Army Veteran Steals Tank and DESTROYS San Diego…

- On May 17, 1995, an Army Veteran by the name of Shawn Nelson, stole an M60 tank from the San Diego National guard in Kearny Mesa. For 23 minutes, San Diego was put on notice as Nelson plowed through dozens of parked cars, street signs, utility poles and fire hydrants. Authorities scrambled to stop the rampage. Even requesting a Cobra Attack Helicopter from the United States Marine Corps in Camp Pendleton.
Shawn Nelson suffered a series of unfortunate events ranging from divorce to grief, to financial and physical suffering- sending the once loved family man down a nihilistic path. By 1995 addiction took over and Shawn Nelson was but a shell of his former self.

These type of people make judgements purely dependant upon the outcome presented before them. Incapable of imagining the scenario where thepolice don't shoot, the tank breaks free, and potentially dozens of people are injured and/or killed. In that scenario these same people would be saying "why didn't they shoot him when they had the chance".

One of the stories, or jokes, I heard around the time of the OJ Simpson trial was the comparison of the two police departments. The LAPD couldn’t stop a slowly moving Ford Bronco, while the SDPD had to stop a tank. Props to the SDPD and others involved. This event could have been so much worse.

Fellow San Diegoian here. I lived in community where this happened. It was an absolute shit show, watching it unfold live on t.v., was scary. Listening to the news, watching him barrel through the neighborhoods, I lived just a few blocks away, on the other side of the Balboa Ave, when he started off in Kearny Mesa.
What were your toughts when you saw that? Did you even believe what you just witnessed?
I mean you just casually drive around town and all of a sudden a goddamn tank drives past you followed by every police car the city has to offer xd

I was in the 8th grade at Jean farb middle school in tierrasanta on that day.
I'm amazed at how people really thought shooting this guy was not justified. I'm amazed they even gave him the opportunity to surrender once the hatch was opened. Kudos for that level of restraint. Really shows how the Waco incident really tarnished the image of law enforcement in general. That woman wouldn't be so heartbroken for the lunatic who just died if that tank had been barreling toward her person or property.
It is absurd, I would argue that the police showed too much restraint. I mean he could very easily have been armed in the tank and killed the officer who opened the hatch. It is ironic that police will shoot a kid eating a burger in his car but not a man attempting to drive over cars on the highway in a tank. The fact that some people see his death as unjustified proves that there will always be a contingent of people who are fucking stupid.
Everyone always had the opportunity to surrender if they in fact surrender. Even a serial killer. Its not like the cops can place him on his knees and execute him. Cops are not judge jury and executioner. I do think many people deserve executioner but we have to do our due diligence in court first.
So you know they could have dropped in a can of tear gas or pepper spray ball.

Morale of the story: don't steal other people's tools because you never know how they might react to it and what they're already going through.
Mental health is no joke. He was showing signs of paranoia by suing the hospital already after his mom passed away. I've seen the same thing happen in my family and my friends. But it always starts with some genetic component that you may not even be aware of.
He sold his own tools for meth money , and claimed they were stolen.
I knew about the incident, but I never knew what led up to it happening. I can't help but feel bad for him. The world kept kicking him while he was down until he finally snapped. Losing parents will put you in the deepest depression you've ever felt and it's very hard to climb out of it in the best of terms..damn near impossible in the worst. I'm not condoning what he did, but damn..poor dude.
True. In cases like this it is best to get professional help as soon as possible.
I'm not talking about medication as that most of the time makes it worse but more talking to someone like a therapist that does help in a lot of cases so you aren't alone and can find solutions.
His actions that day were terrible but it is understandble what led to these actions and why he did what he did.
It wasn't just all of that he was on meth. Loads of the stuff. All that plus the meth is a powder keg to set a man like shaun off

He's a big baby! He kept himself down. He's a grown up and all grown ups know their parents will eventually pass away. I don't feel sorry for him. But I do think it's awesome he managed to get a tank to go on a rampage. And he didn't kill anyone.

