‘83 was a pretty low point for them , especially when Nigel left. That, on top of the rise of Def Leppard, Quiet Riot, Motley, etc… it seems like things got better after a while. Thank goodness Tap never had to actually promote a “Jazz Odyssey” theme with an album/tour. That could have been disastrous.
Simply great humor with intentional twist. Charley Parker should have listened to this and would have laughed his balls off while a bunch of comedians give their humor opinion. Great discussion on improvisation while the essence is intentionally misunderstood, I'm laughing my balls of as well.
I have a degree from Berklee, I can attest that this is all absolutely true and accurate. nice of someone noteworthy, (lol, no pun intended) to finally tell it like it is. any mistake you make, has a technical name to justify it, an "unprepared chromatic approach". when I got lost in a chart, as bassist, I'd just play chromatically until I figured out where I was supposed to be, and people would just assume I was playing "out" but knew what I was doing.
MobiusBandwidth the key is to play that exact notes when intended. If you hear a specific harmony play it! That’s what makes it difficult. There are so many functions that notes have that all contribute to the overall experience on a way more profound level. That is if done right. It’s also about melodies and doesn’t have to be harmonically challenging but it is a choice. And its a choice intentionally made. Also no one cares about a music school degree
This stuff ought to be taught at Berkley School of Music, Eastman and Juilliard. Think I'Il sell all my saxophones and get a Flying V and a big Marshall that goes to 11. WE NEED ANOTHER SPINAL TAP MOVIE!!!
The Tap are now as influential to young musicians as their own idols (Eddie Cochran, Howlin' Wolf, Willie Dixon, Robert Johnson, Albert King etc) were to them. The erudite sophistication communicated by their lyrics betrays attempts at articulations of life's hardships fully in line with the traditions of blues. The improvisations suggest the ever-presence of that jazz sensibility. The evolution of this band gives rock journalists the thrill of charting the being and the becoming of music industry legends in a way few bands have.
i think playing the song "wrong" is actually very jazz, and makes some songs better. an accident waiting to happen? or a one of a kind improv jam that will never be duplicated?
Hang on dudes, I worshipped this movie, and I don't remember this bit. PLUS, they all have jowls and a bit of grey hair - so is this some kind of recent skit/activity/ OMG is there a sequel??? I hope so !
I do not know how many people know this but Christopher Guest had very few scripts prepared or written for this movie. They basically had a story board and improvised each scene. Now watch it again and realize they’re just winging it. It makes it twice as funny for me.
If you're a jazzer and you don't see the humor in this, then you're taking yourself way too seriously. MobiusBandwidth correctly pointed out that everything they say here is true in a sense. Even "mistakes" can be analytically described in musical terms and in doing so, appear to not be mistakes.
@xmod4itx Right you are, everyone can check it out in Wikipedia. The "bassist" is none other than Harry Shearer, who, among other accomplishments, is the voice of many characters on the Simpsons! One of them, Christopher Guest, was raised in both countries & has dual citizenship... you can read more there...
I've listened to, studied, practiced, and performed jazz for six decades; taught it at the University level for close to four decades; many of my former students are expert level performers throughout the world. The deeper you dig into jazz, the more you discover that many innovations occur accidentally, so these cats are 100% correct in that regard; also, there is a plethora of timid B.S. "social event/background jazz"--most satellite "jazz" stations fill the air with it. RIGHT ARM, S.T.!!!!!
Ironically a lot of innovations in science and engineering are somewhat accidental also but in a space that is understood much like Jazz on potentially the 5 chorus where you really start to innovate or step outside the patterns :)
When I was around 4, Miles told me something that I'll never forget. He said, "Hey Kid!...Stop throwing ice cubes on my new carpet -ya dumb ass little weed!!".
@DefenestratedMessiah I suspect Nelson2042 is himself having a little fun here. "We fought against the British to protect things like Jazz" -- that's the giveaway.
Christopher Guest and I share the same Birthdate and first name... there the similarities stop, as he is successful Film guy, and I am a humble Podiatrist working with Amputee Foot patients experiencing Phantom Pain.
Mista -don't take it personally. Just want to show that we love you...yes, everyone I imagine. Although I don't personally know anyone posting [here], I can just feel the peace and love coming your way. The caring, sharing, gooey love that only a certain kind of sarcasm can embellish. As the great Jean Paul Sartre used to say, "garçon, quelle merde dunb vous êtes pour l'achat dans n'importe quel de ces trucs".
@cacsac Can't believe you don't know who Spinal Tap is. This was a parody by an ENGLISH band, not American. Open your mind - and your eyes and ears, or else YOU'LL be the example of 'dumbing down".
Tycho -you win. "...fought against the British..". Yep, that's a definite giveaway. D-Messiah and Mista....sorry Folks, but C'mon. Geez. The great Lawrence Welk Bands? Clarence Clemens as a jazzer? Duh.
Well, It's funny if it's a put on. But, if these gentlemen are serious, then it only confirms my observation of the total dumbing down of American culture, among everything else. eddiec
Funny but sad.... we all know them..... lets all give a huge laugh, wont even bother commenting.... There must be another planet they live in where they feel safe even to make such a comment... planet of insanity..... God forgive them for their insanity.... (btw, i am still laughing my ass off..)
My guess is these guys have never attempted to play jazz. If they did, they'd be doing a 180 with regard to their snotty Brit opinions. I come from a rock drumming background (50 years of it) and have played every cover you can think of. All of it was relatively easy to master. As a rock drummer, trying to learn jazz comping skills and mastering Latin style grooves was very difficult. Actually, it was by far the most challenging thing I'd ever had to learn.
Just so you can finally catch on, Spinal Tap are a fictional parody band portrayed by American actors. However, there is a real Spinal Tap and they're called Oasis. Just watch any of their interviews - their opinions are not far from this.
Mr. Fitzgerald........ Either you can't read, or you ignored the first sentence of my comment. " Well, It's funny if it's a put on." It's obvious the gentlemen are English. Your comment suggests you are of a liberal mind bent, where only your ideas and, likes and dislikes are the right ones. Since I don't know Spinal Tap's music, I can't say they suck. But, they are are probably not my cup of tea, and I won't waste my time finding out, because I doubt they would influence me.
I don't agree. I think these old rockers have taken to many drugs. Jazz is far Superior to rock music in every way. Listen to Miles Davis's Bitches Brew and tell em that every note isn't perfectly intentional , Pure ignorance.
I can't believe I'm hearing this from Derek Smalls, the man who wrote the immortal "Jazz Odyssey".
It never happened.
Whatever you say, or don't say if you are clever, also never has or will or be happened.
You can't hear it.
At the jazz-blues fest.. I mean, blues-jazz fest.. 🤣
"music based on fear" ... "man up" LOL!
A cleverly jazz-improvised joke.
Hilarious!!! You can get a DEGREE in how to play it wrong!!!
How fascinating to observe the way one adds to what the others said and what was just supposed to be a little joke became hilarious.
`Jazz is an accident that`s glad it happened`... I kinda like that description!
Simply great humor with intentional twist. Charley Parker should have listened to this and would have laughed his balls off while a bunch of comedians give their humor opinion. Great discussion on improvisation while the essence is intentionally misunderstood, I'm laughing my balls of as well.
All of these actors here are Americans btw
Take away the triplet swing from jazz and all you get is bunch of outside notes really clanging
Well you should have no trouble with altissimo
"...an accident waiting to happen." ROFL, I just love the satire, it's so thick!
😂😂😂 Especially the people who play jazz saxophones 😂😂😂 OMG why did they make it personal!?! Nobody knows!

