Cheers National Gallery for this lovely explanation of both Eva's work and her relationship with Manet. It was fascinating to hear the opinions from the artists included in this video. Brilliant. 🥂

I think he had a great admiration for Eva Gonzalès and her art. He has painted her in all her femine confidence and probably wanted to capture her as perfect as he could, hence all the scrapings. A wonderful painting! Great video, thanks for upload.

I hadn't been aware of Eva Gonzales. She was clearly very talented.

I do enjoy the discoveries our current technology gives us about how the great artists went about their work and their techniques, and second thoughts. This is a beautiful work and is a homage to the subject. Thank you for showing us brief glimpses of her own works. So many talented and skilled visionary women we rarely learn of, except through the men who knew them.

As a painter it's really gratifying to know that great artists also struggled with perfectionism and "taking too long".

thank you Jessie ... manet's work with capturing ... well 'the eyes are the windows of the soul' ... he did it so well ... for me i think Eddie and Evie were 'besties' and thanks to you and Utube, she will remain alive and Eva deserves her page in art history.

I am astonished that no one chose to comment on her antiquated dress that is most probably from the late 18th century ...

She clearly understood Manet, and a cerebral reciprocity existed between them

Fascinating, great video. Looking forward to getting the book and seeing the work (at some point). There really should be a book or two about Eva Gonzalès, seems to be a few foreign language volumes and many that seem to be well OOP or books with multiple artists.

“at that time” it was very easy for a man to be an artist.
