  • The United Nations has joined global condemnation of the military takeover in Mali, which saw President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta forced to resign.
The UN's Security Council echoed similar calls by regional bodies for the immediate release of all government officials and the restoration of constitutional order.
The soldiers said they acted to prevent the country falling into further chaos.
They say they will set up a civilian government and hold new elections.
Mali, a vast country stretching into the Sahara Desert, is among the poorest in the world and has experienced several military takeovers. It is currently battling to contain a wave of jihadist attacks and ethnic violence.

So the international community had nothing to say when IBK was pillaging Mali's resources and living a lavish lifestyle while his population was starving. Now that the military decided to be patriotic enough to remove him out of office is when they care about MALI? If they can provide better leadership, let them have it.

@Tessellation committing genocide the African population double in size during the colonial times because of improvement of society and western medicines. It was countries like Britain and France who ended slavery in which some African countries got rich on. And actually people are dieing in the mines and work camps today, pollution and the conditions is killing thousands of people and African wildlife is being destroyed by the demand in Chinese markets. As for debt you do know the Chinese government is expecting money back from its investments and corrupt politicians do what China tells them instead of what the people want.

Calls for sticking to the democratic process would appear to be following something of a worn out record.
Democracy is a great idea, but if you just look at what a distorted and failed model it has become, surely it is not unexpected that some decide to take other routes.
In the Uk we have a democracy of sorts, but how many actualy believe or want the options we are given. It is like being told you have a delightful choice on a menu, and with such a choice you must be happy. While you are offered main courses of cat feces, dog feces or if you feel like choosing something completely different then your alternative is stale vomit.
Choices like this are no choice at all.
Within this system reperesentaition in any meaningful way seems no longer to exist and that is worrying, it is strange that the UN does not condem this!

There is no limit for men in uniform and are above law in africa, i think there should be no army in these countries to protect the Governments to complete their 5 years in power.Corruption is like in their system like blood so no govt can stop corruption its a part of their life.

People really think the army staged the coupe for the citizens? It’s just another shift in power, as those with the guns now have the power. The problem with living in Africa, is that whenever there’s a “disagreement” in governments the only solution is by arms. Mali isn’t the first African country where the army claims its removing the corrupt. It was done in Zimbabwe and Sudan, last time I checked they’re still being run corruptly.
