Our CRAZIEST idea EVER

- Опубліковано 6 жов 2024
- This week we are in a dire situation with no working gearbox we have to find a way to cover the 90NM to Pangkor where we will be hauled out of the water and our repairs will start. After some negotiations we manage to strike a deal and get a boat sent up to tow us back to the yard. The only drama is they are not allowed to come into the port which means we have to find a way to move our sailing vessel 16NM to the pick up zone. Boy do we come us with a crazy idea… so crazy it might just work!

I have not seen you for a few years. The guy’s attitude to the girl have improved a lot. Relation in development.
Delos had that same issue with their brand new transmission before they crossed the pacific. Might want to reach out to them or watch that episode to see how Brian removed the gear box.
"Where there's a will, there's a way." If you ever have an issue like this again, you can often do just as well by having the dinghy lashed on one side or the other. That way you keep the rudder clear and don't risk pushing the stern in an unwanted direction. Glad you could keep smiling through it all. That's the most important part.
Genius! So happy you two have started a new adventure. It is so refreshing to see two people with❤ love for each other in their hearts.
Kieran, not stupidly crazy, Freaking brilliant!! You do what you gotta do and you two are doing it very well with what you have. Beautiful boat to start with and believe you two have the skills to make her home. I know it is easy to say but just keep your chins up and eye's on the prize🤗
Consider buying headsets to communicate between each other. They are a lot easier than hand signals or shouting.... especially on your neighbors 😅
One knot at a time! You have done very well knocking down every thiing that has be thrown in your way like it was a piece of cake!!
So good to have you guys back still crazy as ever ,with that never give up Aussie will. Keep it up!
Thanks you too, been watching you two for a long time❤
Pushing was a very logical solution ... let the larger craft break the waves... and the dinghy pushes in more quiet water...
Wow. I can’t tell if you have terrible luck or great luck. No matter what wild problems come you way, you pull another miracle out if your sleeve.
Cheers mate! We don’t know the answer to that, but are very grateful to have made it to our marina.
That little engine should get a gold medal.
Indeed!! Haha
What fun you guys are having!
I've pushed my 40' sailboat with swim fins to get into an anchorage when the engine died.
It wasn't far though but once the boat is moving it doesn't take much to keep it moving.
You can tie the dinghy alongside and once the boat is making way the rudder will have steering. You may go 3/4 of a circle before having steerage but it does work. It helps if you use the dingy motor turned to counteract the offset. Meaning turn the outboard to turn right if it is alongside the starboard side or left if on the port side. That will help get the boat moving forward without as much going around in a partial circle. It's one of those things that those of us without working engines had to learn.
i would have rigged a forestay from the mizzen mast to the bow to rig a jib on for emergency use. A smaller jib hanked on upside down should work... Unless all you have is roller furlers, in which case that won't work. Glad you arranged for the tow so you can get to work on the new project.
Always love you videos!
What fun at 😢other people’s safety and expense, go for it but wh3n the proverbial hits the fan, call for help. Ridiculous!
How to cause the most mutterings under the breath and shaking of heads. Way sketchy adventure! A danger to yourselves and your boat but also a good chance of becoming an inconvenience if not a danger to others. At the very least you should have tried to get some kind of jury rigged "sailing" capability sorted. I note the mizzen mast is at least upright. I spat out my tea when the guy said he wasn't even sure how much anchor chain was on board, didn't even know if it was tied off at the bitter end- might not even know what a bitter end is! I was a delivery skipper for 30 years. I survived because of this advice: "The sea is not blind, it actually has a homicidal intent to kill or maim you. It is waiting to catch you out even if you are well prepared and in great shape." I am delighted for you guys getting that fabulous boat and at the start of a wonderful adventure but I think you need a couple of adjustments in the thinking department.
Well done folks. And u managed to fly the drone as well!! Real UA-camrs. 👍
I have that same outboard. It is a champ.
Great idea well done
Great job! You did it.
Thank you!
Well done
Brilliant 😊
Necessity is the mother of all invention, great lateral thinking. Well done.
I know people who have. Used a dinghy for years to move their boat. The trick is to raft up tight to the boat about midship. This gives you Lots of control
With the dinghy strapped alongside you can climb in an out of the dinghy and even help with directional control
H
Hi Harold, thank you for your comment. We tried this in the beginning. But it did not work at all unfortunately. This was the only way we could move forward.
You’re becoming stronger every day!
Epic! You guys should be an advertisement for Yamaha!
Haha if only!
I love it,that took a lot of nerve but you successfully made it!!This week was a lot better then last week, sorry last week didn’t go so well till you got a tow in.anxious to see if your windlass pulls up the anchor next week 😍
What a great lesson on innovation and seamanship! Also great good fortune with the weather!
