The FNAR was a neat rifle, just over priced and weak on features. The FNAR is based on the BAR Mk III rifle which was designed by the grandson of John Browning.

I picked up an FNAR in the summer of 2012 when the price dropped to $995, because I wanted an accurate and reliable semi-auto .308 to go with my Howa bolt action .308. I never shot it much. I think it looks like a hump back whale, but form follows function and I liked that the stock was made for a proper cheek weld with a scope, and I liked that there were cheek risers and butt pads that could be interchanged to fit the rifle to the shooter. I still have my 308s but have mostly moved on to 6.5 Creedmoor. Maybe it's a caliber fad but I have three bolt action 6.5 Creedmoor rifles and a very nice Aero Precision AR-10 semi-auto. I need to get to the range a lot more.

I have a BAR in .243 I inherited from my grandpa. It's my main "deer rifle." It is super smooth shooting and reliable, with a great trigger. Mine has a Lyman, 3-9×40 that my grandpa claimed to have traded his prior rifle for, a sporterized springfield. I always wished the mag was removable instead of the hinged, box magazine. He's been gone almost 20 years now.

Yes the browning stock is nice depending on your wanted outcome. But this stoxk, plus thr options for shoulder rest and cheekriser
.this us a fantastic extremwber durable rifle thar shoots moa every singke time with the cheapest ball ammo.
When u take i to cist of specialty ammo even with 5.56/223. This is still a more cost effective option and its easier to get ammo for AND on top of that, its cheao to feed for a 308.
And tes although its 7.62x51 you 100% can shoot 150grn 308 expecting slightly.more recoil...
Most parts can be found on brownells even thi i highly doubt u willk EVER ha e to replace anything. This is 1 solid s.o.b....
Now have a 3-9 and 3-15 and on a heavy model only wish i would have put on a 4-16.lluminated.
Ill hunt with this rifle the rest of my life.
150yds 10rd mag cold bore all 10 shots met the fanta can....

There's a Swedish company making handguards to free-float the barrel, helps a lot with accuracy. They also make a AR stock and grip adapter, fixes the geometry, helps with follow-ups and staying on target. Mags are ridiculously priced... But overall a really good semi hunting rifle.

13:07 - Until 2023 in Sweden, the laws prohibited use of "rifles that has a miltary wibe to them" but the FNAR rifle made it through. Thus this rifle was the only legal semi-auto .308 available.
This year the laws changed so everyone is running for the AR10/15, so you can easily find fine FNARs for less than $1000 with several 20-round-magasines. :)

I feel blessed to be given the chance to purchase mine new in box for a great price.
Back in 2011, a local gun dealer in southern Alabama was the only place I had seen one in stock, with a price tag of $1200 dollars. A lot of money for someone recovering from a divorce. A year later, he was liquidating his stock to close his permanently close his store. As I was the only one who wanted the FNAR, he offered to drop the price to $800 dollars if I took it that day. I didn't hesitate, bought as soon as he said the price.
He closed his doors for the last time a week later and another business wound up with the leftover inventory. He died three months later of cancer.

I was averaging 1" to 1.25" groups with general ball ammo. Match ammo I could get 1" sometimes less. I've be told by law enforcement buddies that the average SWAT sniper shot is typically 100 yards or less. I think this was kinda the nitch that FN was going for as some departments were starting to consider moving away from bolt actions for faster follow-up shots. Pain to field strip but fun to shoot.

Just bought my FNAR Heavy for $700, gun store the owner is retiring and had a 40+ % sale. Got two of those mags. Cannot wait to fire it. This one's chambered in 7.62X51mm does that mean I can only shoot the NATO round through it or can I shoot .308 as well? Thanks for the review!

I have a Browning badged version of the fnar called the sxar. Came in mossy oak camo. I absolutely love this rifle, 1 to 1.5 inch is normal, light bullets are not it's favorite. It really is a crazy rifle with no clear purpose, but I'm glad to have it.

