Hainan but it certainly cannot compare with the Hainanese chicken rice you get in Singapore or Malaysia.

@@jackjackyphantom8854 no lar, Study about Hainanese, many Hainanese open coffee shop in Sg and Malaysia. They brought the recipe of Wenchang chicken rice to SG and Malaysia, but as I know Malaysian and Singaporean improve the taste a lots.

Chicken Rice was invented by the Hainanese in Malaysia and Singapore by modifying the recipes.

About 250 km, or 150 miles. Wenchang is northeast of the Hainan island. Sanya is on the southern tip of the island.

Comparison of chicken rice between Hainan and Malaysia or Singapore is as meaningless as comparing pizzas in Italy to those in NYC or Chicago. Each dish evolved in its own environment, separated by vast distances. So today we have more to enjoy and that is a better discourse than trying to establish origins or which version is more 'pure'.