Mates the God's were with you...without video evidence now one would ever belief you that this is even possible... amazing ingenuity, and some serious balls...well done and looking forward to all your upcoming video's....
Ps you should enable the $ feature on your channel where non-patreons can also contribute some $'s towards all that lies ahead...
Just as with Isabelle, I never had any doubt you could do it😂! Refreshing to see some happiness on your face again. Love Doc
Merewether is really making you work for her.... BUT... she is only making sure that you deserve her... you two are amazing.... thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers mate! Fingers crossed
I am keen to see footage of your engine radiator.
You were blessed to have a beautiful seascape for your dingy adventure! I smiled throughout the entire video.
Great to see the smile back on your faces!
(it has been a long time since Marewether-1)
And a big shout out to Yamaha outboard!!!
It will be an excellent vessel after you apply your love and care…. Safe travels
So Cool
Hope Yamaha send you a new outboard for the wonderful advertisement😊
Don't underestimate the power of a small vessel with an outboard engine! A long time ago we pulled a stuck inland waterway vessel (85 meter long, +1000T) from a shallow with a 4 m vlet with a 20hp outboard engine. It took some patience, but after 30 minutes of steady pulling it came loose. The skipper of the vessel called us crazy when we started... but he was smiling from ear to ear when his ship came loose.
Good on ya mate .. Great job. I remember Delos had gearbox problems ..there ended up fully replacing it as from memory the repair they did, didn't work.
Cheers! Yes, saw that too. We’re working on that issue now in our marina at Pangkor. All the best to you
Genius.... Lol😂 I Love it!!! You 2 are amazing!!! Y'all can do anything together!!!!
So happy y’all are back,,,,,,,perseverance will always pay dividends,,,bravo🤙🤙
Thank you!! Cheers, happy to be back:)
Hey, World According to Garp! All good :)
So the big question is how much did the tow the rest of the way cost and how much more would you have saved by going all the way on the outboard?
Almost sure that gearbox clutch burned up due to low gearbox oil. I think its a wet clutch so if you are stuck you can sometimes ad very sticky oil to keep those clutches engage a bit longer
Well done! In South Africa we have an Afrikaans saying "'n (a) Boer maak 'n plan". It means a farmer always finds a way of doing something to fix a problem. Seems like Aussies are the same. Great work.
Omg, kiss that sweet engine! This vlog alone I hope will be able to you get you another in the future. Sailors who push win! Again Congrats 🎉 in your engagement. So excited!
My buddy had to do it to his 45’ Morgan. Instead of pushing he pulled.
Nice work, great to see you back to normal.
Happy for you guys.
Groovy episode. Stay strong.
I can't believe that worked so well, definitely one to remember.
Great job getting to the pickup point. I hope you watched the SV Delos episode when they replaced the transmission ( twice ). The engine has to be moved out of the way to remove the transmission. Best of luck.
You were dare enough to do and success
I was told it was possible. I own a Super Maramu and faced the same issue with the gear box.
Great achievement 👏👏👏
Alain
Well done guys! Good luck for the next stage!
Well done !! One step closer
Fair winds⛵️
Great effort guys, where there is an Aussie will there is a way🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼🇦🇺🇦🇺
Yeww!!
You guys are UNBELIEVABLE 🙌 Way to go! Cheering for you all the way 😅
Cheers guys!! Hah appreciate it, we need it. All the best:)
You are marine soldiers of the 2023 academy! Rock on and fulfill your dreams!
❤ from 🇨🇦
This is one of the best.
You are simply an inspiration as sailors and as a couple.
Waiting for you to arrive in Israel.
Thank you for your kind words my friend!
Wow, well done. The Amel manual says the transmission can only be serviced upon haulout. Not much info other than that. Im sure you'll get it sorted out once you've hauled her along with the other little projects you have. Note sarcasm lol. Im so happy Neptune smiled on you on your trip out to the island. Quite an accomplishment going 16 nm,s under those conditions. Look forward to the next episode.
Wow ! What a story. Stay safe.
Great video guys and pushing with the dinghy a skill worth knowing I had to do it on my celestial 49 once, when you hip tie the dinghy on the Amel try attaching it further forward so that the prop is pushing straight aft they curve in astern and so the thrust is not straight. Cheers
It’s the curve that becomes the most memorable
You could buy the Seafoam engine oil additive needed to improve the engine where you are. You put it in and fast idle the engine for 30 min about 1200 RPM. Then change the engine oil. Improve compression markedly.
Better give that Yamaha a fresh plug and oil as a thank you!
Excellent video, and also surprised with the idea you got, jeje
Well done!
Just in ✅ all the boxes, did you go under the boat and check to see if the prop was turning when put in gear, or even if the prop is still there?