When I was stationed in Germany in the early 1980's, a tanker stole an M60 and did a similar rampage through a German town. He tore into buildings, cars (narrower streets) and cobblestone roads. He was cornered on a bridge, turned the gun and back over the railing into the water. For whatever reason, he didn't fire the main gun. During the Cold War, the tanks (at least the one near the East German border) carried their combat load.
Probably because you cannot operate the gun and drive the tank
What- my dad was in Germany as a tanker himself and I never heard this story- then again I never heard anything much from my dad since he hated it but still that's like the Buffalo Soldiers methhead tank scene
And yes you carry a full load in the tank. Plenty of photos from my dad with holding depleted uranium rounds, firing rounds at night and shooting the 50
Probably because some thread of sanity was still inside him. He felt angry/upset at authority but not the people.
Great fairy tale. I'm from Germany and nothing like that happened here. That was in Austria and it went very differently.
On September 18, 1994, 22-year-old contract soldier Gerhard Mikes prepares for an unusual trial. On June 8, out of lovesickness, he stole a 47-ton M60 battle tank from the Zwölfaxing barracks and flattened traffic signs, cars and rails on his 2-hour drive to Vienna-Simmering. He was sentenced to six months in prison and had to pay two million shillings, the equivalent of around 145,000 euros, in compensation. "But the tiresome story ended well, because nobody was injured in the rampage at the time," the judge justified the mild sentence the next day.