I had one for the better part of a decade set up with a Leopold VXR Patrol. It ran everything I tried through it, and held pretty consistently at 1moa. Ended up trading it in the long run due to a lack of aftermarket options for it. Never had a complaint about it other than that though

I really wish Browning would've worked out the issues with their civilian BARs. I had high hopes for a BAR MkII Safari chambered in 25-06... but reliability issues halted my purchase.
America needs a RELIABLE long action autoloader. Browning has limited the DBM (divorced mag) variant of the Mk3 to .308 🤦‍♂️🙇‍♂️.... and there's no way in hell, I can justify the $7,000+ price tag of the Ohio Ordinance H.C.A.R. just to settle for 30-06.

How did I miss this episode??
This is my favorite no non-sense reliable gas gun that puts bullets on target. Yes, it is a consistent 1.25 to 1.5 MOA gun with match ammo and groups 147/150gr ball ammo well.
For best performance/accuracy consistency, reloading the ammo is recommended for these as some factory match ammo is loaded a bit tame even for gas guns on the charge weights and the group consistency suffers.
Yes, the cleaning steps isn't the simplest but if you've done it at least twice properly and pay attention to details, it's not that big of an issue.
FNARs were a great deal when they were discounted down to $900 new, cheaper than buying a Browning BAR mark2 in 308.
Yes, I've taken it hunting several times.

Got one new in 2008, between when Obama was elected and when he was sworn in. Really wanted an Ar-10, but they were twice the price...if you could find one. And mine was $1299 at the height of that particular black gun panic. I've never seen one going for $1800. Like someone else said, mine is pretty heavy, even with the "light" contour barrel, which is heavier than most other "regular" barrels. What FN called the "heavy" barrel was too heavy for anything but supported shooting (bench or prone), at least for me. I've gotten consistent 1-1.5" groups, occasionally a sub-1" group. Oddly mine hates most "match" ammo and won't group for crap. But does fine with hunting ammo, PMC ball (149gr), and my 150gr Hornady FMJ handloads.10 years after shoulder surgery, I've just about given up shooting any long gun that kicks, but I can still shoot this one very comfortably--much more of a steady shove, not a sharp pop. Reliability has been good with mine. Love your reviews, MAC. Keep up the great work!

I bought my FNAR in 2020 from an FFL that was going out of business and pd. $800 new with one mag. and could not find any mags anywhere in the country, Then one day called a local gun shop and he said No he did not have any, just before hanging up he said wait a minute this guy came in and bought one of these used and said he did not want to buy the extra mags, let me go see if they are here, and sure enough they were so I went and bought them all for $50 each X 8. Then a couple days later he called me back and said they found 8 more and I got them all for $25. each. Since then I installed a BDX by sig. sight system and had the barrel threaded for a sandman S suppressor. I really like shooting it. But have not shot it over 100yrds.

I didn't even know this rifle existed before today.
I came by this video bc, coincidentally, a friend of mine offered to sell me his bc he doesn't use it. He's getting older and facing health issues that don't let him make it out to the range as much as he wants.
Here's my dilemma. I have been wanting to have a LR rifle in .308. I've been told that nowadays you can build an AR 10 with good quality parts and good glass that can easily take you out to 800-1000 yards.
So I'm thinking that in one hand, I can build a rifle that will get me the accuracy that I want, easy to maintain, fix, and clean; and with no proprietary mags.
Or I can buy the FNAR from my buddy and just deal with the few headaches that come along with it, but end up with a cool gun that functions well, and it's a good conversation piece.

  • @Josh-c5g
    @Josh-c5g 3 місяці тому

A little advice.. before you start saying a rifle doesn't like a specific Ammo, try zeroing your rifle before making the video. If you put it away and take it back out months/years later and expect it to hold zero for whatever ammo you were using back in the good old days, then use the same ammo you used back then.. Or save yourself the embarrassment and simply re-zero your rifle before making the video with the Ammo you are going to use during the shoot.
Your shots were so far off and sporadic it made you, your Ammo and the gun all look bad. Dont pull a dusty gun from the closet and just assume its Zero'd and then when your groupings suck blame the ammo brand or the weapon.
Sorry man, I've watched alot of your videos and this one was embarrassing to see you shooting so poorly with Norma Match and a FNAR scoped with a Primary Arms Optic. We shouldn't have to watch a video get drug out 5-10 minutes too long because you simply "forgot" to Zero your rifle first when you have been doing Gun focused youtube content for years now.

