Templars: Temple Bruer, about 16 miles East of Newark was the second wealthiest holding of the order after the Temple in London. Indeed that is where the last Grand Master of the order in England, William de More was arrested in 1306. Not only did it control large, and profitable, agricultural holdings in Lincolnshire and surrounding areas but the "bruer" - rough heathland - was allegedly used as a training area for knights before they were moved out to the Mediterranean. There's no doubt Templars would have been regular visitors and guests at Newark given it's transport links.
Thank you, as a relative newcomer to Newark I am enjoying its history. I used to live in Eagle, Lincs. Where Knights of thebTemplar resided I believe. My daughter lives near Runnymede, so has a connection to King John. Which makes it more interesting for me.