More than half the video is about the down fall. Not just the tank stuff. Well Done!
They call it foreplay lol
The man does great work.
Hey bud, glad your channel has blown up like it has, great work.
thanks man appreciate ya
@@PopoMedic it’s crazy man, blew up off that Tacoma Crip video lol congrats
These are always well done. Nice work!
Thanks for another informative vid, This provided a lot of context to this situation of which I only seen news cast of
I lived in that area at the time. Drove by the crushed freeway median barrier daily. Your video is the most detailed and informative story of this event I've come across, and I read a lot of others at the time. Thanks. Well done.
Something similar happened in Virginia in 2018 with an APC. You should cover that
Just found your channel. These videos are put together extremely well. Thank you for the amazing content
That tank rampage montage was absolutely beautiful.
I remember this! I was 12 years old at the time, almost 13, but I remember this being on every channel here in Wisconsin! That was crazy... I didn't know all the details that you shared in this video though. I just learned a lot! Thank you... 🙂🙂🙂
Thank you for making these videos I really appreciate it
Sooooo glad you switched your channel up and kept doing this kind of content. 🎉You put lightning in a bottle with this move bruv
I moved to SanD in 98 so I missed this crazy shit. I remember first meeting my boss at wackenhut who had a picture hanging on the wall of his office of the tank stuck on the K-rails. He proceeded to tell me the entire story. Turns out I was living not that far from the armory in clairemont mesa lol. ahhhh good times...I miss SanD. Great video popo!
I'm from Oceanside and I was 15 when this happened and it was crazy. We watched it on live TV up to the point when he was shot when he got stuck
Great stuff as always! Keep it up, you've discovered and developed a rhythm and style that's unique, and I love it
just stumble on your channel you are a top op man
san diego was lucky to have you
I live practically across the street from the armory that he stole the tank from and even though it happened years before I’d even move to SD it’s always an interesting story to tell family and friends when they visit for the first time about this what happened at that armory and that’s the one and these streets are the place he went rampaging through. They also always ask if the tank on display in the front is the same one he stole and I have to always disappoint.
I always wondered if it was that tank outside. I guess not 😢 😂
@@holypotato4287 I think it would be much cooler if it was, but I understand why they wouldn’t make it the same one out on display.
Great to see my hometown get some love, funny enough I’m a former Army dude moving from San Diego to Utah.
This happened a year before I was born, strange to see footage of a tank rampage on the same freeways I used to commute to work every day.
San Diego definitely hasn’t forgotten this one.
Also, tool theft is very common in San Diego. A lot of local hispanics resort to tool and vehicle theft, then will go straight to Tijuana to sell them at profit. I grew up watching my father’s work van get broken into repeatedly as an HVAC guy.
You should steal one of Utah's tanks.
@@f.wallace8969 they could send the mormons on bicycles after me though, then I’m screwed
There are a lot of local Hispanics in San Diego. It’s not surprising that theft would be common there.
@@chriswebster24 "but but socio economic reasons!"
I love these types of videos, keep up the great work!
You're a great editor. Love these micro-docs!
The decline of this guys life, is really the type of stuff that teaches you to be humble when your life is going well and smooth.
Yeah simmilair story to Killdozer
I'm from San Diego and I remember my dad telling me about this you definitely told it better but it's pretty cool to here about the background of the guy not just the story of the tank
I love this channel so much. Perfect vids to listen to during shower time
Your videos are INSANE. Thanks. You are exciting to listen to. Your mastery of soundtrack is also insane. Good job.
I love your retelling of this incredible dramatic story. I remember being on the 405 S being glued to a news station not believing my ears. Great job.👍
These mini-docs are fantastic! The choice of music for this one inspired.
Popo, keep it up. This ol' Police Officer/Firefighter/Paramedic
(retired 1993) enjoys the trip down memory lane very much.
Keep it code 4 buddy.
Great mini documentaries. The info and commentary is great.
I can’t help but smile through the entirety of your videos…fucking history man
That man in his final moments had peace he longed for. A sense of freedom from the shackles of the harsh world he lived in. Despite how tragic it was, he definitely felt relief when he came to the end of the road.
Yeah. Just a man down on his luck . Not to to say what he did was good.
The music plus the stock footage you used to portray his life and the footage of the rampage really well portrays the insanity of him at the time
I just love how u did the psychology background of this guy, almost makes u feel sorry for em
Man, I can’t imagine what loosing my dad and mom will be like. They had us boys (4) at a later age, my dad is 73 now, it scares me to live when my father no longer does. Sometimes I can’t even imagine life without my mother. I’m 27 and don’t depend on them, but still, I’m jealous of people who grow up to be 50 and still have their parents.
It'll be okay.
You just keep your head up and in the game. You will do just fine bro!
What shocks me is how the civilians are all like “Why would you shoot the guy it the 57 ton killing machine instead of arresting him?”
It was in California
Never underestimate someone with nothing left to lose
Wonderful material, man. Pleased to come across your channel.
After this incident the tank was returned to the armory funnily enough. I was born in that same exact hospital as this guy a few years after the tank rampage and lived right off the Genessee exit with my mom and grandma when I was a kid. San Diego Mesa College is right next to the National Guard armory and is where my parents met and I remember when I was younger they were showing me the their old college and pointed out the tank as they drove past and told me about how some guy stole it and took it on a rampage. My dad had worked at Pizza Hut at the time and recalled wondering why the systems wait times were so long until one of the customers mentioned a stolen tank and he was confused until he got home after his shift and watched the news. It’s pretty cool seeing you cover a story in an area I grew up and have so many memories in, love your videos man.
I have heard this story many times but I love the way you narrate things - my favorite saying now is “disconnect them from the world”
You're about to BLOW up on here. You've already had a meteoric rise...but these vids you've been putting out the last 6 months+ have been top notch.
Love these videos. Keep them up!
The more I learn about these crazy things, the more I sympathize with the men involved. What's a man to do when society takes everything away and nobody reaches their hand out for help?
Not this probably lol
"what's a man to do when society takes everything away"
This guy screwed himself by not having better control of his emotions.
Society didn’t take anything away from him. His mom died that’s a part of life and then cause he was a man child that couldn’t control his emotions his wife left him. Then the dipshit tried suing a hospital for $1,600,000 cause they wouldn’t let him walk out with spinal injuries from a motorcycle he chose to get on and ride. Then he got mad when the hospital countered for $6,000 when he had no problem trying to take $1,600,000 from them.
Society is the enemy of civilization.
@@airsoftdude36 see. His DAD died. But even if ppl hear his story they still not remember.
We still in mideval times.
Society is BRAINWASHED
Amazing editing and music in the background of all these mini documentaries. Not too long but yet still has all information you need to understand what has happened and adding small details that you wouldn't hear from other sources. Amazing work, always looking forward to another video!
The music was terrible, wtf are you talking about?
Great video! I absolutely love the 1986 Miami shootout story. I cant wait to see your doc about it. !!!
Tanks for the memories.
Dude, your videos are awesome and very well put together, thank you for taking the time to make these and to share them with us, love the 80s sound track by the way!