I have one because Nut n fancy said it was cool back in the days. I made some upgrades with infitech and now able to change out the buttstock for AR stocks and it’s definitely an accurate semi auto hunting/tactical rifle. But… “field stripping” is a b!tch. Magazines are proprietary and expensive. And now discontinued. If i need spare parts though, I can just get the browning BAR Mark whatever parts.

Bought my 20" Heavy back when Obama got elected and paid 1600 for it I think. Still have it and enjoy shooting it. Tear down is a pain but I've gotten used to it. It's my only rifle so I've thought many times about selling it for something like an AR10 just because mags are so hard to find. Ammo is expensive so i don't get to shoot as often as I'd like, and I'm sure I have less than 600 rounds through it.

    Purchased in 2012 for $1150 w-3, 20 rd mags and 1, 5 rd mag.
Shoots like butter to me but I have the hvy bull barrel.
This thing feels like a classic car. Yeah, its heavy but it's made of metal where it needs to be to handle bigger cal semi auto use. When you hold it, you can feel the old school tough that Brownings were famous for.
There is nothing scary about stripping down this rifle.... to me it's like a walk through a beautiful park of engineering and design. After seeing the inner works, I loved it more. Due to the piston design general cleaning and maintenance is the barrel, and wiping down the outside, so no need to field strip.
I agree this would never compete with the modern AR developments, in terms of market popularity, but I'm not sure it was meant to. It is a classic semi auto chambered for more powerful rounds, brought up to speed utilizing modern furniture such as poly stock, grip, and picatinny rails that allow for easy custom configuration, with quality built in features like a fluted and crowned barrel, butt stock fitments, etc. As far as the magazines go, Magpul has spoiled our expectations, but if you run out of ammo you could always smack someone in the face with the large metal magazines that fit this rifle.
Worst case scenario, this rifle will not diminish your hopes of effective fire power utilizing a good sling.

I feel like these would have been a more competitive option before AR-10/SR-25 pattern rifles became more standardized and affordable. By 2008, it feels like that trend was starting to take hold and kick in. Also, does anyone else find it kind of funny in the video that the rifle liked Norma ball ammo more than Norma match ammo?

I bought it in the panic of the Obama years and there was a shortage of guns for a bit. I also got it below $1500. It i s a smooth shooting .308 that is accurate enough fora semi automatic. I also switched out the buttstock for an adapter that take AR buffer tube and grip.

We had family friendly who had one 300 win mag I saw him miss two chances personally that he had the gun up on a deer and the loudest click in the woods would happen. Click, then suddenly "shit" as the deer goes bounding off. Great gun for the range but not trustworthy.

I have several of these, in various furniture configurations, some branded as Winchester, and they have all performed flawlessly. Have harvested numerous elk up to 400 yards, about as far as I like to hunt with 308. The Browning BAR Mk III is similar, without detachable magazine in 300 Win mag, if you want to reach out further. Sure wish they offered it in 338. You can always rely on FN's quality. IMHO that makes them worth the money. Used examples can be found as low as $1000. My state limits mag capacity while hunting to 5 rounds, but the 30 round mag dumps are a blast at the range. Love your stuff MAC, keep up the good work.

I’m kinda puzzled by the bad rap the BAR seems to have these days. My dad served in Korea and when I was growing up he talked about the weapons they had. The soldiers and Marines who fought in Korea loved the BAR. Heavy, yes, but a portable firepower BEAST.

    • @rhekman
      @rhekman Рік тому +2

I know the riflemen who carried the original and the M1918A2 into WWII and Korea loved them. But I think the more sour modern take is because the BAR was an evolutionary dead end in terms of tactics and fitness for purpose on the battlefield. They were reliable and hard hitting, which is why the troops appreciated them. But from Army Ordnance standpoint, they were expensive, had lots of small parts that couldn't be serviced in the field, were only controllable in full auto from a bi-pod, and had smallish magazines of only 20 rounds. The Garand was a better semi-auto battle rifle, and even it was heavy and unwieldy compared to the assault rifles that would come later.
