This week I'm showing you how to troubleshoot a 2 stage compressor on an air conditioner. Its very similar to the single-stage units with the addition of a solenoid that moves it into and out of the two stages.
Thanks for the video!!! Any reason why on a dx unit, the cooling shuts off right after the second stage comes on. It's not tripping on high head pressure & not low on gas.

Just run into that problem and called Trane support and i could not get a good answer I got 24Volts at Y1 and common also 24v going to the time delay relay then to the resistor however out of the resistor no voltage and no information as DC volt or 24v so I end up ordering the rectifier and the resistor. To give emergency cooling i jumped or transfered the YL terminal 3 from the time delay straight to the contactor and A/C operated. Thank you for your information.
Seems it would be better to default into high 2nd stage incase theres a signal problem or failed solenoid...at least the compressor would become a normal high stage only compressor. Am I missing something?
I agree. My customers would be happier. I guess they do this to eliminate the need of a relay since almost all 2 stage capable thermostats keep the y1 energized when calling for second stage via Y2.
Some condenser unit runs on 2 wires from thermostat to run 2 stage. The condenser has control board to pair with thermostat. So they might run DC solenoid
In hot and humid south Florida would 2 stage make sense? I have a 1960s home with ductwork I’m the attic… attic badly needs insulated but has no access until it’s time to replace the roof unfortunately I’m need of an AC now. Most contractors said keep it simple, 2 said upgrades to a 2 stage would be beneficial…
Just had a brand new 2 stage ruud system installed on Friday and my wife is already complaining that the house isn’t cooling the same. I kinda agree. Before (old system), we would go to 74 at night and we were very comfortable and the house was cool. NOW,…..it’s day time and we have the system set at 72 and it’s warm in the house. I do feel some cool (not real cool) coming out of the vents, but the airflow is very very low as if the fans blowing slow. Is the slower fan speed meaning I’m only in stage 1? Something’s not right!
I have a carrier that blows the 24v fuse when y2 is connected wire is good from furnace to condenser unit. Unplugged connector at compressor and looks like some water must have gotten in somehow. Rust around pins Cleaned off rust and plugged back in disconnected y2 at thermostat and unit will run albeit at only 1st stage. Connect wire back at thermostat and it still blows fuse
I have a Trane Gas pack 4 ton 16seer, my question is what at the thermostat determines if I run 1st stage low air flow or second stage high air flow and can I make it run second stage stronger cooling by adjusting thermostat???????????.....stevie I have a Trane 824 thermostat

I'm wondering if my Carrier stat "that" has a y2 connection is energizing it, guess I should see 24V coming out of the stat at the y2 wire to the cond. My t-stat manual has little info on when 2nd stage is engaged, do they usually control as with emergency heating, say 2 or 3 degrees above-set point? Thanks for any information you or anyone else can add. It's a somewhat older stat. I hope to test y2 at the unit later today, thanks again. A big thumbs up.
can a 2 stage compressor only run in 2nd stage? i had one where the contactor is pulled in on a call for 1st stage but only the CDF runs, if i manually powered the rectifier, the compressor would kick on no issue. this makes no sense to me. appreciate any help.
I have one that turns off on internal overload intermittently so not always Fan is good Condenser is clean Freon subcool within range but for some reason it turns off on internal overload! What the heck! What do u think is probably the problem. It will run for days then it does it again intermittently?!!
Can you tell if the compressor is switching from first stage to second stage using your gages rather than an amp meter ? Sorry if this is a dumb question i am just learning from your videos

No your pressure should only change due to ambient temperature (plus30) if system has a txv measurement is sub cooling, otherwise fixed or expansion loop superheat , if you don’t understand this don’t ever add refrigerant please!

Thanks, OC. I use movavi for editing. Honestly, the point of failure is exactly the same as single-stage units. Shorts, internal overloads etc. And all for the same reasons as the single stages too. airflow! refrigerant charge, flooding, linesets, contaminated refrigerant, installation errors.

There is 24v DC at the compressor plug (two white wires) so the solenoid and rectifier are sending power, however the compressor runs in one speed, low. In this case, the two speed is not as reliable as the single speed.

Any known reason for using a DC solenoid coil and not AC . It would be nice to know the technical reason ? Thanks for great video

Turn the temp down lower and it’ll kick in.

Two stage ac cost more to repair. So it all depends on whether you can afford it.
