My career in Broadcasting began in 1967. But, Gayle and I have been friends since our early days together in St Louis with our mutual friend the late-Don Pietromonaco a legendary Radio Personality (Johnny Rabbitt). Gayle was with the Klassmen at that time, and was one of the most powerful female vocalists you could EVER imagine. Later, when she joined Smith I was proud and privileged to play her records on the various radio stations that I was with as Music Director & Air Personality.
mighty1090kaay You had the privilege and pleasure to be friends with this Angel of a Lady. You were so BLESSED. Was she as sweet adorable and kind as I will forever imagine her to be? I truly hope so. Do you have any amusing anecdotes that you can share about this lovely lady, Gayle McCormick? I'm sure many besides me would just love to hear them.
A fond memory from my vinyl vault, for sure. I used to listen to this all the time. Now it seems tame after going back and listening to her in A Group Called Smith, though. They were highly funky and another big favorite of mine from those days. Give-or-take 1969.
Sadly Gayle passed away from cancer on March 1, 2016 after years of being a semi recluse. Only three fans, I being one of them, and family attended her funeral. She was sadly misused by Dunhill records. She was one of the greatest blue eyed soul singers and her career was just mishandled. This song is a great performance with a trite production. The record company was right that she was the shining star of Smith (just listen to their first couple of albums, why are the guys singing???) but they just wasted her talent and "Sayonara!"
She had a great big voice with tremendous range, amplitude who, was stunningly beautiful ! Dunhill and Mainstream Pop, Grossly underestimated her Talent and did very little to Promote and Market same ! ...It was a " Crying Shame "...pun intended !!...very sad indeed. What a beautiful girl ! db
Great voice, but Bonnie Bramlett who wrote it has done the greatest version, which is her 2002 version of it on here "I'm Still The Same" album. Awesome version!!!
R.I.P Ms. Gayle McCormick

mighty1090kaay Do you know if her sisters or brothers are still alive and if they have stories to share. I'd love to meet them as well.
I love Gayle Mccormick, one of the best female singers. She will be missed. This version of Superstar is my favorite.

Spike Spilker Actually the correct name of the group was Smith( not a Group called Smith like many mistakenly thought including yours truly.)
Great Post! Thank you for sharing.

All these years I had no idea Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell wrote this song until I read a comment on this video.

Don't forget, Leon Russell co-wrote
Someone altered the mix to make it a karaoke tracj.
