Wow that's cool bro! I would think making a string for a compound bow would be very difficult! I don't own one, but would be interested in seeing your string when done with it!
It sort of resembles a Flemish twist string. No rule against doing what you’re doing and I’m of the school, if it works use it. Cool idea regarding the serving line.👍. Most bows come with a crappy Dacron string so if they can use what I consider crap string and yours seem to work great then maybe you’re starting something new. Spot on.👍😎🏹🇨🇦
God bless you, and I hope your strings turn out great! Thanks again for your videos ... check out my buddy HANDY & his videos ... he is a great traditional archer ... I break hiss balls, but I will never be as good as him ... he is on your level with knowledge & ability!
A friend of mine is a former professor in Mongolia who specialized in archeology surrounding Mongolian archery and who is one of, if not the, primary bowyer for the bows used in their annual National Archery competition (The Nadaam Games). Two years ago he offered to make me an authentic composite bow of wood (birch), horn (ibex), sinew, and hide glue and I just received it a month ago due to the lengthy construction process. It came with a braided fishing line bowstring. It's definitely a legitimate material that both performs well enough to be used in competition and soft enough to be used on even the most "primitive" of bow materials. You are definitely not wrong to use it.
It's all I use and it's worked fine for me with all my bows from super mags, longbows, and recurves! Thanks for watching, and I really appreciate your comment .... God bless ya!
I buy my spools of BCY B55 off ebay, just checked, they run about $15. They come in a large variety of colors. I have bought three spools total, have made about six or seven strings and maybe used up about 10% on average of each spool. They are well worth it and you already know how to make strings which is huge! Seems like not many archers can make strings and if they do not many can make them well which is why they are so pricey.
@@HandyL yea, I think braided fishing line is catching on big time in archery ... Hey kinda miss our craziness when we went back and forth with some funny videos! Anyway, Merry Christmas to you and your family, and a great New Year's for you guys as well! 🧑🎄❤️
For most people it’s worth just spending $30-45 for a well made string that will last over 10 years Vs making a jig, experimenting with lengths, how many strands, etc. then not fully trusting it That said, i just started making my first string lol. For fun and the feeling you’re shooting with something you made
Hi brother i am from South Africa i also made a 16 strand endless loop string for my Take down longbow home made bow and my strings are older than 8 years i used dyneema braided fishing line. The braided line got 8 strands very strong. i cant remember what strength it is and poundage. Can you maybe tell me how thick is fast flight and Dacron bow strings? The string company's like to talk bs and saying fishing line wont work they are lying they only want to make money.
You are right, they are liars ... D97 is actually made out of Dyneema! I love the fact that people who tell me braided fishing line won't work, are unknowingly using it themselves! 😆😝🤪 I typically use 90 or 100lb test and have made my strings as low as 10 strands and years later they look and shoot fine but most of the strings I make are 12 strands! God bless ya!
There is almost ZERO stretch with braided fishing line ... With 90 or 100 lb test you have 450 - 500lbs of strength around the string grooves & 900 - 1,000 lbs with ten strands for overall tensile strength. The only thing that stretches is my knot where I tie the ends together. It has to settle for a day or two, just need to put a couple more twists in it ... Good luck and let me know how you make out with it.
@@markroberts6971 I honestly don't know but I can tell you I still have that string and I have some strings that I have had over 25,000 shots and they look like they could go another 25,000. PS I'm not telling anyone that they should use Braided fishing line, just saying that I do and the results are great so far! Hey most fast flight strings are made of Spectra which is the exact same thing most of my braided line is made of. So unbeknownst to many they are using braided line material and refuse to admit it!
Yes they are ... if your tips are good for fastflight strings your okay ... I wouldn't recommend it for bows that are made only of wood & no fiberglass lamination. Only use on reinforced tips!

Thanks bud, your a true friend! Also great job shooting those arrows in line on the video you posted. Something I will not be good enough to do just yet, but hopefully this summer!
No, I only use recurve and long bows brother. So I can't speak for compound bows. Also I don't have a bow over 50lbs due to my shoulders being real bad.
@@brians9709 it's definitely cheaper than buying strings ... It literally costs me just a few dollars when I get my braided fishing line from Wish. Make sure you use only braided fishing line.
Just a little update ... I have been doing archery for a little over 2 years now. I make all my own strings and even several mollegabet bows, and a Penobscot bow. To date I have not had one string I have made from braided fishing line at 90 to 100lbs test ever break or look like I need to discard one yet. Except when it's really bad weather out or my shoulders are acting up, I take a minimum of 50 shots a day and as much as 300 shots a day on weekends and when I'm off for the summer months. And so far all those naysayers that have said braided fishing line will fail have been wrong! As a matter of fact I have found out that Spectra and Dyneema . D-97 is actually made from the same braided fishing line material and is three times as expensive as Braided fishing line. Funny how after I posted my video Kramer Ammons put out a video where he tested regular bow strings, paracord, and braided fishing line and Braided Fishing line was the overall winner as the best bow string material & no one told him that the string made from braided fishing line would bow up on him! LOL!!!! Again, I'm not telling you to make your strings out of braided fishing line, I'm just saying that that's what I do, and I will never buy a bow string from any manufacturer! This video as all of my videos are for fun and or educational purposes only! God bless you all!
I recently searching for these informations! And you just updated. thanks for your information and keep updating. I'm gonna try it right now without a doubt!
I just watched Kramer's video. What he said was that the fishing line was surprisingly nice, slightly slower, slightly softer shooting, and roughly the same price per foot as the D-97 (the $10 spool of fishing line has less material on it than the $30 spool of D-97). He didn't say it was the overall best, he said it tied with the D-97 (which is still a good thing, just don't want it misrepresented as 'the best').
@@joedaniels4646 Yeah, I made one myself but considering it was my first attempt, I eventually built it with the cheap bowstring from Aliexpress. After a succesful making, now I'm pretty sure I'm gonna try with fishing line. Thanks!
It's actually about $5-$6 I get at Acme ... I'll have to check & see if it does actually have alcohol in it. I can't seem to find 100% Bees wax anywhere. But thank you for the heads up!
Making bowstrings is probably worth it if you are enjoying the activity and you have the time. Here's the question: Would you spend your time making bowstrings and selling them for $50? No? That's why they cost $50.
For the price of a bow I would just order a nice string dude. They last a while. Or get a spool of b55 if your worried about bang for the buck and learn to Flemish twist.
I have shot my strings over several months every single day, and non of strings have broke while I have strings that came with my bows that after only 2 months although they didn't break, they started looking like crap to where I threw them away. You might want to see Kramer Ammons test where he compared Braided fishing line strings and it beat two of the more popular strings out there, one of which I believe is the string material you mentioned. Oh and I get my sting from Wish dirt cheap ... I can make a string for under $5 with 90-100 lbs test using only 12-14 strands which makes it fire the arrows fast as hell. But hey brother, I'm only sharing what I like for those who might want to try it ... I certainly don't think my way is what everyone needs to do. I very much respect your opinion, and hey you may be right. Maybe I'll try a spool of that material you suggested, but I honestly probably won't ever buy a string. Anyway God bless you and your family and thanks for watching and providing your feedback I do appreciate it!
