My Uncle Andy Fenady was co creator and producer of the "Rebel"! He also wrote the lyrics to the song for Johnny Cash to sing! I always love to hear this song! The song helped Uncle Andy send his six kids to college! My Dad Georg was a casting consultant for the Rebel! He went on to become a director! I have fond memories of visiting the set of "The Rebel" when I was young! Nick Adams was a close friend of the family as well as Dan Blocker of "Bonanza"! Sad we lost both of them so soon! Uncle Andy And Pop have gone on to be with them in Heaven! RIP guy's! May your memories be eternal! Love ya, JF !
have gun will travel. The rebel makes me wish I could go back in time when my dad and I watched these two awesome shows. Thanks Johnny Western you have made my day.
i. Fish I'm reading your post 3 years later. I hope both of you are still doing well! I'm 66 now & still watch reruns of "Paladin" on ME tv! Johnny did a great job singing, found this & others of his here on UA-cam. All these years & I never knew he played with the great Johnny Cash!
@@jeffhartung3542 I grew up in south wichita and my dad worked with a Gerald? Hartung at Cessna way back in the day. They lived near 31st and Meridian I believe. Would you be related? I remember Gerald had a son a little older than me, I'm 58 now and we all did some pheasant hunting together.
@raffi98 johnny cash willie nelson kris kristofferson and waylon jennings are and were the highwaymaen. sorry if i confused you . but i love johnny western music also
Wow! How lucky to have him for a neighbor! My all time favorite Johnny Western song is " The Gunfighter "..Tell him that he still has a lot of fans out here !!
@grannydyess I saw him perform yesterday, 2/14/2012 for an Arizona Centennial celebration. Being a fan of old Westerns, Johnny Cash and all the classic Country/Western singers, I've always liked Johnny Western. It was great to hear him sing the old TV themes and it brought back nice memories. Rex Allen, Jr. performed also and he's also an excellent C/W singer.
That brings back some memories. Probably couldn't play that theme song on tv today with all the hypersensitive woke folks. They'd have a melt down. Glad I got to live when I did when America was still America. Johnny's gone on but I'm glad we still got this guy.
I watch a lot of the old tv show networks ,THE REBEL I haven't seen in a while , but your right ,when it comes on the theme song is music only no lyrics ,I think they call that being politically correct , as for me I'm IN- POLITICALLY CORRECT ,I SO LONG FOR THOSE DAYS BEFORE ALL THE POLITICALLY CORRECT BULLSHIT
I had the pleasure of meeting Johnny Western at the Memphis Film Festival in (I think) 1999. He entertained at the banquet, and my stars! The man won everyone over with one heckuva show. What an entertainer.
I met Johnny Weastern in Wilcox Az some time back (More years then I care to count) He has such a strong presence when you meet him and with no effort at all on his part you instantly know you have just met a very great man.
I saw Johnny Western on the Johnny Cash show in Timmins ON. Canada in 1962 I believe as his song "Johnny Yuma the Rebel" was climbing the charts and I'll never forget it,he wore a nice brown suit and loafers and broke a guitar string. He opened up with "Big River"
Couldn't comment on the J.C. vid but I'm proud to say was born n raised in YUMA,AZ. (went to Cibola high school) and many don't know this but south of the Gila River was Rebel Confederate territory, North was Union. Back then we were only a territory of New Mexico. Then became a state in 1912..
@grannydyess that's ok, there was a few more musicians playing for the highwaymen which we never heard about. drummer, bassist, other guitarists or intrumentists which are never known because they play in the back. that s why it was possible that western played wuth them thx
After The Rebel, there was "The Loner," the story of a union officer immediately after the war. A young Jerry Goldsmith wrote the theme. It starred Lloyd Bridges (remember Sea Hunt?). It was created by Rod (Twilight Zone) Serling after TZ ended. It ran only for a year. It took a while for me to get used to seeing Bridges as a cowboy decked out in black instead of a skin diving suit. I suspect everyone here knew JW sang the Paladin theme, but did you know he was in one of the episodes? I just saw him in an episode that included June Lockhart (a western doctor and Paladin's one love) and John Anderson. Story was about "being a man" and not a wimp in the west with the backdrop of a break out of small pox.
Many famous actors did westerns, if not tv,then it was movies! There were so many tv westerns, some lasted many years while many only a year or two. They sure do bring back many good memories!
@grannydyess yes he s a good singer too but i never heard he played in highwaymen. even wiki doesn't seem to mention it, which doesn't constitue an evidence although
Fred Libby well I decided I want some memories back for you muscular doing anything else but when I wake up my take a breath and make somebody smile makes my day

Your very lucky, l bet he did a great job, man has a wonderful singing voice!
@@Mike583 He did. I have to admit, I'd never heard of him before, and now I'm a huge fan.
I was there also. You are correct he was wonderful and I enjoyed him so much I searched till I found his box set of music to purchase.

a wonderful TV western starring Nick Adams; theme song sung by Johnny Cash
I must be older than I thought. I remember when Johnny Western was on the Johnny Cash shows.
I'm 66, remember watching the Johnny Cash show, but not a lot about it sadly. I just learned that Western was a member of Cash's band!
Wow, this was the best performance of this song I've ever heard. Great song and wonderful television show I remember from my childhood.
Never knew he sang both this song and Ballad of Palidin.
Johnny Cash actually sang it, for TV. Below is the actual theme-song itself.

Bridges did a good amount of Westerns early in his career. Remember, he was the deputy in HIGH NOON.
Lloyd played cowboys often. He was the cowardly deputy in "High Noon."

It was after being on Have Gun will Travel that Johnny wrote the Ballad of Paladin to thank Richard Boone for having him on the show!!
Miss hearing Johnny Western on the Radio in Wichita.
