I grew up in Newark and you can see the pub (on castle gate (bright white) the Royal Oak in the aerial castle shots.. my Mum and me lived there when the landlord was away.. played in the underground tunnels all under Newark as kids ...... didnt think nor understand what they were back then...
ps .. we ( aged 10)found a bricked up civil war stable, in one tunnel.. beyond the St Mary's church to Appleton Gate .. there were pottery ale jugs with straw "jackets" .....that's just turned to dust as soon as the air touched them .... right before our eyes ........ we always tried telling the adults.. but they thought we were lying....... However...... look on google map for.. *Newark Civil War museum* and yep.. that's the very same building the tunnel went from to the castle..
Thank you. My Grandma died in Newark. I've never been before, it was just a recent stain in my memory but now, I see it as a beautiful place. I see why my grandparents moved there. The folks were so kind. Nice to see the town. :)

(you could say "floding back" SEVERN TRENT | WATER AND SEWAGE TREATMENT I'd love to know where that tunnel running under from Northern Road/ Castle gate to Mill Gate .. came out ... because that's where that old tunnels entrance was?????!!!!! so if you know if they found anything archaeological around their, I'd be very interested to hear I discovered bricked up in the cellar stairwell a..... civil war stable.... by a building what is now the National civil war centre .. back in 95 .. the building was my friend Chris Victorian furniture restoration workshop and show room ( directly opposite the church gardens) we knocked a brick out..shone a torch into the gap..and there was the stable right on the other side of the wall .. Chris said hed contact the civil war society.. I left Newark 2 weeks later to be a bluecaot for pontins and forgot all about it.. till a few months ago ????!!!!

I wish I'd understood back then about history.. to know what I was witnessing.
pps ... from what I remember.... 78- 85 ish along castle gate, down a alleyway, there was a video games arcade ( trying desperately to remember it's name) well ... there was one tunnel defo going under those shops towards the castle .. one from castle under the church ( a side tunnel came up at wing tavern by church) then bent off towards the friary grounds .. wed laugh when we came out at the friary end because it was so strange that we'd gone under where we lived ???!!! we were 8-9-11 years old and those entrances were Just something that was just there.. just another place to play ( we were like bombsite kids in the blitz) . anyway .. there used to be a tiny sweet shop/cabin, (as small as bus shelter- tiny,) on the fossewa,y next to Sconce hills entrance (across from the spring house pub) well it closed and was demolished.... and a tunnel was found, we reckoned it went under the fosseway and join with the one across in millgate... however it was collapsed in.. nor sure if hole made when diggers knocked it down???!!!!!! we used to go up into Clay lane and into a tunnel there .... but none ever knew/recognized where it was wed come out the other end.. because it was somewhere that we'd been before Behond Newark as kids ... it was woodland on the just on tr he edge of fields in the countryside ( we stayed played in Newark) until about 15 years old .. so no idea where it was really.. but some wher out behond clay lane .... Tyne.....😉 Civil War museum Is Not Free... £8 adult, £6 children.. while it is worth a visit you wont be blown away with the content considering the history and prominence of what happened at Newark.... really missed a trick there....
