Could be something he says throughout the comics that gets quoted in both. I woldn't know. The comics were more than an ocean away from me, when growing up.
Every other voice has attempted to mimic or recreate John Colicos. You can’t top what is already perfect. The other aspect is the script. His scripting was second to none. No one has written with such menacing poetry since that series.
Nailed it on the scripting aspect. Apocalypse from the 1990s X-Men TAS was so well written. The lines he had were absolutely fantastic and of course John Colicos delivered them with absolute brilliance. It's amazing to me how a series that was made for kids still remains the best on-screen adaptation of the X-Men comic books story to date. Apocalypse was just one of the elements that was so brilliantly made in that series. "Exterminate the vermin!!!" 🤣🤣
Agreed though the writers of the series stated that their intention was never to create the series for kids but to appeal to all ages, that’s what makes XMen so great. They didn’t dumb it down but went with the serious tone and stories of the comic, bringing humanities emotion and problems of today while adapting to the seriousness of todays world and history
I'll have to go with the amazing John Colicos for this one. He epitomizes Apocalypse and his line delivery was something to be marvelled. May he Rest In Peace.
Colicos`s diction was good but he failed to capture the soul of En Sabah Nur!Seriously read "The Twelve".Apocalypse in The Comics is not a one-dimensional bad guy like most people think!
@@AspieMediaBobby Really? I would say that someone who wants to exterminate most people and rebuilt the world in his own very distorted image where he would run supreme is a very one-dimensional even SOB lol. Such evil people definitely can create all sorts of rhetorical lines to justify their malice however that rhetoric has nothing to do with them or their nature, on the contrary the fact that they are able to develop narratives lines to justify and make their evil look normal or "not as bad" only stands as testimony to how evil and diabolical they are. And that is more one-dimensional than everything else.
John Colicos made Apocalypse my favorite character on Xmen the animated series. The execution of those lines was impeccable and no one has ever come close to matching it.
John Colicos is the best, he also had easily the best lines. David Kaye is a close second even when he doesn't get to speak much. Unlike most people I really enjoyed Oscar Isaac's take with a soothing voice.
I remember John Colicos as Baltar in the original Battlestar series. His diction and delivery were superb there as when he voiced Apocalypse. Being a child of the 60s and 70s, I grew up with the X-Men from their inception. Apocalypse in the animated series was delight when I watched it with my kids. Sadly, the Fox movie franchise has never brought the characters to live action as many of us had hoped and the Apocalypse movie was such a disappointment. Oh well. Thanks for this video, GenerationWest.
John Colicos, hands down! His booming, bombastic voice was perfect for Apocalypse. Second up, David Kaye; the level of menace he brought to the role was unmatched. Third, James Blendick. It's not easy to take over a role on an on-going series yet he did a great job. However, I felt a twinge of Alan Oppenheimer in his sample performance.
I’ve been looking forward to this one for a while now. It did not disappoint. So in ascending order: 5 = James Blendick. 4 = Richard McGonagle. 3 = Oscar Isaac. 2 = David Kaye. 1 = John Colicos; He is the rocks on the eternal shore. Crash against him and be broken!
You kidding me? Oscar's was by far the worst. It was on another level bad. The rest of the voice-actors are in every way levels superior than him. I wouldn't even care which one, but the castdirectors really did F up on that one badly. Also he was a short puny guy in the movie ... like bruh WHAT?????
Agree with everyone. John Colicos set the bar. A bar that could never be matched. Not to say the others were poor. They were good in their own way. But they chose well for XMen TAS. It was not the same for XMen-Apocalypse. While it was interesting, I felt they had made Apocalypse a throw away villain.
I really don't think anyone (in good conscience that is) can deny that John Colicos provided the best voicing (not just voice) for Apocalypse. I mean, he managed to capture that mad, self obsessed, malignant narcissistic spirit of a genocidal dictator so well. Perfectly in fact. "I will purge the Earth of these benighted humans!!!" - that was flawless perfection, really. John Colicos provided the best voicing for Apocalypse. May his soul rest in peace.
John Colicos, obviously, but I'm pleasantly surprised by Smith. Definitely would want him to voice Apocalypse again in future, most of the others are way too mellow. McGonagle is good as well, but he sounds more like a mephisto type villain rather than the god complex ridden self styled world cleanser that is Apocalypse.
Colicos has it, hands down. That voice, the enunciation, the gravel at the bottom of his vocal performance , the gravitas... he set the bar for the character. It sounds like everyone else tried to mimic him, but they couldn't get the gravel in the voice that he had. You can tell they even went as far as running the voices through some effects. I was give props for the courage of the last dude. It sounds like he was thinking "No way can I imitate Colicos. Let me just make my own interpretation of the choice. "
what's funny about david kaye's turn in the role is that he was talking to prof. x, who was also played by david kaye. so really.........apocolypse was talking to himself.
Despite all the negative feed back he gets for it, I honestly really liked Oscar Isaac’s Apocalypse. He stands out as one who seems like what would be a realistic portrayal of someone who’s lived throughout the millennia. Composed, clear in his vision, and nothing surprises him because he’s seen it all, just in a different time. He doesn’t act like someone out of a Saturday morning cartoon.
Though Isaac's voice is good on it's own, it does sound weird in this particular video, listening to it back to back with the other Apocalypse voices, which all sounded much older and grouchier. Also did anyone else pick up on this: 0:30/3:20?
John Calicos is first he captures the menacing feeling of apocalypse. Lorne Kennedy is second I feel that's what he would sound like if he had grown into his giant form.
Question for GenerationWest, if you continue doing Voice Connections, I have two that are pretty good: Tom Kenny and Dee Bradley Baker Rob Paulsen and Maurice LaMarche
Lines starting at 03:24 have definitely a bad ass FX. If all his voice was like that throughout the movie instead of that "tamed" dialogue voice, I would say the movie version. John Calicos Apocalypse just sounds so menacing, intimidating and honestly a tad bit megalomaniacal and to me the last part is what gives him the edge over the others in this video.
Ever since his opening line, "I am the rocks of the eternal shore. Crash against me and be broken," John Calicos nailed the voice of Apocalypse. The others are good, don't get me wrong. John's performance was just an 11 out of 10.