@@tim.van.emmerloot Very true and few did that better than Allan Holdsworth.
This stuff ought to be taught at Berkley School of Music, Eastman and Juilliard. Think I'Il sell all my saxophones and get a Flying V and a big Marshall that goes to 11. WE NEED ANOTHER SPINAL TAP MOVIE!!!
"Jazz is an accident waiting to have happened" that floored me :)))
The Tap are now as influential to young musicians as their own idols (Eddie Cochran, Howlin' Wolf, Willie Dixon, Robert Johnson, Albert King etc) were to them. This is how I feel about modern art. You go an art museum and you see people going “ooooh, ahhhh” over a picture of a thin black line on white canvas
Jazz is an accident waiting to have happened lol
i think playing the song "wrong" is actually very jazz, and makes some songs better. an accident waiting to happen? or a one of a kind improv jam that will never be duplicated?
Jazz is an accident ...... waiting to happen
.... waiting to have happened! ... GLAD to have happened :D
bloody brilliant
You can get a degree in how to play it wrong Lol
Such a masterpiece
This is brilliant.
Notice at 0:59, Nigel says tact instead of tack, a very common mistake, but obviously one he made on purpose.
It's the Man Up
jazz IS music based on fear...:17
It's just the top gear of music.😂
"Let's play, in the key..."
This is fucking gold!
But what about jazz oddissey????
+Rodrigo Morris it was Mark 2 work though.
They explain it in the other part of the interview saying that they played Jazz Odyssey to show everyone how to play jazz properly.
Well... Probably it's massive accident :D
absolutely hilarious!!! Spinal Tap...Jazz is accidents, Bwaaaaaaahahahahaha!!! Satire like a boss =D
Hang on dudes, I worshipped this movie, and I don't remember this bit. PLUS, they all have jowls and a bit of grey hair - so is this some kind of recent skit/activity/ OMG is there a sequel??? I hope so !