A bad idea is only an idea that fails then it becomes a learning experience.
Progress maybe slow but wonderful news. Success favours the brave, well done😊. Maybe you could consider getting a long-shaft outboard fitted to the yacht as an axillary motor, just a thought. ❤ neil
I can't believe that you flew a drone during this
Great episode. Keep at it! Another 19,000 little problems solved and you will have a “like new” boat
Haha that’s the plan! Cheers mate
You guys did an awesome job.!!We also had a similar experience towing our 56 foot sailboat with our dinghy, we envy your youth.. Sail on sailors. Autie and Janie McVicker S/V Onward, lying Grenada
Hi guys, you can buy a bracket which is a motor bracket that actually does pull up out of the water and when you need it, you can pull it down and there’s like an outboard on your yacht. Keep up the good work. Love and appreciate your videos Cliff from Logan City Queensland Australia 🇦🇺 from the big island 🧑🏾🦽🐨🦘🏝️🇦🇺🌏
I once had to bring a Bavaria 44 back south from the Caledonian Canal through (very) tidal waters without a prop. I did it with a Honda 5hp bolted to the bathing ladder on the transom. In flat water, with no headwind, we got up to 4-5kn, but struggled to get over 2kn when the wind picked up.
We have also brought other 44' charter boats back to base using their tender with a 2.5hp strapped alongside - slow but we got there!
I think you are, in your bad luck, very lucky. You have excellent weather you have found a towing service and your outboard has done a great job. As has your dingy which you inflated for the first time…. Keep up the good work I guess the next video will be you arriving at your destination
That looks mad af your a bloody genius m8! ✊🏻🏴
You need to give Brian a call with S.V Delos he would rebuild that gear box in his sleep
This has to be the best channel for me right now. With slight differences you've embarked on what I'm theorising in my mind, I'm buy in around the 40 foot mark, I'm buying gold bullion to hold before I make the right buy, hopefully a few months from now. So watching all these dramas is what I need. It honestly looks totally exciting and risky and dramatic and yeah it's nice to watch. 🌅
Thank you so much mate! Appreciate your comment. All the best to you
This is what I want to see. Using initiative and lateral thinking. Well done guys. You are going to make it! I like your Tattoo, "Dream on" (Par Sapana in Hindi). You are pursuing a dream. I look forward to you getting Merryweather (ll) back to life.
as curious as this question might be - was there an impediment to rigging up some temporary forestay on the mizzen and using that sail to move along?
Great advert for Yamaha!
Unsure about the anchor chain? OMFG, how difficult is it to check that the bitter end of the chain is either attached to something solid, or attached to a decent length of nylon rode that should be tied off to something solid.
Hi Peter, thank you for your comment. We could not, as the 200kg mast was laying on top of the anchor locker. So this was simply the only way.
Good video
Hi guys.
You are certainly not bored, I see that the tension is always very high and that you are also having fun ......😂😂😂😂
Just one consideration; you told us that the boat had an accident with a ship and summarily what damage it had.
Could you give us a more detailed description of the accident and the visible and non-visible damage?....🤕😷🥶
Maybe make a video of even 30/40 minutes, 16 minutes is too short.....😏😜👌👌
A big hug to you 🤗🤗
Your going to need to name your dingy “Turbo the Tug” or something to commemorate the moment.
"Never Give UP, Never give up, NEVER GIVE UP." Jimmy Valvano
That was one of the freakiest things I have ever seen anyone do, except maybe Nandji after they got off that reef they got stuck on. They, too, brought their boat back under "dinghy power" although, from memory, I think they strapped the dinghy to Nandji's side.
Is that an outboard mounted on your port haft quarter? Is it usable?
I seen good bad and ugly do the same thing on their channel and wind hippie do it on hers I think they both tied the dinghy on the side of the boat but they both had smaller boats and yours so maybe you just had to do it from the back but anyway you made it and that's what counts
Is the remote shifter shifting all the way in to gear , or is the adjustment off?Go to the gear box and see if yo can move the shifter in to gear.
Yay
Wow wow wow...
The only way to get to the finish line is to keep moving forward.
Ahhh no anchor light...😂😂 why can't you rig a headsail from missen mast. Just set sail farther fwd. Might be slow buttttt it'll work
This makes a great story that will gain you and boat some fame/notoriety?
did you consider trying to use the mizzen?
Does the Tohatsu on the rail not work?
Unfortunately it did not idol properly. So we had to go with the 6hp. Cheers for the comment
Is it safe to use the mizzen?
No as the standing rigging, was no longer, well standing. We did not want to use it and put pressure on it, it could fall too.
It’s like watching a car crash.
❤❤🥰🥰