David Kaye sounds great too. Different but amazingly dark and evil and gives a new take on apocalypse. Richard McGonagle voice sounds best for a Mortal Kombat character for video game instead of Apocalypse. Oscar Isaac although completely different, gave a fresh take and not bad. I enjoyed the movie although Oscars apocalypse voice had some sound effect help to sound otherworldly while the other actors did not.

pathetic cliched voice acting with some REALLY cheesy cringeworthy lines. Terrible. Apocalypse is pretty lame villain tbh but at least Isaac tried to give him some personality. Calicos sounds generic as ahit.
John Calicos performance is immaculate. The confident, deep, throaty, and drawn out speech reflects a character immutable by time.
YES!!!!! 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾👍🏾✊🏾👌🏾🙏🏾
Quite agree. It was always going to be a tough act to follow. RIP good sir.
David Kaye's performance is almost as incredible. Here he feels as old as he is powerful
John Colicos is the Apex
The true voice of A
John Colicos _is_ Apocalypse. It’s not really a case of “the character died with him”, but there simply is no other.
The first voice was the one that I grew up with and it's menacing and hypnotizing.
"From the ashes of this world, we'll build a better one!"
I didn't know that that was a reference from the original cartoon used in X-Men Apocalypse.
Could be something he says throughout the comics that gets quoted in both. I woldn't know. The comics were more than an ocean away from me, when growing up.
I learned most of my vocabulary from the glory of john colicos' performance
He definitely paved the way for the other voice actors to play apocalypse

John Calicos and David Kaye, I find it especially interesting how Kaye voiced both Apocalypse *AND* Professor Xavier.
John Colicos.
Colicos needs no modulation of effect. His voice is timeless, appropriately. The best Apocalypse.
John Calicos is ALWAYS how I hear Apocalypse whenever I read him in the comics.

+kriitikko Colicos sounds like some sort of generic childish evil villain lol. Too cheesy and cringeworthy imo. Kaye was good.
*sigh* Children please, fight outside.

