I think that might be part of the point, it shows how similar designs are that you can't tell the difference without prior knowledge.

It's really not.
Pretty sure it is to those unfamiliar. They share a similar art style and design direction. If you are very familiar with any game, you can always spot the difference easily and won't notice any similarities.
I think it is, especially to the casuals, who are reaaaally familiar with the first 150.
Heck if you ask any non-pokemon fans but are gamers, I doubt they can name who the current starters of the last 5 generations are yet remember what they look like

I got them all right. It’s very easy to tell the difference if you actually watch and learn about both. If you simply put any monster from any game to someone who’s never played Pokémon they’re 100% gonna get a bunch wrong. Pal and Poke are two very different games. One has guns and building the other team building and gym leaders.