PWAHAAHAH i fuckin love these guys. I love the musical satire i actually go to school for jazz
haha love theese guys!
so great how harry shearer also voices monty burns

I'm not sure if you realize that they are clearly mocking the dumb idea of jazz of a lot of persons who don't understand the genre.
@xmod4itx Right you are, everyone can check it out in Wikipedia. The "bassist" is none other than Harry Shearer, who, among other accomplishments, is the voice of many characters on the Simpsons! Love it
They just wanna make some eardrums bleed🤡 I guess they would definitely dislike acid jazz
Even the word "Jazz" is improvised. It was originally spelt with double esses, circa 1340 by Benedictine monks.
Hahahahah... Come on, guys! That's funny!!
Sounds like Rush discussing jazz. .
wayne's world over here!

AS ALWAYS WITH SPINAL TAP....LMFAO!!
ha!! i knew i was a primo jazz player!
They’re correct.
When I was around 4, Miles told me something that I'll never forget. He said, "Hey Kid!...Stop throwing ice cubes on my new carpet -ya dumb ass little weed!!".
@cacsac Dude, do you know who/what Spinal Tap really is?
😂😂😂😂....man up!!!!
amazing lol!
So all these years I've been wrong.I KNEW IT!!!
You just don't "get it" do you?
@DefenestratedMessiah I suspect Nelson2042 is himself having a little fun here. "We fought against the British to protect things like Jazz" -- that's the giveaway.
@MistaRowland Gotta love it.
That is truth.
IF you don't know this, get a copy of the movie "Spinal Tap" - it's fabulous & funny as anything! Really....
Christopher Guest and I share the same Birthdate and first name... there the similarities stop, as he is successful Film guy, and I am a humble Podiatrist working with Amputee Foot patients experiencing Phantom Pain.
Its alot of wrong notes 🎶😂
Nice.
@thegreatdrbob You do realize that this is a spoof?
@mightywarriorx Dude. they aren't serious. Its a mock band
Ach, Schatzi, every time you spam you prove how many tears are rolling. Calm a bit down until YT deletes you, o.k.?
Spinal Tap are american actors portraying an english band . All people need to do is look it up! The lack of knowledge on here is astounding!
sweet, girls!!!
Mista -don't take it personally. Just want to show that we love you...yes, everyone I imagine. Jazz = Wrong Notes lol
This is very funny, but you kow that many beautifful thinks come from "misteaks" even in science. So enjoy jazz, and humour...
@cacsac Can't believe you don't know who Spinal Tap is. This was a parody by an ENGLISH band, not American. Open your mind - and your eyes and ears, or else YOU'LL be the example of 'dumbing down".
@MistaRowland Erm, I'm pretty sure Mr 2024 is pulling your leg!
lmao i know a few jazz guys that would find that funny!
@bobmeyer331, this is an excerpt from a comedy satire movie. It's a joke, son!
squares!
Yup
Johnny Ramone?
@JckDupp No mate....they are deadly serious...:-)
is this a joke? or should i feel offended?
@TheNikDevlin Damn internet sarcasm...
It's only funny because it's true
@nelson2042 You are joking, right? I mean, this isn't even a real band for crying out loud.
I am afraid of their dyed hair
Apparently, I'm the brain-dead reader.
case closed.
Tycho -you win. "...fought against the British..". Yep, that's a definite giveaway.
D-Messiah and Mista....sorry Folks, but C'mon. Geez. The great Lawrence Welk Bands? Clarence Clemens as a jazzer? Duh.
Ha ha ha!
Sorry...I was responding to my wife [here] -not the previous entries
Spinal Tap is better than jazz, was an accident that actually happened 😝
*facepalm*
hahahahaaa!
Well, It's funny if it's a put on. But, if these gentlemen are serious, then it only confirms my observation of the total dumbing down of American culture, among everything else.
eddiec
They sound like magas talking about reality!😁(no offence s.t.)
Lol I actually got my start in jazz bass and I kind of agree entire songs are improve. But it sounds good lol.
Funny but sad.... we all know them..... lets all give a huge laugh, wont even bother commenting....
There must be another planet they live in where they feel safe even to make such a comment... planet of insanity..... God forgive them for their insanity....
(btw, i am still laughing my ass off..)
Rock is the accident ;-)
I don't think they're not kidding. Clarence Clemens, the greatest jazz sax player ever is rolling in his grave about these spinal pap guys
I don't think so. I believe them. Clarence Clemens, the greatest jazz sax player ever is rolling in hi grave
Jrock.. I don't know who spinal tap is, nor do I care.

get educated first in music, then yo can discuss Jazz!!
It's a joke
I don't agree. I think these old rockers have taken to many drugs. Jazz is far Superior to rock music in every way. Listen to Miles Davis's Bitches Brew and tell em that every note isn't perfectly intentional , Pure ignorance.
It's called humor
Nitai Gauranga omg this is SATIRE. Comedy! It’s the guys from Spinal Tap!