#1. Jon Colicos
#2. Lorne Kennedy
#3. David Kaye
1. John Colicos
2. David Kaye
No one has been able to even come close to John Calicos.
I loved John Colicos voice and xmen vs street fighter as well
I’ve been looking forward to this one for a while now. It did not disappoint. So in ascending order:
5 = James Blendick.
4 = Richard McGonagle.
3 = Oscar Isaac.
2 = David Kaye.
1 = John Colicos; He is the rocks on the eternal shore. Crash against him and be broken!
Wow, without even reading his name first, I could totally hear Beast Wars Megatron, then looked and yup David Kaye lol
Bonus for the fact that whenever Xavier interacts with Apocalypse in Evolution, Kaye's talking to himself.
He has a penchant for intelligence conversation.
2:52 This version of Apocalypse was a bit more sympathetic and wanted to do away with the world depsite his followers betraying him in the past.
Whichever one said “ I am as far beyond mutants as they are beyond you” - chills to this day. #simping
John Colicos. The original. The best. The only.
I grew up with Richard McGonagle, but I have to admit John Colicos is THE voice of Apocalypse.
I am the rocks of the eternal shore, crash against me and be broken.
1. John Colicos
2. Oscar Isaac
3. David Kaye
lol
@@FrederikEngelmand , I agree. Oscar even deserves to be cited as something good. Perhaps among the worst he gets first.
All of these are good, but man! John Colicos and Oscar Isaac really fully embrace this amazing and scary ass villain!

1 John colicos: he will always be apocalypse
2 Richard mcgonagle: yes that's my only reason
I don't know? It's impossible for me to listen to Richard's voice without hearing Sully from Uncharted.

OH MAH GAWD IT'S VICTOR GODDAMN SULLIVAN (Richard voiced Sully from Uncharted series

No you are not
Nope. I enjoyed him as Apocalypse

He's a good actor, but he could've used better writing and effects.

BEST - John Colicos, Richard McGonagle, David Kaye, Christopher Corey Smith.
OK - Oscar Isaac, Dan Hay, James Blendick.
WORST - Lorne Kennedy.

John Cailcos definitely, by right behind that is the David Kaye version that also did the voice of the Beast Wars version Megatron.
john colicos
0:36 James Blendick
1:22 David Kaye
X-Men Legends II Apocalypse looked the best. Intimidating, but not over the top. The more 'normal' voice somehow made him more foreboding as well.

Horribly miscast. Isaac is the least bit imposing or intimidating actor to play such an epic villain.
Did they use some voice manipulation on John Colicos' voice? It sounds somewhat robotical. Sounds epic and IS the voice of X-Men's Apocalypse.
everything they've built! will fall! and from the ashes of their world, we'll build a better one!
How people feel about teen titans go
Whoa
Richard McGonagle was sinister and cunning when doing his lines but Oscar Isaac's voice was soothing, strong and powerful enough to hear
I would love to synthesize that voice and walk around with it all day
😮😢😂
Oscar Issac's Apocalypse looked like a monster from Power Rangers, they should of just made him straight CGI.
John Calicos is first he captures the menacing feeling of apocalypse.
Lorne Kennedy is second I feel that's what he would sound like if he had grown into his giant form.
"How many peoples have dreamed of my end? You are no closer than the Babylonians with their swords & fire sticks. Hahahahaha."
Tim Curry would have been a good voice for Apocalypse
Question for GenerationWest, if you continue doing Voice Connections, I have two that are pretty good:
Tom Kenny and Dee Bradley Baker
Rob Paulsen and Maurice LaMarche
John Colicos. The Winner so Iconic...
James Blendick for 2nd
But for real, McGonagle scared the shit out of my 7 year old self
Almost all the actors after John Colicos tried to mimic his version. John Colicos set the standard of what Apocalypse should sound like
He's solidified that role, when I read comics with apocalypse, it's his voice I hear when I read apocalypses lines
The last one is good but only when he yells
Only one that matters is John Callicos
Can Marvel please us AI for John Calicos voice for X-men 97. His voice is just too iconic to be used by another, maybe Lorne Kennedy.
